      @@gs425 yes ,a lot of previous Hornby 31s had the dreaded mazak or some even with the wrong type of body (for example r3880 31147) and previous model were Lima,airfix and triang so not as detailed

      @@1RichieRich this is true, however any manufacturer sub contracting to China could have same issue...even accurascale, and you won't know until years have passed. At least hornby have been good with warranty with them.

      Hornby expects £220 for an ANALOGUE loco with a tooling that’s about 15 years old…

  • @neilcrawford8303
    @neilcrawford8303 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    At last, a class 31 we can buy with excellent mechanical components and no risk of mazak rot.
    I've wanted a 31 for some time, but wouldn't touch the current model with a barge pole as I don't trust the quality, then along comes Accurascale. Fantastic.
    I bet someone in Margate is throwing a temper tantrum at seeing this.
    Another bonus is that you can order this model from your chosen supplier with confidence, as it won't be subject to some daft supply tier system that could leave your stockist with little or no stock. Leaving both the end customer and the stockist/dealer with a bad taste in their mouths regarding the manufacturer.

    • @andrewdking
      @andrewdking 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In Hornby's defense, my 10 years old Class 31 showed serious chassis Mazak rot during lockdown when I had a look at it. I contacted Hornby's Customer Technical Advisors and they replaced it with a new one and gave me my old body back which is an old livery scheme. At the same time, they also replaced a mate's Class 31 with the same issue. To reinforce their helpfulness, another mate in Canada had serious electrical issues with the brand new Peckitt B2 loco I bought him. They've replaced that to.
      As an aerospace mechanical engineer, I pressed them over their Mazak problems, but they made it quite clear their Mazak quality problems are now sorted and behind them.
      Being a new inexperienced company, how do we know Accurascale won't have the same issues. Mazak is not for the armature engineer who doesn't know how to correctly specify it, especially if just left to the Chinese factory to do their thing, which may be totally the wrong grade or quality of alloy for the intended purpose

      @@andrewdking yes I agree. It happens in time with many more manufacturers than just hornby

    • @andrewdking
      @andrewdking 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gs425 glad you agree. I get fed up with people putting Hornby down. Its our national treasure company, with an unnamed upper management arshxle in charge (not necessarily Kohler). Its like people saying a certain pub needs closing down. A pub is just a building, its the prat of a landlord who needs kicking out.

    • @gs425
      @gs425 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andrewdking hi Andrew. I've spoken about them many times in comments . Kohler is a dithering fool and a bad unprofessional image for the company. I don't think their constant screen presence is doing them a lot of good neither.
      But as you say mazak issues have been around since hornby tinplate days. And it's with other companies. When I worked in small gearbox design thankfully all our pressure diecasting was done in the Midlands by iso9002 companies with traceability , as you would have in your industry. But out sourcing to China can bring problems if not checked.
      I was on hornbys side with the 66 re release (they already made the model from lima moulds anyway) , same with the terrier which they acquired from dapol. Some of their moves of late with the rocket wagons and small coaches have made me feel the doubters were right though. They haven't helped themselves for image! As for who's in charge well you can see that from companies House...which is why a merge with Oxford didn't take too much imagination to expect.
      As for this model...well with a 31 made by triang, airfix with their smooth 5 pole motor, then lima who got the scale body right, then updates to that I'm railroad, then the super detailed hornby.
      ..why have accurascale made yet another ? And why isn't the comments section full of people moaning about that like they did when they saw hornby producing models other people have or were about to bring out

    • @andrewdking
      @andrewdking 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gs425 with reference to your last paragraph: well Accurascale is the small underdog company producing hi-fi details at an affordable price. Well they are now, but weren't when initially released (other models that is). We British love the underdog, so will give them the 👍 and Hornby the 👎. When I saw this video topic, my first reaction was, why, because Hornby's model is perfectly acceptable and mine had a rotating roof fan. However, Accurascale may have justified their model by wanting to produce many varients. I have no idea if Hornby's tooling also allows for all or most of the body varients. If it does, then Accurascale is just playing Hornby at their own silly game.

    • @alanrobertson9790
      @alanrobertson9790 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @barnabyjoy 1990s Lima £25 loco 0.2% average wage, 2020s Bachmann Class 47 DCC Sound £260 1% average UK wage. Quality has gone up but I think prices have risen faster than quality. Also attendant with the increased complexity the failure rate has gone up from about 2% 1990s to 8% present (about 100 in each sample). A simple comparison is with Lima Class 59 selling for about £35 in 1994 and the almost exactly the same Hornby Class 66 sells for £74 in 2021. The biggest reason I think for prices rising even ahead of the quality is that the price of something is not related to what it costs to make but by what the market will bear. The baby boomers have now reached a fairly prosperous retirement so there is plenty of demand. A retailer in my local model shop told me that of the leisure pursuits only fishing has a greater turnover than model trains. So the simple reason why trains are so unreasonably expensive is because you and I still buy them. The only upside of this is the entry of new manufacturers of which Accurascale gives exemplary quality at a reasonable price. The other upside is the range of models would be undreamt of in the 1990s with dinosaur diesels and pre-grouping steam locos being produced.

    A very enjoyable video, set in lovely countryside, in beautiful weather. Excellent camera work and drone footage of the 1:1 scale 31 but not an awful lot about the model. 🤔
    The comments section is becoming as interesting as the videos on this channel. There's more mentions of Hornby than Accurascale, which seems a bit strange, maybe understandable though and I've just added to that tally.😁
    Whatever the resident "price police" may say, I think Accurascale may have done us all a favour here. Still not a 𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒑 model, the prices on this highly detailed loco are well below those being charged by the "big boys" and people notice this stuff. Few people, very few, feel that current prices are justified and, despite what is being said by a couple of keyboard warriors on here, it's hurting this hobby.
    As a general rule, the smaller, more specialist manufacturers tend to be more expensive than the large, corporate companies and Accurascale seem to be bucking that trend. Among others, there will be people in Margate taking serious note of this.
    Folks have suggested that "yet 𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 31" is a strange choice. One possible reason behind that could be that, with all the very different variations of the 31, Accurascale may be hoping that modellers will invest in more than one of these. Careful selection of prototypes could give you a few quite different locos. Also, as they're to include some early examples of the class, these could be run on many steam-era layouts too, using several different liveries of coaching stock.
    One thing that was mentioned was "scale thickness handrails". That's a new one on me and I'll be interested to see what these look like on the fully-painted models.😁
