  • The world needs different types of weavers, it's true. We need weavers that weave different things, and work with different materials, and go through the process in their own unique way.
So in today's episode, I'm celebrating our differences! I've offered up 3 weaving categories, and I'm encouraging you to give it a little thought. I hope you'll share your results and help me cheer on all of us, no matter what kind of weaver you are.
The April Weave Along is here! Join us for this month-long weaving adventure where we all start and finish a project in the month of April, and we all utilize the same pattern. This time around, we're leaning into undulating twill! To see all the program details and find out how you can participate, jog over to the April Weave Along Central page - actoncreative.net/april-2024-....

To be honest I don't know what kind of weaver I am. I love color, I love texture, I love fashion, I'm still learning And Chris is what gets me back to the loom. because I still feel a little lost. I also love fabric

I'd say that currently I'm a Process driven, Mid-planner who likes challenges. Patterns with large number shafts interest me, but not so much the colourway or graphic design. So far, I've made home furnishings and a few clothing items. So long as I'm Throwing a Shuttle and learning something new, I'm happy.

I’m more of a paint by numbers kind of weaver. I bought the AWL instructions and now I’m waiting for a second 7.5 rigid heddle to come in. I’m trying to learn something new all the time in the hopes I can create more synapses so my brain doesn’t turn to mush when I’m old but coming up with my own designs isn’t my strength. I’m more of a parrot repeating things back. lol. I see pretty and I want to replicate. Maybe with more experience the student will become the teacher but honestly there’s not a high chance of that happening any time soon. That’s why we love you Chris. Thanks for all the teaching

I am a Dabbler who is a mid level planer and loves to make THINGS. My first year I made scarves. My second year I made Tea Towles. This year I seam to be into Blankets and Place Matts. My original goal was to make fabric, and I still want to, I just haven't gotten there YET. I plan out what I'm going to do, I add an extra yard to my warp. I start my project, then tweak this or that, and maybe the next thing. When I'm satisfied I weave a bumper and take off on my project. If there is any extra warp at the end I'll try a few more variations. I want to try it all.

This is the best video- it gives us all freedom to feel good about what and how we like to approach a loom. I love color, mid level planning ( because I am often a bit off) and I love to weave things I can give away and things I can use about the house. I am a long time seamstress, and have sewn a lot of handwoven articles, but that is not my true love! Color, texture, and fun!!! that is more my style. And yes, I get stuck now and then.... thanks to Chris for always inspiring me! I watch your videos every morning to get started. Thank you Chris.

New weaver, but from a general perspective - I'm a highly planning oriented crafter, with a strong focus on colour and adapting designs. My focus is learning all the things and trying out new techniques. I'm also big on tackling stretch projects and then finding ways to solve problems and customize things so they work for my needs. Right now, I'm focused on weaving finished objects (rather than cloth for sewing - I have tons of commercial cloth to sew. I'll probably get there in a few years, when I can weave very fine yarns). So far, I've done tea towels, and plan to keep doing them for awhile - as long as I have people to give them away to, lol. Might try rugs after this.

I love weave-a-longs because, as a weaver who began later in life, I rely on others to bring ideas to me and design/do the math. I think I will always feel like a beginner. However, I LOVE color and pick my own colors rather than use kits. The Acton Creative channel and weave-a-longs are perfect for me.

I am a detailed planner, and for me design, structure and color are all critical. I love playing with them all together while planning a project. Once at the loom, I like to produce specific things- scarves, towels, placemats, blankets, etc. - but also usually play, sample, and mess around a bit to get ideas for other projects.

I am a dip in and out weaver. This is due to the fact I am an eclectic creator. Perhaps I could be described as a mood creator due to the fact I sometimes create based on what I am in the mood for. This could be weaving, spinning, knitting, crochet, painting etc, though this can sometimes be driving by the desire to create a specific item. This can result in choice paralysis :( I can spend all day wanting to be creative and not be able to choose what it is I want to do. For example, just the other day I wanted to weave, first choice I had to make was which loom, was it my 32 or 16" loom I wanted to warp up, part of that was dependent on the item I wanted to make, though I finally chose to warp up my 16", as I thought I could weave something twice then see what it looked like sewn together (I ruled out double weave as I did not want to do plain weave). The next choice was, what fibre and colour and pattern I wanted/had. Needless to say I ran out of time and ended up not doing anything other than dividing my reed for my 16" loom by marking every 10 slots with a coloured tie to make it easier when deciding how many warp strings I need, what colour and where to start warping etc. Don't get me wrong, there are days when I can make a choice easily and just get on with it, but the other day was not one of those days lol T x

  • @polymerart
    @polymerart 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

In general I am a process driven creator in all of my artwork. For me it is all about finding out what I can do rather than the end product. I am a new enough weaver that I do need to have the math component (mostly so I know I have enough yarn) but I don't enjoy the math. So I have a couple weaving calculators bookmarked on my phone so I can just plug in numbers and it can do the math part. Color drives me, but texture and drape are also vital. I have an intention to eventially weave fine fabric for lightweight clothing. Not structured items, but ones that gather and flow.
I would call myself an experiential weaver who has some goals for the future.

I’m an explorer. Most of my work is driven by asking what will happen if I do such & such. I’m a mid level planner - I like to work out the math of sett, width (wide) and length. I use color pencils on graph paper & love the piles of cones & using many shades of the same color. I weave yardage to turn into wearables. Home goods too.

Love color, but also the hand--how does the fabric feel, drape, etc--with mid-level planning (not big on the math aspect, but do some of that, especially if weaving plaids--then math is a must!). I usually have a particular outcome for the fabric in mind-a particular project, like a scarf, shawl, throw, tableware. It's all good!😄

@@bettieshea278 It's a restricted count and restricted for wear. Which means only the British Royal family can wear it. You can ask the registry, but they will probably not release the numbers. You can come up with something similar to it on your own though. It won't be registered, nor a true Tartan, unless you pay to register it. www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tartanDetails?ref=182 you can email the registry and ask if you are allowed the numbers to weave it for personal use, but you'll never be allowed to use the fabric

I need several looms I think to really satisfy my curiosity. Love color work. Probably not a fan of textures as much as some. Patterns are fun but inevitably I’ll skip a row and it will bug me for the rest of the way…. On the fly, plain weave, and a lot of color is my go to nature. Oh and I have a four shaft table loom.

I just started learning how to weave. I also started to learn how to sew. I want to make my own clothing, including weaving the fabric itself.
So I am attracted to both patterns and color, being that I want to play with them in my personal wardrobe. And I like a rough outline of a plan, again because it permits me to ensure I can use the pieces I weave in my wardrobe.
I am definitely a process person. I want to understand how and why it works the way it does. To me, this part is driven by emotion and desire.
And yet, I find I am also attracted to the sensation of weaving. I want to be able to start and finish projects, so I can experience the sensation of it, and make judgement calls about that sensation. It provides some structure, and allows me to maximize my ability as a weaver and as a tailor.
I'll need to if I'm going to make my own clothing!!!
