Just finished a trip with 2019 Buick Enclave, from Allentown PA to Alexandria Bay NY, and back, over the holiday weekend, towing a travel trailer, 4800 pounds , pulled in Front wheel drive, using a anti sway bar and weight distribution, no problems at all, big hills doing 50-55( not to push, had plenty of power to go faster) , and rest of the way 65, tires on trailer only rated to that speed, average 12.6 miles per gallon...only used all wheel drive to get out the campground... Buick did well, I have CDL A ..

MPG wise, that’s a really draggy trailer. Gasoline engines tend to drop efficiency like a rock when you gotta make power continuously to overcome aerodynamic drag. Honestly not bad for working that 3.6 with 5k behind it. You realize you more than doubled the mass, and dramatically increased the drag.
Glad to hear the control was there. That’s the more important part of towing, and a lot of people fail to recognize that. They think if it has enough power to accelerate it can tow, but really, load control and hill descent control is far more critical.
Glad to see the time you took to set the trailer up properly. Weight distribution, hitch height, proper hookups. I see way too many yahoos on the road who just plopped a trailer on the hitch with zero setup and it’s dangerously out of whack going down the freeway. Thank you for showing it being done correctly. 👍
My wife and I are looking at the Enclave, and after seeing this I know it would haul our little utility trailer with a 2000-lb load of firewood just fine. If I need to tow bigger stuff it’s time to warm up the Silverado 2500HD Duramax, which is awesome when I need to hook up a 20-ft flatbed and haul the tractor in for service... but the truck is kinda overkill when I just have a 500 lb motorcycle in the 5x8 utility trailer. 😉

I own a 2014 Enclave, just turned 100K, absolutely love this rig. I just put new plugs in it because I noticed the mileage dropping from 26 on highway (at 75 no less) to 20 mpg. I’m going to tow a small RV roughy 3000 loaded, I’m expecting a good result and if I get 9-10 I’ll be satisfied I’d like more but I’m used to that mpg anyway towing with a pickup and larger trailers if I get more I’ll be pleased as would anybody. I don’t know how I feel about all the part time AWD stuff I’m thinking too much technology and I noticed an auto stop feature on the tachometer I’m definitely not a fan of that, as with any GM product I’ve ever owned I’ve never been disappointed.

Hello there Andre and Nathan! As usual another cool informative test. I’ve been towing long distances lately with my 2016 Colorado Z71,4x4, V6 Ext Cab. With a 4,000 lbs travel trailer and at least 1,000 lbs of two adults, two dogs and a lot of stuff, like 40 gals water, along with two gallon drinking and a case of bottled water. Soft drinks and food. I rolled over a Cat Scale at 9,540 lbs GCVW! With a full tank of gas. So far over the 4,700 miles, from Massachusetts to Central Florida, along the Florida Panhandle to Matagorda Bay RV Resort, and all over the areas we have been through. We have averaged around 15.4 mpg!!! At all the speed limits without cruise control, as that tends to let the trans hunt down to lower gears. Without the tow/haul mode, as I keep an eye in trans and engine temperatures, that never go higher than 170 trans and 190 engine temp. If I feather the gas pedal I do better at keeping the trans in a higher gear! With no shortage of power whatsoever! But I have to say since we entered to southern states it has been rather flat. So there is that. But still and averaged mileage of just over 15 mpg, figured at the total pump readings over a two week period is pretty good!

That's the weight of having 5 kids in the back of the car...it should easily be able to handle that. Now I need to find that tow bar, brake/light harness package. Not even sure how to search for that on the web. Suggestions?

I keep on trying to figure out what my V-6, 5,000 pound tow vehicle can really, honestly tow up I-80 to Reno for instance or 50 to Lake Tahoe. I am starting to think 4,000 is the real max, with a 2700 to 3200 pound trailer, 40 gallons of water and 200 pounds of food and gear but I am not even sure yet if that can get over a mountain pass.

We tow our (approx.) 7,000 lb. (fully loaded) travel trailer with our ‘16 VW Touareg. We’ve done around 15,000 miles in trips, so far, over two+ years... the rubber-neckers we get going down the highway, while originally were amusing, have become annoying. People just can’t believe it.
While up in Canada, we even took it off roading in deep trenches of mud and water, with the trailer in tow (for some off grid camping) for a couple miles, and she pulled like an absolute champ! Even better than one of the Ford F-150s, who had to be towed out by another F-150.
On our way home from Canada, to Kansas City, MO, I counted every trailer/RV that passed us, and every one we passed, setting the cruise at 65mph. We had 6 pass us, while we passed 14 for the entire trip home. Point to that is, we’re pulling just fine compared to what else is traveling out there.

