@@OK-mv4ih Oh man, that was a while ago, I'd have to watch it again to properly remember most of them, let alone give proper arguments as to why they are problems, plus I was in the middle of getting my biomed degree at the time, so my understanding of those topics was a lot better than it is now. Also, of the few that are vaguely coming to mind right now, like the ecological ramifications of it snowing salt, or even just having the snow be salty, for any period of time (that's what I took saltflake snow to mean whenever they mentioned it, I recall looking up if was just the name of a regular type of snow or some naturally occurring phenomena or even explained in a wiki about the show but didn't find anything, though maybe I missed it), or how sometimes people move in the water like it's water and sometimes like it's air depending on what's needed for the scene (thinking in terms of the difference in relative density and viscosity of air and water, and also I'm referring solely to the characters that live IN the sea and how they move, not comparing them to the people who live on land), I'm pretty sure most people would just hand-wave them away as just being how that world works, or being facilitated by the same supernatural force that allows people to breath underwater (which is NOT a nit I picked with the show, that's just part of the premise). Again, I'd have to rewatch the series to give more than this paper-thin overview, I think I last saw it...4 years ago? And only once, to boot. The snowing salt plays into the magical element of the show, with the fish people having Ena and the signal to the Ofunehiki sacrifice to the Sea God. They chose to add some supernatural elements so it's not entirely physics based and to make the plot seem more ethereal. About the underway physics, it is a bit jarring to see some inconsistencies, but I mean, it's anime, it's not Planet Earth. I brushed it off since, again, the ocean is just part of the aesthetic and isn't the focus but rather the love pentagon, but I can appreciate if a biomed student will be ticked off by this! I still love the show nonetheless, definitely going in my top ten.
@@OK-mv4ih I'm pretty much on board with your assessment, the technical physics and biochem inconsistencies (as I recall) were more moments where I cocked an eyebrow and thought "hm, I don't think this would work this way" rather than "the story hinges on such-and-such thing happening, and it's just impossible given what's already been established", so the overall show remains intact. Honestly, the message that came from this show helped me understand and somewhat get over my fear of change. Plus some of the quotes about love from this show really resonated with me for some reason
This was a wonderfully , explained great review on this beloved series. You have so much perspective and youve easily become a favorite to watch reviews for keep up the amazing job !!!
I finished the anime last week and loved it. The story, animation, soundtrack, pacing was just perfect. Unfortunately I couldn't get myself to like Hikari, Kaname and Manaka, which is a problem, since they are main characters. I loved Chisaki though. My absolute favourite characters are Miuna and Akari, as Miuna got a wonderful character development and Akari was a really great older sister and mother. Also liked how Sayu thought about love. I'm so happy they made 26 episodes, I would have ranted if it was compressed into 13 eps. like Angel Beats! was.
I just finished this series and my god it was just stunning. When I started watching it I actually didn't really like it. I felt like in the first episode we got a bunch of dialogue explaining the characters relationships and feelings when they could have just showed them to us over an episode or two. That was the vibe I was getting for the first few episodes and the only reason I kept watching was because everyone kept raving about it, and because of the beautiful and fascinating setting, which I loved basically right from the start. It wasn't until episode 8 that the I really connected with anything in the show and from episode 12 right through to the end I loved every minute. I agree with you about the time skip too, I was frankly amazed at how well executed it was and how the story flowed naturally from it. And I wanted to cry every time Chisaki was on screen in the second half. The show has its flaws, as you say, but I barely even noticed them while I was watching it. The themes are so strong too, as you say and the final message is one that I really liked too.
The ending made this anime a huge disappointment imo. Everything really good with a trash and lazy way to end the series. No clue why a lot of anime’s think it’s ok to just leave the end without any true closure to them. Everything just unfulfilled and left to our imagination.
I love this series so much and it's a little bit frusrating how unkown it is. Great animation and theme. And I loved how my less liked characters became my favorites.
