  • There was a time, not so long ago, when the idea of another puzzle game sounded like pure suffering. Thankfully, some janky imports put things in perspective... and, of course, it helps that this latest puzzler-Asmik's Catrap, a remake of 1985's Pitman-is pretty darned good on its own, too.

It's wild that Catrap's undo mechanic predates even Fire 'n Ice, the main early 90s game I associate with undoing actions in puzzlers

It’s amazing how some games were ahead of their time (this was actually a remake of a 1985 game on the Sharp MZ-700). If you want another mind blowing Game Boy experience, check out X, which predates Star Fox by a year!

Probably many have played this on a Japanese pirate cart where it’s known as Pitman! I am so used to that name more!

One of the most addictive games I've ever played. It should be released as an app; they're sitting on a goldmine. Imagine if players could build their own levels and then share them online.

The characters featured in the game are not anthropomorphic cats (I wish they were, though, since I've always had a soft spot for those types of characters when it comes to cartoons and/or video games), but rather they are those neko characters that are pretty common in Japanese culture, whereas they are basically humans with the ears and tails of a cat.

i had this game as one of those 101 in 1 bootleg carts. recently picked it up on retroarch on vita, playing a few levels a day. currently stuck at level 27 which i know i got as a child...
also, there's one punishment for rewinding, time keeps running normally, so you're shamed with a bad time if you use it a lot

I actually went out and purchased a copy of catrap a few years ago thanks to the coverage it got here, as gameboy goes, it’s a unique little game, plus, I wouldn’t doubt a small community has sprung up around it thanks to the level editor (I think the manual even listed a few custom level passwords)
A shame it’s more than doubled in price since I bought it, because otherwise it’d be an easy recommendation

What a remarkable, sweet little game. I feel like a mobile game remake of this would have sold like gangbusters in the early iPhone era.

Another quality puzzler among a sea of mediocre games. This is another one I had seen ads for in VG&CE, and was always curious about, but never bought it as a kid. Glad to own a copy now, and looking forward to diving into it.

Still got a copy of Catrap for my old Gameboy. Never had the patience to beat it (despite having played it under the Pitman name on a friend's multi-game cart, I only acquried an actual copy rather late in the console's lifespan when I was mainly playing other games), but I still remember it fondly. I even tried powering up the old GBC the other day, but the Start button wasn't working any more.

I find this game really charming. The nice, bouncy music, the cute protagonists, the simple-but-creative commands... I just might pick it up on the eShop.
Also appreciated is the sheer lack of sleaze. A game like this wouldn't fly today if the catgirl wasn't humiliated in some way, be it by having her panties revealed or some other really creepy thing that people would be weirdly defensive of. This game is just incredibly *innocent*. That's such a rarity today.

I must be one of the few people unimpressed by the time rewind mechanics of such games as Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time... given that I had already experienced that first on Game Boy with this game :). If a Game Boy game from 1990 can do it, then doing it on a home console of the early 2000's shouldn't have been so surprising right :P?
It remains to this day one of my all time favourite B&W GB games.

I doubt the dev's decision to give the player a choice to play as a male or female cat-being was an attempt at social commentary. It's a video game.
