@corneliusodonovan9691 I don't remember that but can believe it as (unfortunately) it was the paper my parents bought! I do remember the quizzes with plenty of Bond trivia though. Great to hear from you though - I hope you're doing all well since you moved up to Yorkshire! I still have a copy somewhere of your appearance on The Weakest Link because I love the way you dealt with Anne's questions!
@corneliusodonovan9691 I hadn't realised quite how extensive your secondary 'career' of quiz show contestant was until this - though I remember watching clips of you on 15 to 1 and other quizzes in school assemblies past. I always thought of you as the best teacher I had at school, and probably the resaon I'm still interested in mathematics - I recently took part in an attempt to calculate Pi by hand to a record number of decimal places - we got to 138 I think it was over 5 days effort, but great fun. Lovely to hear from you again after what must be nearly 25 years!
@ You’re very kind Chris - if you’re still interested in Mathematics then I can’t have done a bad job! Interesting to hear about your work on pi; I myself would have liked to have been involved in the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search but my IT skills are poor (I am more of a pencil and paper man myself).
My father was on several daytime shows, not really quizzy, but he was on countdown, two tribes, do the dishes, deal or no deal and countdown in the early 2000s. He mentioned there were a few that did the rounds on the smaller afternoon shows, as they already knew the way the shows were made. This meant they were quickly moved through, namely to ensure the shows were filmed as quickly as possible.
The 28 years later trailer shows how you can still follow the clip format but do something completely different. It's interesting how most trailers have pretty much followed the same format for many many years. What I really hate is those that have one of the actors telling us about the film and their part etc - it completely draws you away from whatever world the film is set in.
This series of Strictly reminded me Strictly is great for it inclusiveness of disabled people. And its audience showed how ignorant they are about disability. I love that when Chris won he reminded people that it’s the lack of support and opportunity that stops disabled people.
I didn’t say he won because of his blindness, nor did I indicate that it was where I thought the ignorance was. The ignorance lay it the utter shock that a blind person could learn to dance, that he could walk a few steps unaided, and that if disabled people don’t participate it’s because of disabled people’s unwillingness to try. That ignorance was also displayed in the way Tasha’s disability was constantly minimised or even erased, and in the way her disability was compared to Chris’. And that ignorance is not unconnected to a society that says nothing about a right wing media campaign to portray disabled people on benefits as fakers and scoungers, a society that is incredibly inaccessible and treats disabled people like an inconvenience.
Just wait until they get a wheelchair user on who can stand up for a short time during the routine!! As a wobbly person I’m all for this kind of representation, it shouldn’t just be Paralympic heroes that get to represent us.
Anybody is free to get any plastic surgery they can afford but what gets me is when they sell skin care creams and potions at extortionate prices. But then that is down to the stupidity of people buying their crap.
Mr O’Donovan was my maths teacher back in the early 90s. However a majority of maths classes used to ended up talking about how Arsenal had performed at the weekend. Apologies read someone else’s obituary with same name
Mine too - I was about to say it's sad to hear he had passed away, but I can't find any evidence of it online other than an obituary of someone similarly named in Birmingham (but the age doesn't match) - nice to see his name pop up! I remember him playing lots of his quiz show appearences in assemblies and talking about it in Maths lessons, and how he would take supporters of any team who beat Arsenal at a game out of the class for "a word" (I suspect just a chat about the game but not being into football I never knew!)
Membership wise, Goalhanger should consider a company wide program. I'm sure there are others like me who would subscribe to that, but if I was a member of each of your channels individually, it would be more than Netflix, for far less content. Plus, I already subscribe to TH-cam Premium.
My husband and I suspect that on team quiz shows, some teams are put together by the casting team rather than being an organic team who applied as a team. We do wonder whether these teams are pulled together from individuals from other shows. Usually it's teams that don't appear to know each other or have little chemistry. And at times we will recognise someone from another quiz show. Fun fact - we applied to be on Pointless and didn't make it past the telephone interview. Sad times
Only connect is transparent about how the teams are sometimes built because you can apply as a single. They had a special with some of those returning teams.
Always surprised when reminded about Marilyn Monroe's plastic surgery because she looks flawless in both pre-fame and post-fame shots. The procedures must have been quite subtle and very well executed.