I liked the anime but there was some major flaws for example: Hikari was annoying he made me feel like I was watching eren The time skip was some what stupid and the fact that hikari and his friends didnt age was kind of stupid and it ruined most of the ships and it made my boy tsumogo a bit out of character And finally how everyone was runing from the harsh truth they hear or something that suprises them But aside from that rant I liked this show I would give it a 7.5/10
It would be really nice if you had your review on blogs too! I was looking for a reviewer like you who would go in depth of an anime. Your reviews are awesome Keep up the good reviews!
+Trabeus Thanks! I could make a website, but it would just take a lot of time setting up the site, actually compiling/organizing all of my scripts into concise written reviews, etc. I have absolutely zero experience in web design, so it'd probably look like shit haha. Who knows though. Maybe at some point in the future when I have the time.
ArcaneThinker Next week's gonna be Serial Experiments Lain (I've had that one planned for a while). The week after that will either be Tekkon Kinkreet or Summer 2015 Anime You Should Be Watching. Regardless, it'll be within the next three weeks.
I think I ought to rewatch this show. Mari Okada did a good work of emotionally draining me with Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans. I need something lighthearted.
I was really sceptic the first two episodes but then i watched the beginning of this review and embraced the message to be patient. I'm glad I listened. The theme of this story was not only change but also the endess war between nature and civilization (climate change ya know) and that really speaks to me. Every characters except for Manaka and Mhunia were interesting to me. In my opinion the two girls were too moe or something. Can't stand that. Actually felt it did cross the border to melodrama for those two sometimes. And I also felt a bit dissapointed about the ending but for another reason. Beautiful and original story never the less and the chemistry between Chii and Tsumugu made me into a goofy emoji at least 5 times ^^
one of my first anime, first romance drama, i accidentally set the bar extremely high for the rest of the anime i would watch from then on, and my first anime ever was guilty crown, set the bar high when it comes to music in anime didn't i
Sorry but Miuna best girl should’ve gotten a shot with hiki. Now don’t tell me you weren’t thinking that too because we all damn know she had more development and made more of a match for him. No offence but Manaka was more like a little sister than anything to hiki in my opinion. Best arc out of anyone? Chisaki hands down no doubt don’t @ me. Because seriously she had the best fit in this for me
I've also just finished rewatching this anime, I have a difficult time finding something similar that's currently airing so most of this year it's just rewatches. Nagi no Asukara is really everything a good romance anime needs and more, it's visually outstanding, the soundtrack is beautiful and the characters are multi-dimensional. Had me cry several times (first time being in the first Ofunehiki). And look at the eyes, even surface people have amazing eyes! Also I'm glad I'm not the only one that got similar vibes from NagiAsu and Shinsekai Yori - not nearly as serious though, but a lot in common and just as enjoyable (watched Shinsekai 3 times so far)
i likd both openings because they really fit with their half of the series and with whats happening in the opening to but i like the second one more then the first one, why? no freaking reggaeton voice robotization (definately an exageration) the piano effect on the beggining of the op mixed with the frozen sights is breathtaking, and the second op fits better with its half than the first op fits with its half, they both do but the second one more.
Thank you very much for this beautiful review , you know this anime has become my favorite anime of all time i want to see more from the people in project-118 i want to know what inspired them to create this masterpiece, this is for sure the best way to describe is by saying this is the structural for any new anime in drama genre or even in tv show or movies, i cried a lot throughout watching this anime i never felt so much emotions from just watching an anime since (a silent voice) i want everyone to watch this anime and enjoy to feel all your emotions, some people well not agree with me and some other would say there are a much better anime drama out there but this anime is so different, please give it a try and i hope you like it .
