Do you need to shut off gas and water?
As a software engineer, I would reccomend people do two things to protect their data. First, identify all the files you want to protect and then copy them to a storage device that will be your offline store - this device can be an external hard drive, usb key, or dvd. When the copy is done, place the device into a safe - one that is metal, waterproof and fireproof. Your data will now survive any disaster. Second, have paper printouts of important stuff like your passwords, bank account details, deeds to your house, etc. Your goal here is to have all your digital information written down. Put the papers in the same safe. Last point - review and update your offline backups regularly.

Agree!! There are so many that pinned or saved data that they thought would be useful when there was a disaster, but like gold, if you can't hold it, you don't own it

Amazon sells fireproof document bags. These would be easy to grab if you needed to evacuate. Just another option to keeping documents/valuables safe.
Just a heads up, with solid state storage like usb drives/ssd hd, data will lose its integrity over time if not used occasionally.

Hi, I am also reading that book now. I'm about a little over half way through the first one. It really make you think about how you would handle those same issues they are experiencing as well think about how long would you last if you were in that same situation.
It also made me take a look at what I have and how to make my prep stash better.
Remember, the most important prep we can ever have is Jesus Christ and the salvation only He can give us.

I have a few things inside a metal food container inside a metal filing cabinet. No clue if that would help but it makes me feel better
It would take us back to the age of hunter/gatherers.. at least 100 years ago, lots more folks knew how to raise/process animals and grow crops… it would become the age of hunter/looters… times will continue to get worse, as ammo runs out, things break, the remaining tech devices give up with no means to repair or replace anything. It will be a true reset.. food for thought..

FYI you can cold soak rice so it doesn't require fuel, and since the water isn't evaporating you'll get near enough all the water from it.

Excellent recommendations. In addition to the items you listed, people who live in colder climates should also have a way to heat their living area. I have two wood burning stoves and plenty of cut/dry/split firewood. I realize a lot of people don't have that particular heating option, but they will need to figure something out or they will be very uncomfortable in the winter.

I wish I could afford a wood stove. I've been experiencing an urgent thought that I need an alternative heat source but I don't have the funds. I'm worried and not sure what to do. I'm alone so that doesn't help either.

The thing no one talks about is how likely any building that is tied into the grid has a very high chance of burning down. We all would be starting over no matter what preps we have. Store your preps in a building not tied to the grid cabin, shed, garage, root cellular, ect

If you can't afford land, rent a storage unit.

Likely true, @@joemarchinski914 but if your backup Preps are locked in a storage unit (usually brick or concrete with metal doors) most likely they won't get burned-up.
The locks may get fried by emp, but the facility is not likely to get burned-down.
Bypass the access to get to your unit and use your solid keys to unlock your padlocks to get to your preps.
Fried electronics may make it somewhat difficult to get in, but that's just a delay. It did not get burned down with your Preps in it, like your house did.

A basement is a good start on a fallout shelter, but you need to examine the ceiling of it. If the basement ceiling is the floor of your ground level you have minimal shielding. This can be solved by stacking or piling dense material in the room above the basement. Books, bags of dirt, canned goods, a filled water bed mattress, lumber or other items.

I have thought that as well, but I went with cardboard because it was way cheaper. It also turns out that its a decent insulator as long as it doesn't get wet. The main thing is that what's inside the faraday cage doesn't make direct contact with the side of the cage.
@@diypreppertv I figured as much. Rubber is pretty pricey. We got 4×5×3/4 mats from Tractor Supply for $40ish. We used them to line our dog cage floors. Easy to clean and very durable. Thanks for the reply DIY Prepper.
Just need a solid non metal liner. It’s should not touch the metal. The metal conducts the plastic cardboard non porous fabric material limits pass through of the pulse.

A test if your faraday box you made works: put your cell phone in the box and close it up The using another phone call your phone. If it doesn’t ring it works. Hope this helps.

