    This is one of the best how to videos about digital manipulation in photography that I have seen. Precise, to the point and effective. Well done.

    Just found you...and so refreshing to have a calm, straightforward tutorial without all the loud voices, hip language and irritating background music...thank you so much! Please keep doing it your way!

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I think that editing tutorials need to be calm and concise to work well.😄👍

      I agree. Really easy to follow without a whole lot of distractions and an explanation of it all that usually takes up half the video. So concise and to the point!

    So instructive, lean & no-nonsense, just like other commentators here said. Let me add that I'm grateful you posted this in 2016, making it easy to follow even with my clunky old CS5 version (which I love). I cannot believe the pictures I just created with your help -- thank you so much!

    I've tried your technique and the results are amazing.... so much detail revealed, especially in the blue areas, which I didn't expect. I am in your debt sir.

    Could you do a video on a more authentic albumen? I like doing albumen prints, but they can get tedious to make sometimes.

    Simply learn the real process please.

      I agree with you for the reason that you simply can't really fake an original wet plate. Also the plate will be a unique piece of work with an incredible high resolution. But not everybody can or will afford the required camera, chemicals AND invest the time. I'm actually just waiting for the chemicals to arrive to get started, but I have no idea if I'll enjoy it enough to stick to it. Digital photography is convenient and post editing is also a skill you need to develop, but you don't have to deal with potentially dangerous chemicals. So I can understand if people prefer to fake the look than going for the real thing.
      Also based on your statement, I assume you do wet plates. Any suggestion on how to get the exposure right? I found basically all info I needed but nothing about how to get the exposure right without trial and error. And I dislike the idea of wasting a few plates for that.

    So now I have watched two videos of your technique and played with it. Great tutorials! Where did that particular texture come from? I don't normally use them so I have no files at hand.

    • @jamesabbottphoto

      Hi James, a search for free or royalty free texture will bring up loads of options:)

    terrible. wet plate isn't sensitive to red or green at all. blue and violet only. the highlights never get brighter than light grey and shadows are pitch black, not washed out.

    Another way to get the wet plate collodion effect is to shoot on an actual wet plate collodion plate

    • @jamesabbottphoto
      @jamesabbottphoto  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anime Studio Animation Very true. This is for people who don't want, or can't invest in all the equipment and chemicals required by the process. Not to mention all the knowledge and trial and error.

  • @nickfanzo

    Or you can do it for real. Which is way more beautiful. You can’t create the random black drips and tears of the real thing

  • @RodUSMC75

    Looks nothing like Wetplate. More like a fancy way to make a black and white. Anybody who know what Wetplate is could tell this is a 1000 miles off.

    • @jamesabbottphoto
      @jamesabbottphoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vocho Magnifico I disagree, it resembles a wet plate. To say it looks nothing like one is nonsense.

    • @RodUSMC75
      @RodUSMC75 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Abbott I actually shoot Wetplate and can say with experience this is nothing like Wetplate. Be it Ambrotype or Tintype this is no where near a Wetplate image.

    Too bad digital isn't photography no matter the degrees of fakery. "Data acquisition" is the proper name. BTW good job mate! Brilliant PS tutorial for those of us making $$$$ doing data acquisition based special efxs.

  • @jeffmyer5263
    @jeffmyer5263 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why? Learn how to do the real thing and stop faking something that takes a little skill!

    • @jamesabbottphoto
      @jamesabbottphoto  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Why not? It's just a bit of fun and an effect anyone can try. The wet plate process takes more than "a little skill", and the equipment, darkroom and chemicals required put a lot of people off. I had a wet plate portrait taken and one of the chemicals used in the process was cyanide. Not something everyone would want to store and handle.

    • @TheJACKCOLORADO
      @TheJACKCOLORADO 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is true James. I am sure this will be appealing to many people. But having an actual ambrotype or tintype in your hands and seeing the insane resolution is what really makes wet plate so unique.
      But bravo. I see nothing but positive from this if it makes others aware of wet plate

    • @jamesabbottphoto
      @jamesabbottphoto  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      John W. Browning I think that's a major part of it. Interest and curiosity can be a wonderful catalyst. I've sat for a portrait myself and it was a fantastic experience because of my interest in the process.

      if you're too scared to handle potassium cyanide you can replace it with sodium thiosulphate and still have 90% of the same fixing results. and yes this looks nothing like wet plate.