Best review of this anime, I have to finish this anime, been watching it ever since the first episode aired, but I'm gonna buy the collectors edition box set, thanks for remembering nagi asu
9:47 same I just finished watching this show yesterday after a week of watching it and it was way better than i thought it was and it was possibly even better than the other anime i saw earlier this year. I wish the ending made a bit more sense just like what was said in thw video but I'm glad i enjoyed it and I'd rate this show a 10 out of 10 it was really great and emotional and I'm really happy i watched this show. I wish the show could of continued for a third season and maybe a movie too but since the show ended after almost 7 months it seems that that'll be for this great show but i guess when i start the third season of the other anime i start to watch this week I'll feel a bit better thst nagi no asukara was great and ended great and happy and now i need a moment to release my feelings 😑😐😥😓😟😤😔😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 It had so many emotional moments and i feel more emontional after seeing it. I hope the next few days from now I'll get over that this show is over and possibly not gonna come back like hpw i thought for a videogame by tattletail but I'm pretty sure I'll get over this great, sad and possibly not gonna return great anime. And i hope i didnt upset anyone at the last part
I have an ability. It's the ability to know what characters in an anime have the biggest chance to hook up. Although, sometimes, it fails. For example, in Toradora, I could tell who would become a couple. However, sometimes when the characters nothing but just blank slates in the first 3 episodes, I have trouble finding out. I only give myself 3-4 episodes to figure out if the 2 characters in question will become a couple or not before I consider it cheating.
LOL. I love that you put physics professor under dislike. While it didn't bother me significantly, the idea that life under the sea felt just like on the surface was something that I had to remind myself not to question.
The story, music and world lore was fucking amazing but i am a romance lad and tbh i couldn't like hikari's character and i kinda shipped tsumugu and manika but you can't always get what you want. Also kaname was the most tortured character.. like bro the poor kid was taking L's left and right with love.
Am I the only one who thought that it was so fucking sad when Monika, Kaname and Hikari got to go back to school together without Chisaki, since she was so much older than them.
Great review. Although I think you sort of floated the line between showing scenes with spoilers or not and I think if you were going to do that you probably could have picked some more impressive scenes from the second half instead of showing scenes from the first episode over and over again along with random post-timeskip clips :P Also I really feel that this is a series that benefits *massively* from rewatching. The second time through you really catch all the foreshadowing and subtle hints in the story and it kind of blows your mind when you realized you missed them. I thought it was good the first time, but the second time was like a new experience.
It reminded me of denpa onna and shin sekkai yuri, sprinkled with some glasslip and topped with so little monogatari that it's actually extremely hard to notice.
This one definitely made it to my top 10, i just loved it. I know it does have too much drama, but it made it believable, you'd be like "Ohh I see" and it is the same for the stuff that goes around. I like how they also don't just throw the racism themes, they actually hint why it is happening. I know a lot of people may disagree but I actually found myself more invested on the second half even though it was a bit dramatic. Maybe it was because I did not expect it. This is definitely one of those anime that I thought would rely solely on its beautiful animation, but proved me so wrong.
I really enjoyed this anime once i eventually watched it. but initially the inconsistent and frankly nonsensical underwater physics really put me off and was the biggest blocker for me. I recently gave it another chance though, and was able to overlook the nonsense related to the environment and just started accepting it. now it has honestly become one of my favorite animes of all time. the environment is amazing and beautiful and the underwater world is like something out of a childhood dream. I grew up by the sea and have always loved to swim underwater. I would've given almost anything to be able to live in a place like shioshishio. Im also a bit of a sucker for a good time-twisted tale. also, the soundtrack is amazing!
They tried to recreate this type of show again with Glisslip with Nagi no Asukara elements. But, it failed hard. Only thing worth seeing is Miuna and Sayu appears as character cameos in Episode 10 of Glasslip. imgur.com/a/vfxiE
I actually seriously rofl'd at the "Physics professor" thing at the end, because I majored physics and some stuff seriously threw me off. But I guess you don't need to be deeply invested in physics to understand that the underwater setting is kind of a "look, just don't think, it is stupid but it serves a purpose" deal. Still, really liked the review and the anime as well, though I am still a bit salty that my ships were frozen in time.
I like the show, its great but the Plot is all over the place. the problem is that everyone just likes each other and worries what other people are going to feel.
