My grandfather was a pastor. He passed away a few years ago. His Bible was a beautiful hot mess. Everytime I read this I think about that. It is just like Mr. Adlder said, "marking up a book is not an act of mutilation but of love."

I love to mark up my books.
Either with a tiny visible dot or a triangle or circle. They help a lot.

2 tips from my experience: 1. use a highlighter only for quotable lines i.e. lines that can stand on their own, out of context, and still retain their insight. e.g. "The unexamined life is not worth living." 2. underline with a color designated for people and another designated for other books/writings.

Adler got me through grad school; he’s been a great friend to me and I wish I’d met him. But, we still have the books!

Thanks so much. I can't believe Adler didn't show an example of how to do it. It's a bit hard to imagine all in your mind.

This is fine but it takes more effort when you start reading the ancient greeks instead of simple ideas like here. It's a fairly big jump.
