Your sense of humor matches these lessons perfectly, you’re gifted! And patton for pattern, we US listeners totally get it @Love To Learn Drums! 😆❤

For those who are wondering, she is flourishing slightly the note that needs an accent. This is both a brilliant way to demonstrate what's going on AND a good way to learn it yourself

That Pretty Purdie cameo was fire! Songs using the Purdie halftime shuffle include Bonzo’s Fool In The Rain, Porcaro’s Rosanna, Purdie on Babylon Sister and Home At Last, Copeland’s Walking On The Moon and others. I’d enjoy seeing a dissection of Copeland’s version.

This is a great breakdown, wish I'd seen it when I had to learn the song ! I play the triplets 2-handed, but I cheat and keep my left on the snare, hitting the backbeat and ghosting the other strokes.

If you enjoyed playing this groove I urge you to check out The Disappointed by XTC. Pretty much the same groove as Black Velvet, but (assuming you're playing the two handed version) it switches hands. In the intro it accents the right hand, but immediately into the verse it switches to accenting the left hand, and keeps switching throughout the song.

One small correction for newbies, when you said the triplet replaces one note, that's sort of true here, because the triplet is in the space of a quarter note, but actually triplets are when you replace two notes with three, and the triplets here are 8th notes. This is why swung 8th notes are roughly the same as a triplet with the middle left out, and why you can swing an 8th note groove.
Just a minor clarification as it doesn't affect this lesson, but any newb learning from this will here 8th note triplets and think it means 16th, which is a very serious difference in terms of the skill level needed.
Great lesson otherwise tho, and also Arcarsenal by At the Drive in is another song that uses this beat, but a bit faster and much more obviously than this version, very handy for learning this, and going between this beat and a full triplet tom groove.

Awesome thank you for the break down. I have been telling drummers about this song for years. I have been mesmerized by this groove since it came out. The song would only be average without the amazing bass and drum groove

I'm so happy that you are sounding and looking so well.. don't give up, the commitment is key.. that ride cymbal is a stick breaker.. Ally influence comes from classical music,,, trying to Put percussion to Hilary Hahn violinist, solo for Patricia n.3..i don't know if you celebrate Thanksgiving in Australia but... it's a holiday worth celebrating 🦃

It's called 3 against 4. 3 notes per bar in one hand - 4 notes per bar in the other. You can practice it with your hands on your knees. And learn to do it with both hands.

I couldn't stand it when it first charted ( mu' age) but when TH-cam happened along and I really listened to it I thought the rhythm went a bit deeper too. That accent threw me and then getting the snare fill right at the end of the chorus bit as well!! Yet I could hammer out the "Everybody wants to rule the world" shuffle no worries! Crazy I tell ya 😅

It's a lot more complicated if you look at the live version of the song. Andersen keeps the triplet time with his left foot and hits only the accents with the right hand. Makes the time keeping difficult especially in front of audience...

I couldn't agree more, Black Velvet is deceptively difficult to play. I play it one-handed on the hi-hats, and to get those accents is hard, I've tried the two-handed method, but with no success. Regardless, it has a wonderful grinding, relentless groove, it's a great song. Thanks for the video.

Played this one on guitar in my band.. the drummer never played it right. And I knew it. But when I said something I’d get “you’re not a drummer”..wtf do you know?!! “ I knew..

@@williamb4652the band did yes.. but we did not have the FX part since we had no keyboards.. the bass player was multi talented and gave us his version instead. It worked. The drummer liked to go in the parking lot during breaks.. the songs started getting rushed if you know what I mean..

it’s one of those that people always play wrong, when doing a cover from the record.
It’s a killer groove, I play it two handed.