OK, lots of great ideas, which depend upon there being some form of communication available. All good, all could be useless. What I did during my military time makes me take the following positions. Way back in the 1960's I was trained about this stuff.
First; Understanding just what an EMP (electro magnetic pulse) does will lead you to just leaving the electronics behind. How this kind of event was discovered was when the USA tested the HYDROGEN BOMB. The explosion created an EMP that knocked out the power and phone lines in Hawaii, several thousand miles away. It's best to be prepared to live as if it is 1800, period
Second; If there is nuclear war, there will be no safe place to go, except under ground, and you will have to stay there for at least 2 years. Can you store supplies enough for each member of your family, to last that long?
The real danger, after the explosion (gamma radiation) the resulting fallout (alpha and beta radiation, the stuff a gigger counter looks for) lasts for thousands of years, and only slowly goes away. Pray we NEVDR have nuclear war.
Third. In the case of am EMP, having a good natural water source, one big enough to have crawfish (food source) is very helpful. In the case of nuclear war, all bets are off.
You have some great ideas. If you gain some assurance and comfort doing all of this, fine. That allows you to think about other important things for survival. For me, it's the 1800's with as many non electronic modern tools and equipment as I can get my hands on. Even with that, limiting what you have to how much you can carry is important. A lot of extra stuff can become a trap rather than a benefit.
In a short run, if you can protect your stuff, do it. It could actually give you an advantage. '-)
Hey JR...don't forget to store a few flashlights in your faraday cage. Modern day flashlights use LEDs which would fry in an EMP incident. Then along with the power bank you stored, be sure to protect the solar panels, which are susceptible to burn out in an EMP. 👍

our early warning system is a couple big dogs that let us know every time a leaf falls in the woods😁🙄
You mentioned boiling beans etc uses a lot of water.
The water you used to boil with doesn't need to be thrown out, it can be reused agsin and again to boil other food.

How about catching the steam from cooking.
"Fast Beans": lots of YT vids on pre-cooking your beans then dehydrating or freeze drying.
It can also be used to pour over pet food for added nutrients

To go along with the first aid supplies, I would recommend at least 2 thermometers. I keep a forehead thermometer in an emp bag. Also an O2 sensor and a blood pressure monitor.
Add old type under tonge or anal ( for baby) types.

I took a cardboard box. I bought for 6.99 a 4’x8’ piece of wall insulation. It has a metal aluminum on both the front and back and has 3/4 inches of foam in between. I removed one side of the metal sheet and cut to fit the box. Cheap and perfect. I then sealed the box in aluminum foil
Fun tip - pure paraffin oil has an indefinite shlef life
Wrapping aluminum foil around larger items is a double win as wrapping your item should be EMP proof but also should stay nice and fresh!
Direct contact with foul wont help. It still needs a non conductive middle layer
I saw an ad for a company called EMP Shield. They say the technology is used by the military and other industries. They have devices that protect your home, car, solar from CME, lightning and EMP. The car protection costs less than $400. I’m looking into it. Anyone heard of these?
Is the car just around the electrical & battery, but most all of cars today are full of electrical gadgets, sensors & controls.

The large transformers used in substations are capital expense items and not off-the-shelf items. They are built on demand and the lead time is typically measured in months, lots of months. In some cases, the lead time can be years. Power grid failures cascade and the power grid could be down for months after an EMP.
Years. Plus the huge infrastructure loss ( hv wires, generators. Oil, power plant fuel will be gone. Not in faraday cage but essential weapons ( knife, bow/ arrows, .22 rifle and pistol plus a bigger caliber. Silencer good if you dont wish to attract attention). Rest of advice in his farady cage video is great.
@@karlschulte9231 I agree the grid would likely be down for years; my comment regarding months is a best-case scenario. The last time I checked, the large transformers were typically budgeted in the utility companies’ 5 and 10 year plans. To your essential weapons list, I would add a shotgun.
I always have my peace maker with me but I always like to have a good knife on me just incase something goes wrong with it and I like having pepper spray just because many cases may only require pepper spray and it makes for much better clean up ya know.
I love my Berkey. I've saved water in old milk jugs that I can filter through my Berkey.

Watch those jugs, put them where the water won't cause damage, because sooner or later milk jugs leak. Mine are now standing in baking pans.

