@@ProfessorofRock she also sang a duet with Jack Wagner on his 3rd album, "Don't Give Up Your Day Job" called "Its What You Don't Say". Yes, I had every Jack Wagner album. Phenomenal singer/songwriter! She toured with MJ. She also sang with him on "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" as well one of my favourite songs. The latter song has a instrumental piano version by David Benoit. Seidah Garrett had a CD out in 1988 that was very good, but got little airplay.
I remember being in awe when Michael performed this song at I believe it was the 1988 Grammy Awards and he had the whole audience up on their feet. I was in tears watching him perform while perched in front of the TV. Truly one of the best songs of the '80s in my opinion. I remember being upset when it was knocked out of number one by "Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car" by Billy Ocean, but I love that song, too, so all is good.
Siedah Garrett was never huge but she was an awesome collaborator and a very very talented artist. Very overlooked, even back in her prime. MJ is a quandary because he was such a massive, well known force and almost whatever there is to know about him is common knowledge to those who learn about him over the years. However, it's still nice to see him sorta get an episode on here because any person with common sense knows he was extremely talented and synonymous with 20th century music. You absolutely cannot discuss music of the rock era without talking about MJ at some point so thanks for putting this one out.
I was not a Michael Jackson fan but I can't deny the artistry behind his songs and how well crafted they were. Quincy Jones definitely collaborated with the right people and created some magic with Michael. Awesome interview and fantastic video! Thanks Adam!
I agree. Also not a fan, even in his heyday before the 'troubles'. However, there were some great songs, with some great artists behind them, as this video shows. I just wish somebody else had sang them and cut out all the gimmicky noises. The only one I truly liked with him was Billie Jean and that was partly because of the video.
@@Elwaves2925 as you said, “some”… but most of the HUGE MJ’s solo discography consists of his own writing, lyrics and music (yeah even Billie Jean, the one song Quincy Jones himself DIDN’T want to put into Thriller album at all, until much much later, just because Michael kept insisting) If his style doesn’t suite you that’s ok I guess but he was a complete, masterful artist on his own. Lately people has been trying to diminish his genius by crediting it exclusively to collaborations he did, but he was definitely and absolutely gifted musician and artist by his own means since he was four. And the “troubles” were basically the only deceitful and perverse way the industry could get him out of their path, he was revealing way too much of the dirty people in the industry starting with Tommy Mottola, Sony and the way companies like those scam their own artists making them almost their slaves.
@@s0me0ne1se You seem to have lumped me in with a group of other people, please don't. I didn't go against any of the points in the early part of your reply. Also, and this wasn't intended as part of my original comment, it's an objective fact that the vast majority of songs are created through collaborations. Even if an artist provides lyrics, music and more, most instruments are played by others, engineers and producers can also be involved. Jackson's output wasn't a 'solo' as you seem to claim. You 'guess' it's okay that I have a different opinion. Wow. As for your latter points about his 'troubles', that's some real blind fanboy BS right there. Unless you are referring to different troubles than I was, but I didn't want to bring it all up here, out of respect for Adam and the positive tone he clearly tries to maintain on this channel. Hence why I settled on calling it all 'troubles'. Save yourself the effort of replying if you wish, I'm not interested in what you have to say but I genuinely wish you a good day. :-)
@@s0me0ne1se He also didn’t want smooth criminal on Bad. Apparently, he didn’t think much of it ! Q gets way too much credit for his work on the 3 Albums. For sure he had a huge contribution in terms bringing in the people best in the business (Rod Temperton, Bruce Swedien, Ed Van Halen, Steve Procaro, Steve Stevens and so on) and production work (which was his job) but less when it came to creating the songs. Billie Jean, Beat it, WBSS we’re all pretty much created before they were bought to Q. With regards to Bad, pretty much everything except for MITM was Mike’s creations. Of course he had help from the likes of Greg Phillinganes and Bill Bottrell, But Q wasn’t part of it.
