  • Thanks for watching Jack's "CLASSIC SERIES"
This was the last year that the Cartier Alcos/MLW pulled their weight for the railroad, and a fine job they are doing with plenty of hard working noise...
Hope you enjoyed the sights and sounds of these 4 axle RS18's hard at work as we chase a northbound empty log train. These trains ran 5 days a week at the time this was filmed in September 2001. The dirt road you see in the video was the only road back into the wilderness, and took us hours and burned a tank of gas in and out since the road was so rough in spots. The Explorer never got out of 2nd gear, and the 4x4 was kicked in most of the time. We cheered, when we could get up to 35 mph, and the dust was flying.
We chased this train back to mile 51.6. But was as far back as 81 on this trip were we camped near FOX siding. Cartier's sidings are alphabetically named starting with ABLE at the south end. We were near BAKER, CHARLES and DOG filming this video. Its so remote up there, that the Cartier uses helicopters if they need to get crews out. But the scenery just can't be beat.
This was filmed with a Sony Digital 8 camera.

Those engines sounded great threading thru the mountains. Thank you for capturing this so long ago and sharing it with us now!
    Another great real time capsule

Glad you enjoyed it EdS, and they do sound fantastic in the mountains. We camped 80 miles back in the wilderness. What a fantastic sound. We listen to a northbound laying in our sleeping bags for over an hour before it faded away in the night. Unreal. Will never forget it. Thanks for watching.

I don't care what anyone says, Alco's were and still are the prettiest and best sounding locos ever on North American tracks.

I don’t know about pretty, but surely cool sounding locos.

The only thing I didn't like about the Alco's. Most of them are gone. Loved the looks, and their sound. Thank for watching.