I've done market research before for Movie trailers. They do workshop them. I had to fill out a load of questions about the trailer I watched and I have noticed the released trailer is sometimes different from the one I saw in the market research.
I heard that James Gunn had quite a bit to do with the new Superman teaser trailer and only one shot from that trailer will actually appear in the film. That trailer did a VERY good job of selling his new vision of Superman against all the Snyder supporters hating it before they'd even seen anything from it
There's definitely been contestants on both Pointless and The Chase. I don't think Richard was able to watch The Chase much for many years 😆 As long as you're honest about previous shows you've been on, I don't think there's an issue. There was one case where a woman was dropped from Deal Or No Deal after 3 shows after it was found she'd been on Golden Balls and won about £60k but not disclosed that. I've seen a few contestants pop up on numerous game shows - a guy called Dave Woolin has been on Deal Or No Deal, Tipping Point, The Boss and plenty more, while another guy called Dennis won £3k on Weakest Link then a few years later won 50p on Deal Or No Deal...
Question for a future episode please. In wrestling, there is a term 'Marty Jannetty' which is used to decribe the less successful half of a tag team when they separate. Is there a similar term in showbiz / entertainment for double acts / people who worked closely together where one of them has a career that stumbles after they separate ? Thanks very much 👍
BBC TV trailers are even worse than film trailers for giving away the cliffhanger resolution and other key moments of the upcoming episode. I've never understood why they don't just use the cliffhanger moment from the end of the *previous* episode as the hook to remind people to watch. The best TV trailers so far this year IMO are the Aardman promos for The Traitors, especially the one with Feathers McGraw in it.
I'd like to know what diet 47 year old Stephen Mulhern is on that prevents his hair from greying. I started to go grey early 20's. Also what exercise does he do that prevents his brow from showing a single furrow. Also what hold does he have over producers that make him first choice for every other programme ?
Friends of mine appeared on Pointless as a couple, within two years of him doing Tipping Point and her doing The Chase. So it clearly happens. I think they won on all three too!
I remember a while ago (could have been about 5 years or so) that over a period of just a few weeks, the same guy turned upon several quizzes/game shows , at the very least Pointless, The Chase, Impossible, Tipping Point and a couple of others. He was very "spottable" (I don't recall why, but I think he was in a wheelchair) so it seemed especially egregious. I did wonder at the time if all the production teams had got together to enable it as some kind of "make a wish" thing - certainly at the time of completing the forms he could have honestly said he'd not been on a TV quiz before as he presumably applied for all the same time , but the effect was very jarring
Strictly is only still on TV because it’s seen as a cash cow. I’m waiting for next season to be launched as a full AI version where the viewing audience define the avatars
So, as someone who doesn't watch Strictly come dancing, I watched this video twice and still have no idea what was the scandal that needed to be put out. Apparently someone called Chris won the dancing competition and that caused some kind of crisis. I thought Richard was good with establishing narrative...
The scandal was nothing to do with Chris, it was a female contestant, from a earlier series, had accused her partner of treating her badly, so Chris coming into it was so great , it more or less got forgotten.
I think Rachel Neiman has been on at least University Challenge, Mastermind and Pointless. She is a very good quizzer, but I suspect the fact that she is blind pushes her up the list.
If you look back, lots of times the best dancer did not win, its the personality we take to. But to be honest Chris proved himself, he had the best male celebrity footwork.
The problem with Nicole Kidman is that her surgery looks unnatural. I find my brain distracted by her facial features so I lose focus on what character she is playing.
Wait until you see Kate Beckinsale. She uploaded then took down a video earlier this week about the "It Ends With Us" fallout and stuff she'd experienced onset, and it looked like a stranger using her name. Don't know if it's cosmetic work and/or a filter, but it looked like a different person.
It’s an old tired format that needs resting for a few years. Once it would be THE topic of conversation on a Monday morning, now hardly anyone I know watches it any more and the few who do, do so only sporadically or in the background.
I enjoy the rest is entertainment. The question "Has strictly saved itself? " prompts the reply; as when asked regarding the health of eg farage or Trump, "Who cares?"
Your podcast is very interesting even though my taste is often totally different to yours. My pet peeve is shows where the audience can vote before seeing all of the contestants. This makes the show even more of a popularity contest and less about the performance. I know why it is done but I can't stand it.
