  • This video goes into more detail about my Car Card & Waybill System. Car forwarding systems are a great way to add operational interest into a model railroad and give it a sense of realism and prototypical purpose.

I really enjoyed this video! I've never done waybills before but they look like they make layouts more fun. I'm going to add this system to mine.

Thank you Vinny! It is a really cool system. It is pretty flexible too and doesn't require loads of paperwork. Simple and easy...and I am so good with that!

I like it! Thanks for sharing this. I will have to implement something like this on my layout.....once I get to that stage.

Thank you John...I will! BTW, I'm reminded that I need to work on a video to introduce a car or two into the community weathering project. Been wanting to brush up (pun intended) on my weathering skills!

    John,
Thats cool. Only the third time I've seen these used. The first was on David Popp's Hew Haven RR that I have on DVD. They actually have these on the DVD so you can print them. I'm going to use the same system on my RR once I expand it. Right now, I have the pockets, but I'm not using the waybills yet.

Pretty much any operating layout uses Car Card and Waybills. Go look up OpSig.Org and maybe meet up with some other operators., Great fun.

Ray, It is a pretty cool system and is really flexible. Once the car has completed a waybill cycle, I can move as empty to it's assigned staging yard and move it to the storage drawer. Later, the car can be pulled and a new waybill can be inserted. In this way, the same car doesn't necessarily have to make the same 4 moves. Also, you can use special Empty Car Request cards to add even more interest in adding variety to the pace.

Haven't gotten to the point of being able to do the 4 cycle yet, but I do have loco and car pockets for my stuff. Maybe I'll do a explanation Volg on this also.

Yep very familiar. Still looking for an easy pouch or something similar, so the cards dont fall on the floor when sorting before and after switching, the main drawback of a stack of cards for a train. Fun tho. Robert

Robert- I use a waist apron like you find at ACE or other home improvement stores. My particular one is from the Ops Sig group that I am a member of. It has three front pouch/pockets perfect for the car cards, uncoupler picks, two way radios, and it even will fit a small clipboard!

I really enjoyed your teaching...Are there any books u prescribe I read to understand all operations terminology and reasons why track is listed a certain way, buildings placed in certain locations etc.

Jeff: Check out the book: A Compendium Of Model Railroad Operations, from design to implementation. This book gives many examples of what you're asking

The bins are from Wal-mart. I just spray glued in some foam matting like what is used in tool boxes.