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. When it comes to romance anime, I do get sick of the "one likes another, that one likes someone else, feelings change and they get together in the last 5 minutes of the show" norm. Sadly this one does that too. Even after certain characters get over emotions for one character and realize another is worth the effort, there is no admission direct love, even with all the characters/couplings that say they are in love. It also bothers me at the end when one of them literally says nothing between us has to change, like wtf that's the theme. Idk, the romance buildup kind of fell apart at the end. There's only one scene that actually made me feel.
I love ssy and I liked nagiasu well enough, but I'll never agree with the comparisons. they're two completely different shows and one dealt with worldbuilding (and timeskips) way better than the other
I loved this anime, but the ending felt so unfulfilling. In the second half, Miuna became my favorite character, and although I don’t support the romance between her and her crush, it sucked to see everything go wrong for her anyways.
It’s not really incest imo since they aren’t related at all. It’s like step bro and a step sis getting together. Weird yes but nothing really wrong to it. Anyways though you’re correct the end was just trash and left everything open ended to the series. Really none of the couples ended up together since none of them had and closure to them. It’s a lazy and awful way to end series which in my opinion made this anime from being really great to just decent at best.
The animation looks amazing. The colors look almost too bright though. PS: You seem to enjoy dark, dramatic, and complex anime (KNK, Fate Zero, Mardock Scramble, etc.). So I'd assume that you're not a fan of stuff like K-ON or Sword Art Online?
PockyCandy I'm pretty open when it comes to genres. Moe is not a problem for me (I do like K-On for example). Actually, the genre I've probably watched the most is romance/rom-com.
This anime completely ruined me. I have a list of anime ordered from worth watching to best and favorite anime based on many opinionated friends, fans from expos, and top 10's. I've watched and struggled to see why the 3 or 4 anime within the romance genre recommenced above it compile to a better story than this one.
This is one of those shows that you have to have heard a recommendation from someone you trust before watching. The first few episodes are, how should i put it, "generic" and give off the impression that the whole show is gonna be these 4 kids going round and round and round in love triangles and squares and jeez, 26 episodes of that sounds like bad times...i know i would've dropped it, had it not been for reviewers giving it good scores and such, and i'm glad i stuck around for the whole thing. And yeah, as with any non-fighting anime, you have to be in the right mood to watch it, it's best watched when you're feeling good and relaxed :D With all that being said, i still don't like Hikari :D
I just want to know before I watch this... does anyone actually get together? Are any feelings actually responded to well? I don’t want to get blue balled. Please don’t spoil it
I liked the the visuals, the setting and story, to some level. But the love drama was unbearably bad. I don't know why, because I am sucker for love dramas, but after these years the most vivid memory from Nagi-Asu is my eyes rolling into back of head, from the cringy love drama.

My absolute favourite characters are Miuna and Akari, as Miuna got a wonderful character development and Akari was a really great older sister and mother. Also liked how Sayu thought about love. I'm so happy they made 26 episodes, I would have ranted if it was compressed into 13 eps. like Angel Beats! was.
xpforeverGAMING what Tsumuga he was honestly my favorite character
xpforeverGAMING i liked Miuna and Sayu
Wow man, you really put this show into perspective for me. This was great.
+Weeaboo Destroyer Thanks! Glad I could help :)
Ohhhhh so it's from the same people that made Anohana.... That's why I was thinking about that show while watching this one
This was no short of an amazing review of this wonderful anime you described everything I felt about this anime in this review I couldn't agree more
I love this series so much and it's a little bit frusrating how unkown it is. Great animation and theme. And I loved how my less liked characters became my favorites.
I love this anime so much. I watched this anime like 10 fucking times and appreciate it even more everytime. I love your review btw. Bless ya matey
Also your reviews are super helpful if someone is looking for their next anime
almost 5 years later and miuna still best girl
Koyomi Araragi, I love you man, but I disagree with you
I've probably watched over a 100 animes by now and a lull in the sea is by far one of my favorites
Your reviews are great. Much better than a lot of popular reviewers.
saintyoo Thanks!
