I'm back, and I bought the 100d about 3 months ago and I couldn't be happier. I've used it for outdoor night time shoots with and without a softbox and it is just such a BEAST. Really got the cinematic look. Shining through house windows from outside and it really looked like a nice sunny morning inside. Also, used it indoors as well in a giant lobby of a historic library with stone walls and massive stairways. This light was the key light and did amazing. I could not be happier with this light. You cannot even hear it while working on set. No need to spend $1,000.
@@SixSpeedSeven - Very long extension cords. ;) However, I believe I am going to be getting an Anker 200 watt power station. It's about $250 at regular price, and that is the price of 1 cheaper V-mount battery, and you would need 2, plus the inverter to power it the usual way. But with the power station, you can just plug the regular cord into it and be good for hours, depending on how bright you need the light to be on. This is such a helpful video for someone in April 2021 just starting to do research on which lights to buy to start shooting with for his youtube videos. Thank you.

Hi! Nice video. I just want to notice that the problem you have on your Aputure 200D is just an issue easily fixable. The fan in have been mounted too high. It touches the frame which cause the noise and have too very bad effects : 1) The fan slows down and never reach it optimum speed which forbid a correct cooling. 2) It uses more energy because as it can't cool down correctly the lamp, it's forced to run much often, longer ramping with harmonics and with more current peaks which can kill the fan or the fan driver at more or less long term as they are not designed for this kind of things. 3) As you ear, it's loud and quite stressing at the usage. Be careful. Any "Silent mode" can avoid this kind of problem. The only thing they can do is to lower the power of the output light to use passive cooling by making the fan not turn at all or at very low speed. But if the blades of the fan touches the frame, this will lead to no turn at all as their will not be enough couple to turn it. This hack can lead to burn the chip which power the fan. To correct that problem, you have to get to the manufacturer to not avoid the warranty by opening the case. If the product is no more under warranty, you just have to remove the frame to access to the fan and push it to the direction of the motor by letting a little gap to let the fan turn freely. That's all! ;)
Whew! Glad I caught this video. I've been researching a key light for awhile now while getting equipment for my channel. Looks like the 100d and a softbox will be my solution. Thanks for the review.
Caleb, I was pretty close to getting a 200d, so I'm very glad to know about the whine/noise situation ahead of time. If I was JUST using it for stop-motion animation, it would be ideal. Just so you know, Aputure has fixed this. I just got the 200x and it seems to have a different fan that sounds about the same as to the 300D. A bit louder, but absolutely no whining.

I almost ordered the light UNTIL I realized it has a fan too. I do have similar budget light from GVM which I used last 5 months and reviewed as well. The longer I am using it the more frustrating it feels. The fan sound is being recorded and few people commented in past that they can hear it and they don’t like it. Maybe open up the 200D and take a look at the fan specs and replace it with some comparable silent noctua? Can you see the light temp(heat not color) in the app? The godox shows it at the rear screen.
Regarding the reflector, my guess is that the change was made for costs reasons. The new one is a simple "stamp" reflector, as the older one is a stamp and the granular finish inside, that is done in a second process. Much more expansive to do. Take Care!
Nah, just a marketing gimmick as the hotspot the reflector create inflates LUMEN/LUX figures so people think it's a much higher output than it really is.
@@godsakes That is a valid hypothesis. But since the lights output were tested with the old reflector (did you watch the whole video?) and the cheap lights were equal or more powerful, I doubt that's the real reason. Since I do have background knowledge of how reflectors are manufactured, I'll keep to my hypothesis. Take Care.
@@brainiac9579 This particular reviewer is obviously wise to it and used a standard reflector, but that doesn't negate my point (some people will be fooled by it).
@@godsakes That’s exactly why I said it is a valid hypothesis. I am anxious to compare this reviewer’s results with the 100D and the 120DmkII and their actual specs sheet. See if they are actually boosted or not. Would be stupid to market a 200$ light to be more powerful than a ~700$ light. Anyway, let’s wait and see! Take care, guys!
