The fact that this one faction (reactionaries) is where all the views and money exists in political discourse is an extremely strong indictment on the American education system and is a clear sign of the country's looming societal downfall.
That's the game. I still look pretty young even though I'm in my late 30s. I could have a quick blexit moment, become a black conservative, and make hundreds of thousands pretty quickly. Thankfully these people have the memory of goldfish, so I'll be able to switch back and they'll forget immediately.

Even my right wing younger brother, who should by all intents and purposes be in Trump and Shapiro's target demographic (abhors any sort of taxation or public assistance, still hasn't gotten the COVID vaccine, keep hate speech legal, the whole nine yards) doesn't vote Republican because he fundamentally disagrees with them on LGBT rights, abortion, and drug legalization and is devoutly irreligious. He would openly describe himself as right wing, and yet he does a better job of being a centrist than most centrists, who in reality are just tight wingers who can talk to black people without shouting racial slurs. AFAIK he's a nonvoter, which IMO is for the best.

Interesting book came out in 2011 by this guy Herzog who analyzed the kind of humor going on in Germany during war years and Holocaust. The article I read focused too much on the resilience and importance of Jewish people maintaining a sense of humor etc etc but there are significant portions of the actual text dedicated to just the kind of dehumanizing "comedy" all these chodes are missing and would love to lap up with a spoon. Showed just how important the psychology of mockery and blank irony is to inculcating an air of acceptance.

What's funny about the line about people getting more right wing as they get older is that I've watched my parents go from social democrats to anarcho-socialists as they've gotten older. Just checked Taibbi's age and he's five years older than me! I can't imagine the gall I'd have, the sheer unearned confidence to even think I can wade into "what the kids are into". The cultural gap between Gens X and Z is MASSIVE.
I'd go so far as to say the cultural gap between anyone who grew up without the internet and anyone who grew up with the internet is near insurmountable. This would be not just between Gen X and Gen Z, but even between older Millennials and younger Millennials. The internet fundamentally changed society in so many ways it's almost unprecedented: even comparing it to other sea changes in the history of media, like the mass adoption of radio or television, feels minimizing. I guess the closest analogue would be the generations before and after the massive spike in global literacy rates, but that happened over decades rather than the blink of an eye that was the internet.

Well to be fair I started out conservative and now I’m progressive. But I was also indoctrinated at a young age by my fundamentalist “Christian” family that have slowly and then all of a suddenly gone off the deep end of the Q conspiracy train and are so far right there is no redeeming them. I had to cut off all ties years ago for the sake and safety of my children. Some of the most manipulative, hateful people I’ve ever experienced and only through therapy have I come to realize how much abuse I’ve endured. BTW I still believe in God but it’s not the same God of these crazy fundies, who are mostly evil people nowadays.
It’s funny though when I take Sam’s advice to talk to my grandparents (who are not so far right) about issues instead of politics they’re to the left on many issues and don’t even know it. They’re for masking and vaccines (and think it’s crazy to say republicans aren’t), they’re for public healthcare for everyone, they’re for social security, they want to make sure children are taken care of after birth instead of obsessing only over pre-birth, they’re for a lot of election reforms and things like gerrymandering, and most recently they’re for not throwing out the constitution which is a pretty liberal idea nowadays!!
I’m glad you were able to begin healing from growing up in a fundamentalist environment. And I’m sorry so many in your family are that far gone, it must be painful to see it. @@Jimmy1982Playlists It’s really strange how old old school republicans like my grandparents (in their 80s) are seen as fairly moderate today. Although my grandpa has a fair bit of hard-wired racism he still struggles with from being raised in the middle of nowhere on a small farm that had dirt floors when he was little. I think black people were seen more as competition and scape goat for any problems since he was so poor back then and everyone in the entire region was super racist (lynchings and such). Nowadays that area is just regular racist.
The other week I explained that rent price fixing algorithm they talked about on the show to my grandpa, who is actually fairly good with computers and taught me how to build them when I was a kid, and he was vehemently opposed to it. Then when I brought up the fact that it’s “free market capitalism” which republicans love to tout, his eye bulged out of his head and his expression went blank. I feel like I’ve been slowly chipping away but the fact remains that people in their 80s aren’t going to change much.
I need to continue to focus more on my workplace which is owned by conservatives and leans that way pretty heavily. I’ve had some conversations with my boss which I think have swayed her opinion on some things, but she has always been more willing to change than most anyone there in a position of leadership. But I have made some impacts to improve benefits.

I wouldn't understand why. The number of people who identify as religious is in sharp decline,and last time I checked,most younger people are not rich.
The percentage of younger people who are religious is also skewing far away from right wing lines like evangelicalism and Roman Catholicism towards more left wing lines. Leo Tolstoy's works on Christian anarchism have seen an uptick in sales, the number of people identifying as pagans and Buddhists is going through the roof, and even theistic Satanism (as opposed to atheistic Satanist groups like the LaVeyans or The Satanic Temple) have become more popular.
I dated a theistic Satanist for a while. We didn't end up going the distance, but he was a good dude and things ended on good terms.
I am so disappointed in Taibbi. How can he claim Matt Walsh is funny? How can he say you can’t say things on the left without examples? He has lost it.

It's a great point made by Emma and Matt that Matt Taibbi's excuse that "The response was so overwhelming" is garbage. Matt Taibbi has gotten into bed with some of the vilest figures on the popular right and is being pampered by them and told by an adoring crowd of fascists that he is one of the few good ones. (I imagine he is also making a tremendous amount of money cashing in on his left reputation in these venal circles.) But the volume and the tone of the response should be what is concerning when it is praising Taibbi's work promoting Matt Walsh's anti-trans hate. What these fascists most desperately crave is to be recognized by mainstream and popular media and to have their sick ideas reaffirmed in elite circles and they will pay to hear their brand of hate coming out of a figure like Taibbi's mouth. It's embarrassing to watch, frankly.