Though, as a bicycle rider the effects of head or tail winds can greatly effect the energy needed to maintain a speed, more obviously hills do too. I wouldn't use this to tow regularly. I'm sure the engine can handle it but the rigidity of the unibody crossover is what has me concerned. I would use it for an occasional Uhaul trailer or a small boat but not something consistent as if it was my daily job like a few horses or a small Bobcat bulldozer. I would prefer a nice pickup truck for that.

We pulled a 5000 lb travel trailer with our 2010 Traverse with a tow package (same chassis/engine with a bit less hp). It towed ok in cool weather on flat roads, but heat absolutely killed its ability to tow with any confidence. It struggled like you wouldn't believe in the mountain passes of Montana in 90+ degree heat. Foot to the floor, revving out second gear, continually decelerating and overheating on the interstate was a terrible feeling. We took it easy on it after that trip after we discovered its vulnerabilities, and only pulled the trailer for shorter distances on relatively flat ground. Even so, it would start to overheat if the temperature broke 90 degrees. I would recommend no more than 3000-4000 lb towing for a unit like this unless you like your knuckles to be white while being passed by large trucks, hoping that the engine doesn't grenade..

I leased the same car for my wife, 2018 Enclave but not the AWD version just front wheel drive. But it does have the complete tow package. I have a camping trailer, roughly 28 feet and 7,000 pounds maybe a little more for longer camping trips. I tow it with a 2008 Cadillac Escalade EXT which obviously tows the camper with relative ease...70 MPH is a normal cruise speed with the camper loaded for a week long trip. Keeping in mind the bed of the Escalade EXT is loaded with crap as well. But I have been curious as to how my Enclave would tow. While I would not want to tow the camper on long trips but I wouldn't mind using the Enclave to just move the trailer from the storage to the house or in a pinch be able to use the Enclave to tow on a short trip should the Escalade be out of commission for whatever reason. Honestly I never thought this Enclave could come close to 5000 pounds capacity. I figured it was ok to tow a jet ski or small U-Haul trailer. I may hook the camper to the Enclave and drag it around the neighborhood just to see.....

Loved your video and explanations. One thing I was missing and am very confused by. Did this Enclave have the Factory Trailer Package. If so was that the reason you did NOT need and electric RV brake controller? Also I did not see sway control on the trailer. The manufacturer says that the Stabilitrak will take care of sway. Does that mean the car has everything needed? I recently purchased a 2021 Enclave Avenier to pull an Airstream 22FB with base weight of 4200# and max of 5000#. I need to know if I need to install an electric brake controller, no dealer seems to know what that is, and if I need anti sway kit on my hitch. Looking at the Recurve R3 hitch with weight distributions and sway control. If I dont need the sway control if the car takes care of that then it is much easier

You probably know this at this point, but for the benefit of others who may be reading this, you have to have the tow package to tow this much. Without it, capacity is only 1500 pounds. It does not have an integrated brake controller, and a stability system is no replacement for a weight distributing hitch. I have a Traverse and would not use it to tow that close to its limits on a regular basis.

When the vehicle squats with the trailer on, could you mention if it's easy to re-aim the headlights? This could be important for folks who tow frequently. ;)

depending on the trim level they have available intelibeam headlights that will move with the steering wheel

4000 rpm? Surprised it wasn't building a lot of heat. Not good on a hot day.

    • @savannahnehls8642
      @savannahnehls8642 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

My experience with the Chevy large crossovers as sustained high load in the heat has not been good. Even with the factory tow package (hd engine cooling), I have over heated brand new traverse/Arcadia rentals driving from LA to Vegas on the passes. That happens while not towing...

That cover for the trailer hitch is not theft proof. There should be a release switch inside the car in order to remove it. Or a button that senses proximity of the owners remote.

4k rpm do that enough you gonna lose more than mpg. Overtime you are going to wear it out. That V6 is overworked

Surprised at the difference in mpg from supposed combined. I would have anticipated it dropping to 15-18 mpg, but not from 25 to 10. I drove my F150 from Seattle to San Diego empty got 14 mpg (5.4L V8), then towed a car trailer and had a loaded bed from San Diego to Corpus Christie Texas and got 10.3 mpg.

Noticed you pulled through pump stations so that the trailer occupied a fill station. Was there room for you to stop vehicle at pump and leave trailer beyond? Aggravating when people block available pumps with trailers or occupy diesel pumps when getting gas, or sit in vehicle after filling to talk on phone, etc.

Chevy Fan it still would be the engine actually has to work harder in AWD lol if the tires were breaking traction the whole time then yes it would make a difference but having it in AWD would do anything but give it better milage

In Ontario Canada it's the law to have trailer brakes if the the loaded trailer is more 3081 lbs. or more then half the weight of the tow vehicle.

Towing 5k without trailer breaks would not only be illegal, but incredibly unsafe.
