Security Q&A - How It started and ended...

  • I have had a few questions about the security stories in the comment section.
How do you get into security?
    Is it a good job?
    Why did you leave?
    Weren't you morally conflicted?
    What do you do now?
I thought I would drop a video answering these questions to save some time replying to every comment. Hopefully it will help some of you and maybe dissuade some people from getting into it!

Sounds like all us older security guys have had a similar experience. At least 3 times a big security company has come in and undercut me and the boys - they would last about 3 weeks before the pubs would sack them and beg for us to come back and work for them. The big companies pay crap. Working in house is best for pay in my experience. I've learnt that if you work with a guard that loves the job and is excited every night to do it to look out for trouble cos they're usually punch happy or selling drugs. I think one of the worst parts of the job is when there has been an altercation and I've been hurt my employers never gave a crap, no healthcare cover, if I had to go to court for assault etc... there would be no lawyer hired for me for protecting their pub/club.

I can totally relate to your story, iam 22 years old now. Starter working security when i was 18, over 4,5years now. There is no room to evolve in your career with this job. Thats the biggest problem for me, you keep getting stuck on the same point in your career. I make good money working for my self, but it is not helping me in the long run. I will start college in September this year, to hopefully quit this job in a couple years and find something more fullfilling.
Thank you for your videos, keep posting them!

Same here, I’m 23 doing it and it’s not been as worth it as I thought, when I did the Sia course they made it sound like there was much better opportunity’s than than there is but now I seems like I’ll never get anywhere in this job so I’m looking into other things I could train to do with higher potential then I might just do security as a side job

It’s really interesting to get a first hand account of the door security industry. As someone who was into the rave scene in the 90s I’d love to hear any funny/interesting/revealing stories you might have about that era and scene. DJs, promoters or specific events or venues, or incidents etc. Completely understand that you have to be careful and not name names, for obvious reasons. I’m really enjoying your security stories and fitness content. Thanks for uploading 👍

As usual THANKS for sharing. As a veteran of the industry around your age it is cathartic to hear what I took for granted and enables me to heal in areas I didn't think I needed to.
Amazing how many guys' stories tend to mirror each others. I started behind the bar in UK and I was a tad underage - boyfriend of a waitress' mother. Then got the attention of the landlord when the guys employed on the door/floor weren't doing their jobs and I stepped up - not because I am a hero, but because it was a natural thing for me to do... good 'verbal conflict resolution skills'.
Moved to Australia, was a pro Muay Thai fighter/trainer and for years I worked in security - and yeah, when I was younger I didn't have a fixed good moral compass so it was easy to compromise. There was a spate of incidents here that ushered in the licencing requirements to be an SO. Man it was a joke, it was all 'red tape' and theory with obviously very little thought into the practicality. I remember having to do the course and I ended up teaching the 'physical conflict resolution skills'... the whole thing was to 'make SO's accountable' and it all became about writing incident reports - paperwork. It was such a joke that the industry became worse for a while because as you said, there were so many soft c0cks who thought they could quote a rule to a 120kg intoxicated Māori Rugby Union player, and his mates, and they would comply!
So many SOs were bashed and this was mid 90s so the female empowerment was just getting started and the female SOs thought they could just do the job.... they incited so much violence it became really dangerous to be a male SO colleague of theirs.... new firms trying to break into the market, big firms merging to get monopolies, fire arm regulations that became a joke... the whole industry was a disaster for over a decade.
I got older and have fixed moral principals and integrity which precluded me from a lot of work in that industry. Plus I became mentally unhealthy and was unable to continue.... not a really supportive industry it any aspect apart from the law trying to screw the SOs... Thanks again :)

@@thatgearguy I had an absolute love/hate relationship with female SOs... they were only good for one job - checking and looking after the female rest rooms, and even then they couldn't do that!!
They were an absolute nightmare on the door, they made EVERY possible altercation worse, and not one female SO could handle any 'physical conflict resolution'... those are facts.... controversial topic alright - in this modern socio-climate?!? LOL

Yeah i did security in oz early 2000s and it was when all this equality girl power crap was starting to come into the industry. So you had these empowered types come in with their fresh license and talking shit about how they could do just as good job as a man, but as this was crowd control events work, most of them had not had a single altercation to deal with yet. Then at one event, shit did kick off, fairly minor brawl but all of a sudden these 2 empowered females i got posted with at one of the gates are screaming into their walkie talkies about needing back up, meanwhile me and this other guy are doing what we can to de-escalate it and move them on. But i giggle every time i think of the fear those little “strong” females felt.

I worked for OCS & Chubb security. Where I lived it was offices that were secured, but they always wanted to me to upgrade my SIA license to work the doors at the weekends. They always said you get £5 more per hour, wow 4 hour £20 extra and I knew the club scene and how it worked. Never did the door work and eventually left security all together, to much hours and no family time

When I was 15, we were at a disco which was jam-packed with people. A bouncer came by pushing kids out of the way, and my classmate pushed him back.
Bouncer came back, raised a finger, told him to never _ever_ do that again, gave him a quick slap on the face, and a stern look. My friend just took it with a serious face. It was over. No trouble, no drama, no blood. A quick slap and a stern look can keep a lot of people out of trouble. These modern "de-escalation" tactics are just bad.

Just subbed to your channel. I am an ex US military guy, and currently work for the UK MOD as a consultant. I recently moved my family to the UK and have been educating myself on the security situation here, or should I say lack of security.. . Honestly I don't know if this is the place for us long term given the general perception that it's becoming more violent, but in the meantime, I have been binging on your content to get as much info as possible. It would be great if you made a "situational awareness" video regarding operational security and awareness of one's surroundings. General tips and tricks, etc. I feel here in the UK I've had to have eyes in the back of my head, but maybe I'm just a bit paranoid from my own experiences as well. Thanks for what you do.

I have actually done such certificates but in Germany you are required to do them by the IHK. (German thingy)
There are two certs. One of them is the big one the other the small one.
    The one for 400€
    The one for 241€
I had no money so I choose the cheaper.
I completed it, it was kind of hard in such short time to learn on your own so many things with the law stuff etc. But I do IT stuff so it was no problem after all.
As I was showing my employer the certificate he was wondering why I had done the big one.
I did not know it was the big one.
If I had read what was written on the website I would have known that the small one means you have to be there for 40 hours.
The big one means you have to pay for a test (241€) the course to learn all that would be ~2000€.
I worked for 2 month or so in this field and after that I had to leave because the welfare system but that is a whole different story xD.

I really like bushido!! The imperial japanese took the bushido code from the samurai and applied it to their military up until the end of wwii. One general was scared even to take a picture with an enemy general in case it seemed weak, but nobody cared and he ended up saving that Russian general's life when the Tsar was going to execute him, having blamed the Japanese general's friend for losing the war. I contemplated doing Door Supervisor but the pay is usually crap. SIA's aren't free, yet most of the jobs barely pay over minimum wage. Never mind all the risks involved.
