As I live in Houston, Texas; I happen to be blessed with an amazingly long growing season that starts as early as March and ends as late as October. Can’t wait for the first official season of growing for me!
I’m super pumped about starting my seeds indoors QUESTION: what distance should the grow lights be from the seed trays?? Thanks for the info in the video... really gonna help me build my massive ultimate veggie garden this year. Cheers, Chad
Hey great question! Before germination, it really doesn't matter. Once the seeds pop up, then its going to depend on your light. Some high-powered lights can be 2 feet away and have the same effect as a lower-powered bulb 2 inches away. Refer to the manufacturer's specs and err on the side of slightly further away.
The Ripe Tomato Farms ok thnx, if I see the seedlings getting leggy, I’ll bring the light closer, but I’ll be sure to read the manual for the lights. Chad.
These movies are so interesting and funny that even when I watch something I know, I watch them with curiosity as if I had heard this information for the first time
I have to say that you are amazing to learn from. I am starting my own seeds this year (first time) because of the lack of plants that I was able to get this spring with the lockdowns. I have purchased my 4 foot lights and converted them to LED and have turned my one room into a grow room. This has given me something to look over and do as I plan my starter plants so they are ready the first week of May here in Ontario. Thankyou so much.
That's so awesome Kevin, you are more than on your way. You'll learn by doing, and every season, every crop, you become more and more of an expert at the things that you have repeat successes on. Its all building blocks and you'll be amazed at the knowledge you acquire and the speed you do!
Right on Michael! You got this man. I'll have 2 or 3 more Seed Starting videos in the next two weeks... Just more tips and stuff beyond the basics in this one. Hope they can help! I'm not worried though... Once a gardener, always a gardener!
I have been planning on building a garden bed outside for the entire winter now and have recently invested in a grow light, 2 10”x20” heating mats, and 40 cell 1 sq inch grow trays. It’s really fun to experiment with how everything grows before the actual grow season begins and to watch them everyday waking up from their dormant state and prospering. If anyone who is not sure where to start indoor or outdoor in gardening, don’t overthink it! I too was confused by all the complex terms such as “PAR” and “LUX” that only the professionals should worry about. In most amateur growing set ups that are small, most lights are sufficient and should provide what your plants need. Go forth and conquer and hope this helped 🤞🏼🪴
Exactly Daniel. All that technical stuff is fantastic for hydro systems and growing indoors year round. To just start some tomato seeds early indoor, a couple of LED lights and a heat mat is MORE than enough to get going! :-)
Thanks so much Jeff, I’m following step by step this year so please continued making videos on when and what’s next to plant etc... You’re the BEST Mentor Ever, Thank God for you, honesty I was hopeless several months asking your help and now, I’m doing better. QUICK Question: what’s a good source seeds company here in Canada 🇨🇦..??? Plz. Thanks 🙏 truly 🇨🇦
Hey Seddy, thanks!!! If its small amounts, just grab some West Coast Seeds packets from your local retailer. If you need larger amounts, there's online seed houses like Stokes, Veseys, Johnny's, seed-bank.ca, and more
Thank you so much! The holistic agricultural revolution is imminent ! All your videos will go to trending, and possibly be on the mainstream media in the near future in my opinion ;)
I've been marking on my calendar when to plant my seeds indoors. Also, experimenting with cold stratification for some flowers seeds. I'm also looking at buying a folding lunch room type of table to make expansion easier. Last year, the 2nd year of my indoor gardening, I really ran out of room when I transplanted to bigger pots.
That happens to me all the time Lar! I fill up half my space with seedling trays...then when they have to go to larger pots and take 4x the space, I am literally out of room a week later! LOL
Even if I had the space to start seeds indoors, January would be too soon. For where I live, April might be a better time. The weather doesn't really warm up until June. Many years ago, when I was still living at home with my parents in Ohio, I had a magazine subscription and right now, I don't recall which one, maybe Mother Earth or Organic Gardening; but, there was a packet of tomato seeds stapled in the center. My parents house did have windows with window ledges. I started some of the seeds in a couple of pots on the window ledge about the kitchen sink. It was the window with the best light. The seeds sprouted and by the time the weather was decent enough so that the seedlings could be planted outside, I had 3 or 4 little tomato plants. I don't remember what variety of tomatoes they were; but, they grew and produced some decent tomatoes. Kind of like Early Girl size fruit.
100%...but I have to get the video out before people are ready, lol, otherwise its too late! ;-) Love that story....that should be everyone's store growing up as well!
Afternoon Jeff it’s always nice to see your videos being that your in my zone and area, it’s a bit harder when across the other side of the world. I am trying some brassicas inside but not getting my hopes up too much 😂😂. What if anything do you always start in January? Stay safe and stay gardening from Langley 🇨🇦☮️🌶✌️🧑🌾🥕🥬
Hey Ali, thanks! Basically everything can be started in January....its a little bit ahead, but if you have good light and space, starting everything a couple weeks early won't hurt anything! :-)

Thanks for the tips. I’m a first time grower. I will try growing seeds indoor. With the plastic dome that you recommended are there any chances of mild or fungus? How can I proactively eliminate the chances of it happening? Thanks
😁Do you snip off the seeds that are stuck on top of the onion seedlings when they have sprouted and are about 1-2” tall or just let nature take it’s course?
Exactly what George said. Seedlings are just too delicate and fall prey quickly to soil borne pests and diseases. It would be very terrible to wipe out your entire gardening prospects for the year before you even start.

😁Do you snip off the seeds that are stuck on top of the onion seedlings when they have sprouted and are about 1-2” tall or just let nature take it’s course?
I tend to top off my onions when they get 3-4 inches anyways, so the seed heads get cut off then if they haven't fallen off already. :-)