Good vid. Reiterating what was stated in this vid -- the best 'quick test' for a Faraday Cage's integrity is to set whatever it is you're wanting to protect in the cage and test it. If it is an emergency radio, then turn it on and put it in. After securing the lid (or whatever) and you CAN'T hear the radio, then it's probably working a bit. If you can't call your phone b/c it's in the cage, then it probably is protected. One thing's for sure: we don't know the extent of EMP damage. Not been tested at the 'society level' just yet. Depends on altitude, magnitude and your location. I'm retired, wife still working. Her office is crow-flying about three miles, maybe four. She has a GMRS radio at work, Faraday protected. Same at home. She has a 'walking home route' and a 'driving home route' already pre-planned. Phones down?--switch to GMRS. Yes, we have a family licence, but if the plop-plop hits the rotary oscillator, licences aren't going to mean much if you catch my drift.
Faraday Cage should be "grounded" ("earthed") so that any pulse signal goes direct to ground.

I am working on weaning myself off of using my freezer as much so I wouldn't lose so much food that was expensive. But most of the UK would be taken out. Those of us who need import medication are screwed anyway.
I DID lose all the meat and vegetables that I had in my freezer. I don't know what happened to it but the freezer just quit but I didn't know it. Now I have another freezer but only use it to collect enough meat to can. All of those vegetables from my garden last year (that I didn't can) were lost also.

You will need woodburning stoves, build camp fires,,, cast Iron pans, griddles, and Dutch ovens with Lids
Once you get enough water, food. & security the⁶n stacking gold & Silver are viable currency options. Don't forget stacking some artwork too. Art has always held its value in troubling times, plus a little touch of sophistication & beauty will be needed to restart after SHTF.
i bought a very small microwave for my mother and she never used it.....i have it now and put batteries & emergency radio in it.

I keep my key fobs in a small faraday cage. It looks like a small masculine jewelry box. I also try to protect my vehicle electronics.

I have a dual fuel lantern but I've never tried this ethanol gasoline crap in it. Wonder if ethanol effects those like it does small engine carburetors?
Probably not. Lanterns tend to use brass parts that don't corrode as much as the cheap pot metal used in small engine carburetors. Most replacement carburetors are coated against ethanol, solving that problem too.
I dont exactly have a laser security thing, but I do have a small build your own r2 d2 kit thing, one of the ways you could build it has a little sensor in it that makes it make noise whenever something passes it so I might experiment with that for the time being till I can get something better

I live in a Giant fareday Cage, a steel shed, and i have to have everything by my window to even get 2 bars of signal on my Hotspot or my cell phone.
If i move electronic things that require cellphone towers or TV towers into the middle of the room I don't have ANY Service whatsoever.
So my question is, does that mean my electronic every day devices are safe from an EMP?
I also don't have electricity since I am using Solar Panels and deep cycle Marine batteries as my electric source.
hi i have a question not sure if you know ?, if any electrical with a circuit board is going to be fried as the air is charged , unless it is inside some sort of faraday cage , how can you protect the electronics of a vehicle ecu just by adding an EMP bolt on device at the battery as the ecus are still open to atmosphere , it occured to me that a welding surge protector would do a similar thing on a car , any thoughts

I had stocked up on a bunch of children’s fever/pain relief and cold meds prime to the height of Covid.
It came in handy, not only for my grandkids, but I was able to give these out to my sick grandnephews and grandnieces as well as my neighbor’s little ones when theirs parentheses was unable to go to the store since the entire household had Covid or of course exposed to Covid

You'll be in the dark, literally, without news or instructions as to what to do or where to go. Local FM & AM will likely be offline if you are...

Add " mupericin" antibiotic cream/ paste. From Dr. More effective than triple stuff. Also lanocane cream for surface skin pain. Besides official wTer filters a couple bags of activated charcoal and floss for fish tank. Pre filter murky water to extemd life of other filters.

I can’t find answers to this question. How long after an emp is it safe to go outside and how long after an emp is it safe to take your electronics out of the faraday bag?
An EMP is not dangerous to our bodies. You can go out right away. We also won't know when it happens except for noticing that things stop working

I take it that even if a unit is off, it will still be effected by an EMP attack? I don't know that much about it, or how it actually works. But I would assume that if a circuit wasn't complete, the items wouldn't be in danger. I guess I'm incorrect.

Best option for an endless and usually safe water supply is to sink a hand pump well. As long as you don't live in a freeze zone.
one rare comment I read said that her grandparents had a well in their root cellar.
If you are going to build any sort of outbuilding having a well dug inside the footprint of the structure is a good solution. Especially if the building will be insulated and or kept above freezing.
