  • A military bagpiper band gives an exhilarating display to win the competition amongst fifteen teams.
    Enjoy the haunting martial tunes, the twirling cane of the bandmaster, the swagger of the pipers, the beat of the drummers and the interesting drills of the whole band display

    Several commenters have asked why the 'waddling'. I don't know for sure, but the Gurkha pipers have done these sort of marching routines for a long, long time and their ability to go into each movement with flair and precision is helped by the momentum built up during that side-to-side sway. I think the origins may be down to the extra challenge: 'we can play the pipes, we can march in time, we can do the usual passing routines that other bands do. I know - let's do it all at speed!'

      This (I think) is a pipe-band of the 3rd. Gorkha Rifles (3GORKHA) once the 3rd. Queen Alexandra's own Gurkha Rifles (3GR) an old and famous regiment with a high reputation for bravery in battle. What this band is doing here is the current Indian armed (& police) force's standard practice. Militarily it is ridiculous and laughable (see the comic events at Wagah Border Post.during the daily Sunset ceremony). They deserve more dignity than that, but they have to work for it. It is far below the pipe band traditions they received from the Scottish regiments of the British Army who once served in India . Believing that this is "nice' and "good" is a mental aberration. People say nice things out of patriotism and nationalism which shows their ignorance of what the true standard is - or ought to be. This same level of acceptance of the unnecessarily exaggerated standard of drill and drill movements throughout the sub-continent indicates a widespread acceptance by those who don't know any better. There are enough examples to view on You Tube. For those of British origins, HM's Foot Guards of the Household Division of the British Army is the 'gold' standard, but there are countless examples of good, smart (not exaggerated) drill; see the Gurkha Contingent of the Polis Repablik Singapura, the Royal Brunei Malay Regiment, older videos of the pre-1997 Royal Hong Kong Police and Australian, New Zealand and Canadian forces are somewhat different but, nonetheless, really good. Whoever writes India's Drill Manuals should remember the old adage: 'Too much of a good thing is good for nothing.'

      Hello MECowgo,
      Thanks for the comment! As told earlier, this was purely a theatrical performance, with the band concentrating on the moves as much as on the music.
      While standards may vary for Indian and Western bands, let me assure you some Indian bands can give the best Western ones a run for their money. I hope I can capture one of such performances soon and upload it for all to appreciate.

    So, is 9 pipes, 3 flat drums, and 3 snares a standard pipe band arrangement for the Indian Army? I just saw the video of the Ghorkas celebrating their 200th Anniversary, and they had the same breakdown of musicians.
    I'm quite certain that the heel-toe steps and the odd lift the leg, then smash down with the boot-heel is an Indian style... ;)

      In a military pipe band performance, some swagger is part of the procedure. Military Brass bands are much more formal and generally only do static displays.
      The swagger here is exaggerated, agreed, but it is all part of an act put on purely for the sake of the competition.
      Thanks for the comment!

    It looks like all those marching have one leg shorter than the other. The side-to-side swaying looks rediculous. Why do bag-pipe bands in mainly India do this strange marching ? Why don't bands from India follow the Scottish way of marching ?

    • @anakrit
      @anakrit  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jeyapaul,
      Thanks for your comment.
      Indian bands, like all others, do various types of marching as per the occasion.
      In this particular case, the band is taking part in a band competition, hence the sway and swagger is deliberately exaggerated to highlight the particular movement.

    • @manas456622
      @manas456622 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because the primary task of pipe band is to play regimental tunes when battalions March to battle , enthralling civilians is the last job to do, every regimental band has their own way of marching, our centuries long traditions are behind what you call one leg shorter. I would never call your regional or religious traditions ridiculous. And it's not the Scottish way anymore, our bands are performing like this from more than 2 centuries.

BUT THIS REALLY DOES NOT WORK, i will say it does not look when a Scot sees this form , simply it is shitty and should be not used by the Indian Forces . You can do better and stick when it comes to plying your pipe bands .Stick to the scottish traditions how the Scot's play and march.
