I just discovered this channel and as someone who lives in Makanda, I just had to check if you had been here, and I found this video! Thanks for visiting!
The two of you are so much fun to watch! 😄 I thought Jen was going to get run over by that bicyclist 😮 You guys stay safe! Thank you again for all you do to share your adventure! Absolutely love watching your videos every day!
You are definitely feeling better Matt! So glad that it wasn’t a tooth nightmare - been there done that! Looked nice a nice cool off area in Milk (?) creek. Hope Jen got to jump in too! Hike on!

Greetings from Santa Cruz, California. Nice weather for the next few days but next week in the 100’s in the hot spots. Dry heat, like being outside in an oven. Back east it a Sauna when it’s hot. Pick your poison I suppose. Keep pushing west towards home. Safe travels!
Whenever my dog decides to drag me thru overgrown areas I sing some version of 🎵we built tick city, we built tick city, on long grass roads🎵 to make me feel better about the possibility of getting Lymes or "this protein is now poison" disease.
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes thanks so much, I remember hearing thru-hiker Jupiter hikes say he would day soak his beans and rice in a ziplock baggie and eat whilst on the trail. But I’d prefer warm myself but an interesting thought.
Yea, you can cold soak things if you want to take the time but it’s a lot less satisfying. A lot of the cold soak folks I know say they don’t mind it but they also spend a lot more time in town…
Ugh! Ticks…. Just getting over Lyme. I’m hoping that your ticks aren’t infected like ours here in CT. Glad you got the new shoes… Hierro’s don’t like pavement. The Fresh FoamX seems to lose its rebound considerably faster with more pavement miles. -- that might be happening for me because I’m fat but it’s been consistent for versions of the shoe after version 5. More importantly, thanks for taking us all along on this journey.
I think the heavier you are in general the faster the foam collapsed. But I have found the NB’s to be more durable than anything else so far that fits my foot
Man, that humidity is brutal! I know you aren't looking forward to road walking through the wheat fields of Missouri and Kansas with no overhead cover, hot sun, AND high humidity. Don't lose the umbrella and hope that the wind is not too bad. Ending the day in a creek is a nice touch. May you have many more (and fewer ticks). Hike on! Tortoise
A crazy-person-attracting face can be a problem. A wise old man once told me, listen to them long enough and they'll let you know what's wrong with them.
Those forests look just like the wooded areas in my part of IL (L&D 19). I have to give you guys lots of credit for hiking and camping in that stuff. While I spend lots of time in the woods the rest of the year, I have declared them off-limits-to-me during tick season. If I even consider going into them this time of year, 4 of them magically appear on my legs. The little ba@#$%ds!
Icaridin has been reported to be as effective as DEET at a 20% concentration without the irritation associated with DEET.[12][13] According to the WHO, icaridin “demonstrates excellent repellent properties comparable to, and often superior to, those of the standard DEET.” Icaridin-based products have been evaluated by Consumer Reports in 2016 as among the most effective insect repellents when used at a 20% concentration.
Years ago when she first started doing trips with me she had blonde streaks in her hair due to spending time in the pool at her college. Combined with her habit of giggling all the time o just started calling her blondie. It’s pretty much just my nickname for her. I’m just bad at remembering to stick consistently to anything

I kinda wish the ADT route headed for Taum Sauk and the Ozarks instead of the Katy. At least the Katy should be fast. That creek looks great, swimming is always the right call in the heat.

I noticed a minute left after the, "home sweet home", and patreon scroll. Totally worth staying with it.

Good video. In CT, the state has said that mosquitoes and deer flies can transmit Lyme too but very rarely. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick
Really? that’s a new one to me

Was not expecting "tick ridden testicles" 😂 may have spit out my drink

hahhahah Space Balls reference. Also you come up with some funny names for Tater's.🤣
Oh, Jen! Please watch Spaceballs!
"Matt's Tick-Ridden Testicles" would make a good band name
Spaceballs you say??? Don’t forget to “comb the desert”
Nice Spaceballs reference. lol
12:09 "Use caution in the Garden Jen" 🤣
How do you find trail angels? Is there a website or something?
Mostly people just reaching out. Occasionally they are listed on the HikingAmerica maps
What point do you consider the half way point of the hike ?
Hard to say exactly but the southern route total is around 4,900 miles so it would be somewhere in Kansas
Day 79. New shoe hiking is the best! Nothing better to make you feel like a beast on trail! And nothing worse than tick covered testicles.
New shoes and testicle ticks in the same comment. Hiker life baby!
Just a quick question with your favorite beans and rice recipe is it instant beans and instant rice and then some taco seasoning?
Yep! We have a more detailed recipe at www.firstchurchofthemasochist.com/2024/02/matt-jens-favorite-thru-hiking-trail.html

*I* don’t mind the walks through the fields. Easy going / progress. It’s mostly little miss negative butt mctater face who tends to go on about them
OMG it's the midwest........it's humid
I get the weird interactions! I have had numerous times of guys asking me to go to their basement to watch movies! 😀. Love your videos. Be safe.
It puts the lotion on its skin…
Was the senator laid to rest in that car? The arrow was pointing to it. Not sure it would require three signs though 😂

I just read that Mel Brooks is making a Spaceballs sequel!
The quest for more money! Granted that brief history of the world sequel looked less than great

That is the thing about long-distance hiking. Past a certain distance you really don’t get to pick the season.. transcend the suck :)

Hey Y'all.
What kind of shirt Jenn is wearing? does she like it?
We are both wearing Jolly Gear sun hoodies. They work great
Why is Jen now called Blondie? There must be a story there, or a joke rather? I really enjoy your vlogs.

I really don’t understand the logic behind some of the route choices. But I figure most places there’s a reasonable chance I’ll be back at some point