Its pretty crazy how fast cheap lights are evolving.... first a huge wave of low cost RGB lights following the popularity of the boling p1 and now these 120D killers coming from aputure's own lineup. Would not have expected them to cannibalize their own lineup like this but thus is the rate of progress. I expect within the next 2 years the rate of progress will be absolute; presumably the next step for manufacturers will be to create a cheap light that is both crazy powerful like this AND offers bicolor and RGB... that would be the absolute zenith of everything i could ever want in a light.
That noise is pretty normal for how this particular fan works at startup. I am sure there's more silent options for the fan, either aftermarket or as a design fix. Let's hope it gets some attention
Love my 100D. Actually used it for shooting stills and i loved everything. The app works great and responds quickly. I actually enjoy the build quality for the price. I also use Godox for my strobe system and I love the 100d being the same size but slightly wider than my 400 pro.
@@Sayject still shinning bright my guy! Just got done using it for a 3 days set shooting product amongst an aperture 300 (which i loved) and two other strobes.
2nd one I've seen: you're so calm and well spoken! Combined with a reasoned presentation, worth the view. Since I've just stumbled in, now wondering if you're primarily motion (most likely) or still (where I've come from)... Hae a guddun!
Also, as a former computer builder, I wonder if...there's not a quieter $10 fan in a standard size you could swap out in 10 minutes? Panasonic made some quiet ones. Have to match dimensions, power requirements and plug (or wire count at least - some use a feedback wire for better speed control.) Worth checking, if the maker won't respond to requests. Quiet/sound control is very important, most of the time. Two additional factors you didn't compare, one is heat output over time. Could be inferred from actual watts consumed. The other is longevity. You couldn't test for that without a lab, but I wonder-at least, is it rated for some given lifetime?
Just what I've been waiting for! Great video as always man. Would've loved to see how the 100D matched up to your 120D in your studio setup e.g. talking head portions etc. But either way, thank you so much for this
Great Job, I would love to see a test done comparing the fresel lens attachment on the 200d vs the apature 300d and see how much worse it is 200d with the fresel attachment. I think alot of other people would like to see that as well.
The 100D that I used actually had that nasty fan noise too. It must be a gamble to get a good fan install on these. On the flip side the SL60W I have is really quiet, and the Sl100BI I have is a calm noise, but definitely louder than the SL60W
Hey Caleb, love the video! Only gripe is that you call the newer style reflector design as "almost completely unusable" which I personally don't think is fair. I own both the newer and older style reflector design from aputure and I do see the hotspot also with the new one but it's really only noticable when you're right about 1 meter away as you are showing in the video. Once you get about 1.5m away or further the hot spot mellows out and then fades away quickly. So at 1 meter the hot spot isn't great but feels like a rare use case at that distance for me. I think you should just look at the newer design as a more focused light modifier compared to the more scattered older reflector design. P.S. you can always find a bowens reflector similar to the old Aputure one from another company for cheap.
If Aputure really did cheap out with the fan in the 200 models, I wonder if 1) there is a Noctua fan that fits the size and performance and 2) if the wiring is complicated, or if it's possible to simply bypass the fan controller to have a replacement fan run continuously?
I thought about that as well. Good noctua or bequiet fans are way better than the cheap stuff they have put in those to save cost. Fans are usually the easiest modification, so I don't think that it'll be too difficult to mod a different fan into these lights.
@@HamerReviews i would if i were you. Saving that much money compared to the other competitive products i would definitely risk just unscrewing the lamp and looking for the connector. Just as a reminder, im not an electrician, but keep away from the power supply and stick to the fan. In computers that's where the transformer and capacitors lie, which can give you a severe shock. I don't want to be responsible for getting you a deadly shock.
@@desotaku5202 that’s fair advice 🙂 - to be honest, I can do basic computer stuff, I just don’t trust myself to get it back together in a working fashion, but I may well give it a go - what could possible go wrong 😆

Gerald Undone commented on it as well so... I dunno.
@@dslrvideoshooter when its so bright it still could be usefull when shooting trough a window outside of a house to "fake" the sun
That noise is pretty normal for how this particular fan works at startup. I am sure there's more silent options for the fan, either aftermarket or as a design fix. Let's hope it gets some attention
Thanks so much Caleb, always a joy watching your videos. These lights are amazing!