Man in the Mirror is one of my favorite M.J. songs. It reminds me of the scripture at James 1:22-24 "become doers of the word and not just hearers. If anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, this is like a man looking at his own face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and immediately forgets what sort of person he is. The song has a good message, "Be the change that you wish to see in the world " Mahatma Gandhi. Thanks for the interview. I knew that she wrote this song because I read The liner notes. It is my favorite song on the Bad album.
I was 30 years old when this song came out. I had never really listened to Michael Jackson until I heard Man in the Mirror. I have been listening to Michael every since. This tune was a game changer. Siedah and Glen deserves everything they get from this tune. Truly a work of divined intervention Art.
I turned five in early ‘88 and have clear memories of this song being everywhere. MJ was the biggest star and my favorite artist in the world for the next 4 years or so, when I discovered and delved deeply into rock. This song was, remains, and always will be a very special one, striking at the emotional core that only the best ones can reach.
How can anyone not immediately love her?!! She is one of those precious gifts and American treasures. 'Man In The Mirror' is one of only 3-4 songs that actually make my eyes sweat and that lump in the throat
After living through Thriller, and Bad, this song hit me like the hammer of Thor! Man, it had that impact, so intense. The intensity was heightened with the stark absence of heavy arrangements....it was the first time I'm hearing Michael's voice stripped down like that. And that 1988 Grammy awards performance that came along ......and the standing ovation that followed....I can tell you, that day, the world was floored! Michael ruled.
@@williamwilkinson8735 When you see him in heaven, you'll know the Truth. Don't believe the lies born of envy. Michael Jackson was certainly a fallible and breakable human being, but he was no predator.
@@williamwilkinson8735 it's so lame and sad, when people so blindly believe a media hoax... I always get choked up when it comes to Michael Jackson. It is still very hard to accept his passing. Was always a HUGE fan of his and his music ❤ I love how you can see the sparkle in her eyes when she speaks of him and her experience of this masterpiece with him. She is very proud of this gem as she should be because she created something that will go down in history. Beautiful voice, beautiful woman. immensely talented. I loved her tribute song she made for MJ several years back. The song was called 'Keep On Loving You'.
I was seven years old when Michael came out with *Bad.* I definitely considered "Man in the Mirror" a cornerstone of the album. At that age, I wasn't paying attention to who wrote what, because it was always about how beautiful and impacting the music itself was. Michael always made it his own. This interview hits the spot. I always wondered what Ms Garrett is like on camera. Ken Burns should consider hiring her to commentate his documentaries.
And this is a great interview. I really enjoy your interviews with these incredibly talented people about the artistic process. It's a window into an entirely different existence.
Loved the insight into such a historic event. Amazingly talented writers and producers doing their best to make an immensely talented performer even better. The king of pop had an amazing court to surround him! RIP Michael.
Thank you so much for this. I was a senior in high school when this song came out. I was already a huge fan of Michael since Thriller, but THAT song at THAT time in my life, when I was full of hope and expectations for the future, really energized me and made me feel like I had the power to do just about anything I wanted.
I was 13 and loved watching Michael Jackson’s videos on Much Music, more than any other artist. Man in the Mirror had my heart right away. I couldn’t get over how such a true and powerful message was expressed is such a beautiful way. This song still gets to me… and to this day, Man in the Mirror makes my playlists 🎶💖. "Man in the Mirror" is definitely one of MJ's Ten Best songs - I remember our school principal sharing that song and its music video with us at one point to motivate us. Very profound!
A brilliantly written song that begs us to ask ourselves are "we" doing our part in helping the world be a better place. It's so darn powerful, inspirational, and beautiful!!❤ Loved and respected Michael so much! Thank you professor for this wonderful interview.
I remember being12 years old when this out...it was huge. I loved it. It was a defining album. My favourites were the way you make me feel and smooth criminal. Quite far apart terms of tone. Loved MJ. So sad he's gone. Bless that man x
While Bad is not my favorite Michael Jackson album (I prefer Off The Wall and Thriller), Man In The Mirror is my favorite song from the Bad album. Great song with one of the most inspirational lyrics that are timeless and still resonates today.
