    agreed, great tips. The one I definitely agree with is "don't have expectations". I've had the best workaway experiences and my expectations were low so I was never disappointed!

      Did you have to buy the plane tickets when you went? How did you get around from the airport? I think that this is the scariest thing to think about getting from point a to b in a foreign country.

    thanks for this video. I just joined Workaway,Helpex and WWOOF UK andcam starting my first position next week. It's a little more complicated because I am bringing my dog along. (I couldn't bear to leave her behind) and also because I'm a bit older than most volunteers, but better late than never!

    Fantastic video guys! We're just digging in to the world of Workaway (just signed up!) and this is crazy helpful. We've signed up with Workway, but we see that you do Helpx as well? Should we do both to cast a wider net or has one site been more helpful to you? Thanks much!

    • @elizabethmackay9594
      @elizabethmackay9594 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Because We Camp Hey! What an honour to hear from you two. We love your channel. You're an inspiration!
      We use all three: Helpx, Workaway, various WWOOF countries (plus wwoof us + Hawaii). There are more of these work exchange sites starting up every day, but these are the ol' faithfuls. Helpx has been the most helpful to us - it has more hosts in more countries and has been around longer. It also provides much more variety in work placements. You'll find a lot of accommodation businesses and homestays on Workaway.
      However, we have plenty of volunteer friends that find Workaway more reliable. It's all relative. Both are very useful. We like to cast that wider net so we can be picky with hosts - the same way hosts can and should be picky with their helpers. I say subscribe to both! A couple Helpx account is only $20 and lasts 2 years.

    Hi! I would like to find out more about Patricia, the last host in the video, what what her volunteer work opportunity is about. could you direct me to where exactly I'd be able to find information about this particular opportunity and others similar to it?

  • @elpaco25
    @elpaco25 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Is money needed for this? I understand you are provided room and food in exchange for work, but sometimes you need cash on you for unexpected reasons. Has anyone ever found themselves in a situation were you had to use cash that you had brought with you. Or are there ways to work extra hours in exchange for small amounts of cash or extra benefits.
    Asking because I am a broke college student.

    • @707josh
      @707josh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      you should always have cash with you anywhere you go, but it's not required for what's provided. read the description of the hosts ad

    • @observer164
      @observer164 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Money and car, if you do not want to become a hostage to the conditions that you may find deplorable. A lot of hosts feed you garbage food inadequate in quality or quantity, while you are expected to do hard physical labor. At some places, where hosts were particularly stingy, we opted for buying our own food. And even if you have that extra money, but do not have your own transport, you may have to wait a week or longer until your hosts finds time to take you to a grocery store. Remember that you are invited with a sole purpose to cut the host's expenses on hired labor, not for any other reason. A lot depends on your own standards of living. If you are used to surviving under the bridge, you should be OK for most part.

    • @observer164
      @observer164 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can try it at 70 if you do not mind to play the part of a sycophant, are in good shape and enjoy physical work, or have some special trade skills, and would like a taste of what mass media calls a "human slave labor" in reference to Ukrainian refugees in EU. HelpX, Workaway are just alternative names for the same thing.

    • @giselleburningham3204
      @giselleburningham3204 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniela Rodriguez .....the experience, accomodation and food is free.. not all places have wifi. Travel to your host is your responsibility. You need your own funds for any extras.. some people do paid fruitpicking etc on route to build up funds. ( hard job)

    • @observer164
      @observer164 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you are an omnivore, you better have extra money for food in order to keep your strength. Some hosts choose to become "vegans" when volunteers visit, because meat is expensive in EU.

    I’ve noticed that most that are willing to take risks are young people, retirees, older folks don’t seem to take such a risks. Most of us would love to travel the world, but is it really feasible to do when you’ve gotten older in life and want to experience something more fulfilling in life before they leave this earth to another world… 🤔

    • @observer164
      @observer164 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "Risk" is the key word here. In addition, older people are used to a certain standard of living and have set ideas of how they and people in general should be treated. They may have hard time adapting to the need to suck up to their hosts, to match their hosts' political ideology while withholding their own, to being abused, or to watching other volunteers of family members around them being abused. A young volunteer, who was hosted in Peru, told me how she had to dodge plates of food and hot pans, which the father of the family threw at the other members when he was displeased with something. The volunteer, who was 18, was blaze about the whole thing. Her mother though was upset that she might have been seriously injured or killed. This is the reality that volunteers have to prepare themselves for if they want to live in an unfamiliar household in a different culture.