Your reviews are absolutely amazing! You should do a review on Beautiful Bones or Waiting in the Summer
If Shinsekai Yori have animation and character of this caliber.... O.o I cant imagine, it will gonna be so great.
3:47 why haven’t I heard about Shinsekai yori before?
I liked the anime but there was some major flaws for example:
Hikari was annoying he made me feel like I was watching eren
The time skip was some what stupid and the fact that hikari and his friends didnt age was kind of stupid and it ruined most of the ships and it made my boy tsumogo a bit out of character
And finally how everyone was runing from the harsh truth they hear or something that suprises them
But aside from that rant I liked this show I would give it a 7.5/10
Great job, that review was awesome! Congrats!
It would be really nice if you had your review on blogs too!
I was looking for a reviewer like you who would go in depth of an anime. Your reviews are awesome
Keep up the good reviews!
6:52 Triangles are polygons lol
Looks interesting and nice puns btw.
arcanethink Thanks, I tried haha
So..... Tekkon kinkreet next time ?
ArcaneThinker Next week's gonna be Serial Experiments Lain (I've had that one planned for a while). The week after that will either be Tekkon Kinkreet or Summer 2015 Anime You Should Be Watching. Regardless, it'll be within the next three weeks.
Under The Scope Reviews Lain's review is good too and i can wait for tekkon kinkreet :D
Beautiful and original story never the less and the chemistry between Chii and Tsumugu made me into a goofy emoji at least 5 times ^^
one of my first anime, first romance drama, i accidentally set the bar extremely high for the rest of the anime i would watch from then on, and my first anime ever was guilty crown, set the bar high when it comes to music in anime didn't i
watched this on your recommendation. Thankyou I loved it. Seen your other recommendations tho.
Because seriously she had the best fit in this for me
I love this anime so freaking much....
It's like a fishing pole... it reeled me in😂❤❤❤🙄
Manaka honestly got a LITTLE annoying with how much she ran away sobbing. It just... got old fast. Loved the rest of the anime tho
I loved It but just wished that Manaka died or just left because I hated her that much
I actually thought the ending was decent am I wrong
This was one of the first drama/romance anime I watched. It is fucking beautiful please watch it!
You just earned yourself a new subscriber.
Also I'm glad I'm not the only one that got similar vibes from NagiAsu and Shinsekai Yori - not nearly as serious though, but a lot in common and just as enjoyable (watched Shinsekai 3 times so far)
this review was insanely funny and informative. i laughed so hard at the puns
i likd both openings because they really fit with their half of the series and with whats happening in the opening to but i like the second one more then the first one, why? no freaking reggaeton voice robotization (definately an exageration) the piano effect on the beggining of the op mixed with the frozen sights is breathtaking, and the second op fits better with its half than the first op fits with its half, they both do but the second one more.
Thanks for the review...Now I really want to watch this anime ^^
Could you also review Kiznaiver? 😊
PartyGirlJuny It's a great show. The second half is fantastic, I'm sure you'll love it :)
What is the song at 7:05?
august tierney it’s one of the bgm of the ost
9:47 same I just finished watching this show yesterday after a week of watching it and it was way better than i thought it was and it was possibly even better than the other anime i saw earlier this year. I wish the ending made a bit more sense just like what was said in thw video but I'm glad i enjoyed it and I'd rate this show a 10 out of 10 it was really great and emotional and I'm really happy i watched this show. I wish the show could of continued for a third season and maybe a movie too but since the show ended after almost 7 months it seems that that'll be for this great show but i guess when i start the third season of the other anime i start to watch this week I'll feel a bit better thst nagi no asukara was great and ended great and happy and now i need a moment to release my feelings 😑😐😥😓😟😤😔😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
It had so many emotional moments and i feel more emontional after seeing it.
The animation is OP!! Great review man! :)
Anime Dude Thanks!
please do tokyo magnitude 8.0?