I was lucky enough to see the Bad Tour in Pittsburgh Sept 1988. This song was the most memorable performance of the concert. I would say this is one of my favorite songs of MJs. It def has stood the test of time and its meaning!
"Man in the Mirror" has always been my favorite Michael Jackson song. The second is "You Are Not Alone". "Man in the Mirror" inspires me and I cry when I hear "You Are Not Alone" because I remember loved ones who have passed out of my life. Michael's voice always brings me back into a good mood and memories of past loves.
I was blessed to see Michael Jackson on both his bad and dangerous tours. He was the most memorizing performer I have ever seen in my life and i believe he really had a heart for his fans and really could see how there world was using him and destroying the world we live in for pure profit and gain he was the man in the mirror and I think he was overwhelmed by the love of his fans I love how she said he respect me and my talent just like i respect his talent
Was only watching siedah Garrett last night lol. She was performing on a talk show with wang chung, singing everybody have fun tonight. It's on TH-cam. It was a great performance from her and the band. They sounded fantastic live.
That was super fun to watch! Funny, I've been listening to Wang Chung a lot lately, particularly To Live and Die in LA (I missed out on it in childhood, sadly), and it was all because of The Professor's videos about them and that song. I also finally heard the "Can you tell me what a Wang Chung is?" Line for the first time in Everybody Have Fun Tonight.
@@alliswede42 I only found the song because of the 80s set movie "take me home tonight" (awesome movie by the way. It's on TH-cam). The song wasn't really a hit here in the uk, so that's probably how I missed it first time around.
I wasn't a Michael Jackson huge fan. He was part of the fabric of my life and the radio growing up and of course I had the Thriller album. But he sort of became such a caricature towards the end of his life. Wasn't until after he was gone I realized what a shining light he had been in the world of music and how terrific all of his songs really were. I saw him in concert and well, people with that kind of charisma just don't come along very often. He was special.
He had a way with his audience. Any audience. I love all his records. The HIStory album is always one of my faves; an album that was so full of anger and cries for help. But the BAD album was killer too.
Adam, PoT, @professor of rock, every single time I hear this song it makes me stop & and want to evaluate things (which is usually a good thing. I "like" many of MJ's songs but this one I love, for the message it brings. Thank you for this interview, she's got a way with words & I'm so glad MJ picked this. ❤️
I sometimes wonder if people realize how truly Great an artist we lost when Micheal passed??? Very very few people Change the world or even just pop culture but he changed both. Great song!!
This is one of my very favorite interviews!! It seemed like you both had such an amazing give and take.. it was really a thing of beauty to watch. Such an inspiration to listen to her speak.. made me wish she was my friend
Cool story, great song!! .. I was actually at my buddy's wedding in Chicago when we heard Michael had passed away.. at the after party bar, they played this song and about 500 ppl at this giant bat sang at the top of their lungs in his honor this absolute classic, it was electric & incredible. MJ was my 1st concert as a 6yr old in 1983, still have 2 shirts from the show.
SO GLAD that you featured Siedah! And her solo album is absolutely terrific, too-"K.I.S.S.I.N.G." is a killer track, and her collaboration with Babyface, "Refuse to be Loose," is killer.
When a major artist dropped a new single back then, you could (with some accuracy) predict when your local station would play it again. I have clear memory of being 6 or so, playing with friends outside, and dropping everything when I knew I could run in and tape "Man in the Mirror" off of our top 40 station.
This song helped me work out and through some seriously messed up issues in my young adolescent life. The live version of MJ taking it to church at the Grammys is one of my all time favorites!!!! 🤗❤✌🏼🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
"Man in the Mirror" will forever be inspiring. I don't think a person has to be a real fan of Jackson in order to appreciate his songs and work, including this classic. I like it when he sang it live at Wembley Stadium in 1988, I think. I think the full concert is on his TH-cam channel.
I went to see Michael's Dangerous Tour at Wembley Stadium on my 13th Birthday, the way Man in the Mirror was staged truly blew my mind, a Jet pack, dancers. then my children got to discover it through Lego Batman which meant I could share that performance with them.
