- I finally get my hands on a vintage SVT. Ampeg purist will become crazy about the cosmetic. Plz note that I bought this amp already with screwed cosmetic. I thought old Ampeg SVT tone were an urban legend. You can't feel it trough a video, but let me tell you that this thing's for real!
Thank you, I love both Fender and Ampeg and own both and the Fender did sound pretty good but kind of tame compared to the SVT. I feel the SVT had a lot more presence than the bassman, your demonstration again proved why SVT is the king of all bass amps. I at one time was thinking of picking up a Super Bassman, now I'm glad I didn't. I own both SVT's and Fenders including a '67 blackface Dual Showman which also has more presence than that one although at 85 watts both of those heads would blow it away, it does sound very good through an SVT 810 bottom though. I think the SVT is a lot more mid forward than the Fender.
Towards the end of the video, where you cranked each amp up, I found I’m liking the Fender Super Bassman better than the SVT. The Super Bassman’s low end was slightly cleaner, and sounded much “tighter” than the SVT.
I’ve owned a couple of different US-made SVTs many years ago, and I didn’t like how the distorted the low end would get when the amp was cranked up. I ended up selling them, and I started using high wattage stereo power amps with a tube preamp.
But I sure miss having a good all tube amp.
I’m now going to see if I can find a Super Bassman locally to play through. If it sounds as good as yours does on this clip, I’m buying one!

Thanks Derwin! Same for me. I ended selling the SVT! It’s the punchiest amp I ever play with but too muddy for my taste. You have to try it once in a lifetime i guess haha. The super Bassman still my way to go and favorite amp!!! You should definitly try it!
@@jochoui The SB has better tone overall, but that SVT will throw a lot of thick sound out if you're in a 3-pc band. Both are nice thick and wooly...which is why I consider myself old school.

The Bassman had a bigger bottom end but I prefer the aggressive in your face tone of the Ampeg. Both sound great I think it would just be a personal preference

Bit late, but the vintage Fender tone stack's "flat" EQ setting is treble at 2, mids at 10, bass at 2, not everything halfway up.

Fender all the way, Ampeg rounder, but Fender juicier, better for recording and band mix. I use mine too and I will play it until my death.

Actually I liked them both in different ways. I could feel more sustain and depth w the old SVT. BUT....you had the bass boosted (I LOVE big bottom end...."mud" if you prefer, where as you said you don't), where as the EQ was neutral on the SB....AND you had the SVT cranked. That being said, the tone of the Fender was great w lots of low end.
“Flat” on the Fender would have been Treble 2, Mid 10, Bass 2. So all set to 5 would’ve been a scooped eq, treble and bass boosted some and mids cut from 10 to 5 (a lot?)
I don’t use a pick, but I noticed the Ampeg blew the Fender out of the water when you used the pick. Because of that I’ll go with the Ampeg.
Ampegs get the neighbors mad. That’s the way you gotta play.

you sure you didn't re tolex it to match your fender cab? sounds great, but you should get some black tolex and and an ampeg fridge ;)

I found this SVT in white/gold tolex, and yes I tweeded it to fit my cabs. (Ampeg blue grill cloth is nowhere to be found ). As a working non pro musician, I carry my stuff myself so a 140lbs Ampeg 810 is a no go!!! ;)
I've heard they are great tho! I'm happy with my Fender neo 610 and 410...