I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! I cried every time 😭😭in thr end and more times
I thought it was good the first time, but the second time was like a new experience.
omg your channel it has all the series i watch
It reminded me of denpa onna and shin sekkai yuri, sprinkled with some glasslip and topped with so little monogatari that it's actually extremely hard to notice.
Aaaaaaaand mentions shin sekkai yuri in the review. Go figure.
I'm literally making a video about this anime.. it was one of the best I've ever watched
A Lull in the Sea is amazing anime I've ever saw in 2021.
This was literally the first show to make me cry the story line was so amazing like slice of life romance anime just do something to you
ahh lol, lights a cigarette, amazing in all aspects right but the ending....(-_-) maybe i just needed more.
Can we just sit down and acknowledge that this show had a fucking love octagon???
i love your reviews XD
Im watching this anime right now and i love it its a bit sad though reminds me of clannad a bit
I don't have to say, thank you so much! (Tearing Up)
4.45 weird fish curses out of 5 xDD
This anime is amazingly good
I wanted Monica and ekari to kiss once 😫😫
This anime is absolutely beautiful :)
They tried to recreate this type of show again with Glisslip with Nagi no Asukara elements. But, it failed hard. Only thing worth seeing is Miuna and Sayu appears as character cameos in Episode 10 of Glasslip. imgur.com/a/vfxiE
This is the greatest anime of all time
I actually seriously rofl'd at the "Physics professor" thing at the end, because I majored physics and some stuff seriously threw me off.
I watched one episode before the characters pissed me off. Particularly hikari
Manaka for me
You gotta watch the whole thing, trust me I wanted to drop it so bad. It's so worth it
@Frosmoth yea true, i just finished it today and it was beautiful

I’m surprised that this was the same writer as Anohana. Cause I really liked this show, but I thought Anohana was quite mediocre
I love ssy and I liked nagiasu well enough, but I'll never agree with the comparisons. they're two completely different shows and one dealt with worldbuilding (and timeskips) way better than the other
This video actually has a second part. Check out the follow-up video: th-cam.com/video/MAJSxT7-m0E/w-d-xo.html
Shinsekai Yori is that you ?
Under The Scope Reviews Have you watch K-On : The Movie ? It's quite good .
ArcaneThinker Yes I have, and I agree. I (probably) liked it more than the series itself.
Under The Scope Reviews I should watch K-On sometime..........
Anyways, is it kind of creepy that I comment on all of your videos?
PockyCandy Not at all. If anything, it's encouraged.
Nagi no asukara?! Don't make me cry again
After hearing that music I had to go download the soundtrack because all of the feelings that came rushing back due to those sounds
This anime completely ruined me. I have a list of anime ordered from worth watching to best and favorite anime based on many opinionated friends, fans from expos, and top 10's. I've watched and struggled to see why the 3 or 4 anime within the romance genre recommenced above it compile to a better story than this one.
To me, this show is basically a drama, and romance version of Shinsekai York.
EIDT: REALIZED YOU MENTIONED IT TOO LATER ON LOL
looks great.
And yeah, as with any non-fighting anime, you have to be in the right mood to watch it, it's best watched when you're feeling good and relaxed :D
With all that being said, i still don't like Hikari :D
I just want to know before I watch this... does anyone actually get together? Are any feelings actually responded to well? I don’t want to get blue balled.
Please don’t spoil it
Yes two couples get together
Love the puns
When I started this anime I saw that Monica looked like menma
@@user-ty6sd4bc4e You must come from Netflix?
@@user-ty6sd4bc4e honestly forgot all about this comment so I had to reread it 😅but I've noticed a Lull in the Sea was recently added.
MIUNA DESERVES BETTER.
I liked the the visuals, the setting and story, to some level. But the love drama was unbearably bad. I don't know why, because I am sucker for love dramas, but after these years the most vivid memory from Nagi-Asu is my eyes rolling into back of head, from the cringy love drama.
after ep 13....shit just got real.
Any word better than "Brilliant?"
the first 14 eps were brilliant after the time skip it went down here fast
Yo how do they pee or poop?