Amazing song, Michael's vocal control in this song is incredible, one of the best there is. You always deliver quality content Prof. One thing that bugged me from this video, probably a mistake by Siedah but she mentions in the beginning that other guys already knew Michael from History Tour when in reality History tour happened during the 90s and these were the 80s. Just something that as Michael's fan I couldn't help but notice!

"Man in the Mirror" is a song by the American singer-songwriter Michael Jackson. It was written by Glen Ballard and Siedah Garrett and produced by Quincy Jones. Quincy Jones was the man behind Michael Jackson's success. He wrote nearly every song for three straight albums for Michael Jackson, Every song from, "Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad." Michael Jackson was a good vocalist and dancer, but he wasn't a song writer, Michael would add grunts and moans, or change a word here and there, then take credit as a co writer, but he never wrote any songs. The album Thriller out sold every album because after the sales slowed way down, There was a huge warehouse full of the album Thriller. They had so many albums that they didn't even know what to do with them. So Michael Jackson lowered those prices on those warehouse albums, and then he bought them all for pennies an album, running up the record sales and pushing his own album up to that best, or most sold album of all time. Another thing Michael did, He paid M-TV to call or refer to him as the King of Pop. That was a tittle that Michael Jackson came up for himself. He was very successful, there's no doubt about that, But he wasn't really the King of pop music. If I was to call someone the king of pop music, I'd have to give that tittle to Elton John. Elton, like Michael had 29 number one hits, but Elton also had 15 number one albums, Michael only had 8 number one albums. Both of these men used song writers to boost their careers, but Elton John did write songs that hit number one, Michael Jackson Never Wrote a Number one Hit in his entire life. In fact, I doubt that he ever wrote a single song. But Elvis never wrote a single song in his life and He's got the tittle as the king of rock, and with 66 number one hits, I would say that he is. Unless someone was going to name a band as the king of rock, then that tittle has to go to the Beatles. I love this channel. I've been a musician for many years, and this is by far one of the best, if not the best music show that I've ever seen. Thank you..Peace..
If I'm not mistaken, "Man In The Mirror" was the biggest hit from the "Bad" album. Funny that it was the 4th single from the album, and not the first. But in 1988, several albums had the highest charting single as the 4th single (those include "Hold On To The Nights," the 4th single from the self-titled "Richard Marx" album, "Foolish Beat," the 4th single from Debbie Gibson's "Out Of The Blue" album, "Seasons Change," the 4th single from the "Exposed" album by Expose, and "Anything For You," from the "Set It Loose" album by Gloria Estefan & the Miami Sound Machine). Go figure! ☺
That was an amazing experience to listen to how a song is written , chosen, and performed by the sing writer and the 'star' . But how about interviewing the backing singers to the stars, because some of their stories would surely out class the 'star's' stories. There was a film done called 20 feet behind, and it was about the backing singers, like Darnelle Williams who was part of the mad bad Phil Spectors women's groups whim he shafted royally. I reckon it would be interesting because sometimes the backing singers had the better tonality in their voices for a specific song. Your shows are amazing and heart warming and inspirational, mixed in with personal memories and experiences with hearing the tracks for thee first time on your own. Or being with your late father and him playing it for you, and explaining what the song meant to him, which now has the same message to you that you are trying to pass onto your children. Tha no you for your shows they're helping me through a tough time, as I lost my father and one of his surviving brothers this year roughly 4 weeks apart. I never got to see my father as we lost connection with each other after my mother died in 03, and going through my own life threatening scare in 07. Am in remission, but it bubbles under the surface daily. But thank you again. Bon chance Mon ami.
