I've dug a few holes in my time, some i found a little difficult to get out of. But one thing i did (either i was told or i saw someone doing it) was to start digging and if it was very hard, fill it with water, then while that was soaking in, move to the next hole. then fill that one after removing a few shovel loads. It's easier to dig mud! Easier and takes a little less time. Great wall in N.Z! I look forward to searching for it on google earth! it is going to be huge! Michael
That's a great tip! I don't know whey I didn't think of that myself as I found it really easy to dig after it had been raining. Lol, we all have those holes that we dig for ourselves that we can't get out of 🤣 Cheers man, I'll give you a wave on google earth!
Fantastic project filled with Hard Yakka mate, I was sweating watching you do the digging 💪👏👊. The backyard is going to be a pleasure to view once you’ve finished 🍺🍻👍👍👍👍👍
Cheers cobber, it was a lot of hard yakka, and that's how I wrecked my arm with all that digging (and why I was wearing that blue strapping). Still got a few hard yards to go but it will be worth it!! 🍺🍺🤙🏖️

I'd like some sunshine and blue skies right about now! I have dug some holes in my day, but nothing that major. Looks like a lot of fun (he says sarcastically)
Coming along nice 👌, Rob. Those steel C shaped inserts looks really handy and with that amount of concrete, its probably going to last for a very long time
Cheers Suj 👍🏻. Their website says 20+ years, similar to the treated pine we usually use around here. I reckon it should go more though because we are inland so there's no salt in the air where we live.
Cheers mate! 🤙 It was a long weekend of digging and faffing around with getting it straight etc, but not this weekend, this long weekend has been a bit of R & R time ☀️🏖️. Have to sort out a plate compactor this week.
Yep, that's right. but with instant concrete you can also just pour and then place the post in after. I didn't trust myself to get it all plumb and straight during that short window of setting time so I did it before pouring the concrete.
Hey Mike - you get it at Mitre10 - assuming you're in NZ - other countries have similar systems but I don't know the names of them. Link: tinyurl.com/8ks3xpkw Cheers 🤙
@@michaeladams2077 similar problem here, can’t find anything like it! love the look and so easy. Seems like USA would provide products like this…. Did you happen to find a comparable system?
Hey Rob, really enjoyed the video and quite relevant for me as I am thinking of doing something similar at my house, so thank you. It didn't look like you were putting any drainage gravel behind the wall. Is that something for later, or the wall is so short that it is not needed? Thanks mate.
Hey Bob, that's good to hear - the website for that company is pretty informative about the system (in description). One benefit is that it takes up much less width than having a 100mm post with 50mm boards (150mm+) where this system takes only about 65mm. The wall perpendicular to this one is itself a retaining wall and has all the drainage already installed, so I didn't bother. However, if this was a new wall, drainage is recommended (hose, gravel, geo-textile/screen). Be interested to see what you end up doing mate! Been keeping well? Cheers.
No worries, just ask for retaining timber, and you'll get the correct H level. It's either 4.8m or 6m lengths in NZ. Mine is 200x50 rough sawn. From M10, Bunnings etc, they all have it.
Hi, the math in this video isn't for getting the wall to height sorry, it's me using Pythagoras theorem to ensure that the new wall is aligned at 90° to the existing wall.
Yes, missus wife reprimanded me severely for that and then pointed out some in the garden centre a couple of days later. When I saw what they cost I almost shit twelves dollars and ten cents!
Great work Rob, looking good!
OH wow, thanks very much Cirtex! 👍
That's some gooooood diggen. Very satisfying to see the sleepers drop in so neatly. Getting there!
Cheers James, yes it's coming along.. Can't wait to get it filled and smoothed out!! 🤙
Shot, mate. Kicking off on retaining some garden beds on a hill out the back tomorrow. Thx for this!
Sweet as mate, hope it all goes well 👍👍 cheers, Rob
Brilliant progress Rob, you will have a nice yard in the end! Very neat job!
Cheers Paul. Getting there slowly but starting to see the goal post now! 👍
Nice job Rob , :) good to see ya back.

Those gal posts are a nice neat solution 👍
Yeah I reckon aye. Assuming use of 100mm posts, they take up a third of the space of a normal wall as well.

What kind of joiner do you use for two c-posts?
You buy them pre joined, but it's just two of them welded together back to back.
You can also purchase them joined back to side, for making 90° turns.
@@TakamiWoodshop I suspect these are spot welded at many places. Sections are too thin to accept any other type of welding.
Yeah I think so
Can you explain the math part to me ? Please I’m having a hard time getting the wall I’m working on at correct height
Hi, the math in this video isn't for getting the wall to height sorry, it's me using Pythagoras theorem to ensure that the new wall is aligned at 90° to the existing wall.
No drainage?
this is on a retaining wall that already has drainage.
what's that formula used for at 0:48?
It Pythagoras theorem, you can use it to ensure your new wall is square (90°) to the existing one.
@@TakamiWoodshop aah good ol Pythagoras 😎
You should have dug out those buxus instead of hacking them out. They were worth a lot more than that steel.
Yes, missus wife reprimanded me severely for that and then pointed out some in the garden centre a couple of days later. When I saw what they cost I almost shit twelves dollars and ten cents!
So, no backfill drainage? No bitumen paint? Hmm..the moisture in the ground will rot the sleepers in no time. Even the treated wood will rot.
not this shit bro, it's good for 20+ years. drainage already installed on the main wall adjacent. Dry as a bone
