    Excellent. I really must give this technique a try. I love the look of it. It’s the best of both worlds, watercolor wet in wet and blooms and the creaminess and delicacy of oils.

    Very beautiful work! 🙌🏻 You could to the same thing with gouache or acrylics though. What is the point of using oils please? And what is your final varnish for this technique? Thank you 🙏🏻

      I use a retouching varnish which covers the oil and watercolour. The idea behind this is that you can create loose splashy backgrounds with watercolour and use the benefits of the transparent paint. But without having to mask off your whites. Using watercolour as an underpainting dates back to 19th century British painters.

    Awesome video! Thanks for sharing your process. Have you found the initial oil layer (right after the watercolor stage, before you go onto oil painting) hold up okay to varnishing?
    I was thinking of using Gamblin's Solvent-Free Fluid (It's a 40-60 Alkyd/Safflower mix) to isolate the watercolor from future varnishing before beginning to oil paint; since that layer would be100% fat, I'm not sure if it's *too* fat to paint on top successfully with straight tube paint. It'd probably take some experimenting on my part, but I really like the idea of using watercolor instead of Gamsol/oil as an underpainting. Or, maybe I just begin painting immediately (like you do!) and not worry about letting it dry first.

      Oil on top doesn’t affect the watercolour underneath and yes the varnishing works well using a varnish suitable for oils (I use a retouch varnish) which goes over dry to touch oil paint and the watercolour. You can’t use a water base varnish because it’ll lift the watercolour. I’ve found no need for an isolation layer and I checked with the clever people at golden (who wrote the article) and it’s ok. It might be worth you watching the introduction tutorial on this method I think you’ll find it answers a lot of your questions and where I got the source information from.

      @@MazArtStudio Thanks for the link, Maz! I've watched it (and added it to my favorites- it was quite helpful!) and I suppose the best way to find out for myself is to just try it and see if it works.
      I did e-mail a few companies last week (Gamblin & M Graham) with some questions about their solvent-free fluids/alkyds, and I'm just wondering if there's more than one "correct" way to protect a watercolor underpainting. I'm probably overthinking it, but the more I understand the more I'm likely to try it out, if that makes sense!
      Thanks so much for your patience and reply - I come from a digital art background, where chemistry doesn't really come into play. I'm excited to start oil painting again - I haven't done so since college 15 years ago, haha.

    Excellent work. Can we cover the entire water color painting with oil?

    • @MazArtStudio
      @MazArtStudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can. It can be used as an underpainting or to get the best of both worlds with watercolour washes and opaque oils.