These new light looks like a good affordable choice especially the 100D, thanks for the great review Caleb !
Really nice video !! It's my dream light, perfect for my budget :) !!!
Love my 100D. Actually used it for shooting stills and i loved everything. The app works great and responds quickly. I actually enjoy the build quality for the price. I also use Godox for my strobe system and I love the 100d being the same size but slightly wider than my 400 pro.
Hey man, can I ask you how is holding up today? I’m planning on getting this as my light for my videos
@@Sayject still shinning bright my guy! Just got done using it for a 3 days set shooting product amongst an aperture 300 (which i loved) and two other strobes.
@@demetriusmccullough637 nice bro! I plan to get that for my at home vids!
does your 100d make any fan noise that can be heard by you or by the mic?
That is SO helpful! Thank you for a very clear and understandable comparison. You are a gem. Thank you for existing.
How have I just come across your videos, they are bloody amazing
This 100D is blindingly bright. Have to point at at the ceiling until I get some kind of diffuser for it that will fit, lol. Amazing product.
I was about to get the VL150.. so switch to 100d?
Great to see a review of budget gear that's in my price range. Thank you.
Great review, I found answers to all my questions right away!
Edit: just bought the 100d through B&H! Happy to get you some affiliate money Caleb
Just what I needed to hear. I have been need a light. As always keep up the awesome content.
Another great video Calen, and you're right, that fan noise is a big no no.
Thanks for this and great video as always! I can't wait for my Amaran 100X pre-order! It'll be my main light going forward.
Sweet! Just what I needed... now buy :) Thanks caleb!
Great review dude. Can't wait to see an update when you get your hands on the X versions. Bummer on the fan noise on the 200 :/ was almost sold.
Wow that's amazing, great video.
Thanks for sharing that info with us.
All the best for 2021.
Cheers
Hard to hear the fan over the roaring DJ at a wedding reception, so that’s a win! Thanks for the review!
Great work Caleb... as always ! 😉
Thanks a lot and 🍾 🥂 happy New Year !
Thank you for this video! Saw these announced and this was just the info I needed. You're the man
As someone who’s been using the SL60W I cannot WAIT to get that 100D😭
Same
Impressive review ! (both impressed by the new products, and the video quality)
Finally a clear and concise review!!!
I have been trying to learn more about lighting, but didn't want to spend an arm and a leg on them! These look like a good choice for me!
Just what I've been waiting for! Great video as always man. Would've loved to see how the 100D matched up to your 120D in your studio setup e.g. talking head portions etc. But either way, thank you so much for this
Awesome info and I really appreciate the honest hot take!
Great Job, I would love to see a test done comparing the fresel lens attachment on the 200d vs the apature 300d and see how much worse it is 200d with the fresel attachment. I think alot of other people would like to see that as well.
Thanks for posting! I was looking for a more powerful light for studio b-roll and the 200D looks like it will be my best bet!
Your channel helped me so much brotha. Thanks. Keep up the amazing work..
I’m wondering the same, I’m not sure I’ll be brave enough to take my light apart if I do have the issue when the 200X I’ve ordered turns up!
When I heard the sound of the 200d fan, it sure sounded like the fan had a bad bearing. I think a review of another sample 200d light would be in order.
Thanks. Surely that fan noise is an easy fix - it’s clearly catching on something as it turns. I still have two days to return my ML60 - phew, just in time 😀
can you please check this link, th-cam.com/video/IR9xTh2RSqs/w-d-xo.html , there is some fix the problem of the Aputure 200d
Just what I needed, thank you!
Hi Caleb. Great & honest review. Really useful Information (as always). I pretty much rely on your recommendations because they are orientated on practical use. So thanks for this Video. Thumbs up, Man.
I was just talking to their factory about these lights yesterday and seeing about getting some review units. Then today I see this haha
Looks like I'll be going with the 100D. Great and thorough review.
Good video Caleb. I'll be buying a few 100D lights based on your recommendation.
