      Unanimity among the jury is not required under NY law and Trumps lawyers even admitted to such during trial. You should really push back on claims of political prosecution since such claims are of high consequence in US society.

      How is a Republic different from a democracy?

    • @ExecutiveSummary-k8b
      @ExecutiveSummary-k8b 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      @michaelwood3146 A REPUBLIC is a REPRESENTED democracy, NOT a full democracy. FULL DEMOCRACIES are where the people would vote in lieu of a legislature. REPUBLICS have (in our case) Representatives and Senators that vote on the day-to-day items on our behalf.

    • @mlangbert
      @mlangbert 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @@michaelwood3146 Madison made this distinction in The Federalist Number 14. He wrote: "In a democracy, the people meet and exercise the government in person; in a republic, they assemble and administer it by their representatives and agents. A democracy, consequently, will be confined to a small spot. A republic may be extended over a large region." The Roman republic was a republic because it balanced different assemblies and councils and restricted the powers of the elected magistrates. The Plebeian Council balanced the powers of the aristocratic magistrates, for instance. The founders read Montesquieu as well as Aristotle (who had no respect for democracy) and emphasized the importance of checks and balances. The House was directly elected, but the Senate was not until the 17th Amendment was passed in 1913.

    We, meaning we citizens, need to remember that the Constitution is designed to INTENTIONALLY make it hard to pass laws and get things done. This is to force politicians to the "center" so that by default, the majority opinion takes precedent, by forcing compromise. Sadly, politicians have figured out how to game the system, and have changed to rules such that politicians can now hurt the citizens more easily.

    • @ShadowlessFist

      Excellent point. Polarised political parties that are determined to thwart each other for no reason other than spite are not fit for purpose. Not being able to admit an Idea is a good one, just because your opponent had it, is nonsensical when BOTH parties are ostensibly meant to be working for the benefit of their country is ludicrous. Compromise seems less possible than ever because all they want to do is Dunk on each other rather than get things done.

      Also, corruption mostly is the result of lobbying and Ramaswamy would do nothing about that.
      And all the Banon-like whining about the "deep state" would accomplish - if put into policy - would be to reduce the geo-political position of the US in a world in need of it more than ever since the end of the cold war.
      It isn't the "deep state" that got us into Iraq and Afghanistan, it was the people we actually elected. Remember Bush was overwhelmingly re-elected in 2005 after the awful debacle in Iraq.

    Vivek would bring the intellect to a Trump administration. Now it’s characterised by excellent depth of experience to navigate the rebuilding of the nation but Vivek would provide the ability to articulate their argument. That’s a void at the moment. Tulsi Gabbard would provide international diplomacy and a certain moral code that’s not being expressed. The “Republicans” (or independents as they probably are more accurately described) have an incredibly rich lineup of talent that could last for decades

      Not Republicans at all. All these people are liberal centrists that rejected the woke nonsense and unfortunately the Republicans are benefactors of this at the moment. Why unfortunately? Because they're fundamentally inflexible and this 'love affair' will end after Trump because none of these people are conservative enough to support what republicans traditionally suck at which is an entirely intolerant society towards everyone but a clone of them.

    Totally right, Tom. I used to be a teacher, low SES, urban. 6 years at a charter school and 3 at a city school with high ESL. I also taught a 300-level college course of how to assess and diagnose reading disabilities and one of the sections was about the gross discrepancy of words spoken in a home via high SES and low SES (and this was like 2010-2013 and I don't even recall what the salary cut off was but it also had to do with one parent vs two parents in the home and number of jobs worked as well). I would wonder if some of that has changed since so many parents are on devices now and not talking to their kids.
    Also need to point out we aren't a democracy, we're a Constitutional Republic that utilizes the democratic process. Ask someone what policy they disagree with not which personality they prefer--that's what voting should be about unfortunately we've dumbed people down so much they don't even know the 3 branches of government or what function they serve even at a basic level. Just give them streaming, food delivery, and shopping and don't pay attention to the man behind the curtain....