Excellent video, and great to hear insights from an insider like Siedah! It's an amazing song and vocal delivery, although I personally wouldn't put it in the greatest vocal performance ever conversation. Off the top of my head, my top four would probably be the following (and may be good future segments by you if you haven't done them already): 1. Queen - The Show Must Go On: the final song from the final album by Queen. Freddie sang that one from his wheelchair, knowing that he'd 'soon be turning round the corner, now'. It's an amazing song to begin with, but when you add FM's vocals, especially in the bridge, that takes it to another level. 2. Carpenters - Trying to Get The Feeling Again: Nobody does heartbreak like Karen Carpenter, and here she uses her lower register and pure tone to deliver it in spades. This was actually an outtake that was left off of Horizon, but destroys the Manilow version. According to Richard Carpenter, it's a guide vocal from Karen that was done in a single take (you can actually hear Karen flipping through the lyric page about a minute into the song). You should interview Richard Carpenter one day! 3. Whitney Houston - One Moment in Time: The official anthem of the 1988 Seoul Olympics. What can you say? If this vocal by Whitney Houston doesn't inpsire you, nothing will. 4. Boston - More than a Feeling: Anything Brad Delp sang was amazing. "Hollyann" is another one where he sings so honestly and gets up their in the heights. Thanks again for a great clip!
Wow, I owned the "Bad" album in cassette tape and I didn't know Siedah Garret sang duet on "Man in the Mirror". I know her, but from another totally different album. She sang duet on "Long As We Believe" from the "Fast Forward" movie soundtrack which I also owned on cassette. I remember that song getting a lot of airplay on the local FM stations back then and it is what I associate her name with up to this day. It's a great song to which I still know the lyrics of even today.
I was 8 in 1988, and was very much into songs like "Dirty Diana" and "Smooth Criminal", and I didn't really appreciate "Man in the Mirror" then. As an adult, I love it and pop just as much as those two songs. The outro is one of the best outros in all of music. Michael has a great catalog, but I'm a Bad guy, and that's the album I still listen to today. I love the late 80's more than any other time period in music. If you're in Vegas, you must go see the Cirque show One at Mandalay Bay. It's amazing. Cheers!
A few years back, I worked with a fella that told me that this song came about because Michael was dabbling in Aleister Crowley magic and saw a man in his mirror. Or something like that.
For me, the songs meaning has always been clear. However, I wasn’t a big fan of the song when originally released but, rather, grew closer to it while explaining various qualities of the song to a much younger person who I felt didn’t take it as seriously as it deserved to be. While doing this I remember that I wound up focussing deeply on the words "Stand and deliver!" I was impressed with the clever turning of the phrase from its original intent - a demand issued in the process of taking from others during a robbery - now converted to an appeal to give of yourself! The kid hadn’t been aware of the origins of the phrase. Pointing it out elevated their perspective regarding the brilliance of the writing.

Great observation. Thank you!
J
My 7-year old son with autism loves Michael Jackson and especially this song. I am going to show him this video when he gets home from school.
Man in the mirror, my favourite MJ song. Wow! She's super brilliant and a lovely lady.
I adored Michael Jackson and his music. America would be much more united if MJ was still here.
@ Geronimo's Bones ...I seriously doubt that .....the guy should have been in jail .....
He collected adult hetero porn, over 1400 issues were found in his possession, yet you believe he was into young guys? Sure. Men interested in male kids always collect Playboy and Hustler. That's how we know what they are... Well, no.
Along with the most talented and special human being ever One of the only few who ever walked on this planet. 😊
Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for this. I was a senior in high school when this song came out. I was already a huge fan of Michael since Thriller, but THAT song at THAT time in my life, when I was full of hope and expectations for the future, really energized me and made me feel like I had the power to do just about anything I wanted.
All-time favorite MJ song. So powerful.
Loved this interview! Thank you 😊
You always have great content. Thank you so much for the time you put into this channel.
One of my All Time Favourite Songs. I've always known he didn't write it, but never really knew who did other than a name. Thanks Adam for introducing us to the lady that wrote the song.
THANK YOU SIEDAH GARRETT for such an incredibly beautiful and very meaningful song. You wrote a classic. A song that has and always will have meaning throughout the rest of time.

I loved and still Love Michael Jackson and Siehdah and Man in the Mirror . Loved this
This song gives me chills every time I hear it. What a great interview. The video was amazing too.
What a beautiful lady with such an amazing gift for song writing. Excellent interview Professor.
Thanks for listening
"Man in the Mirror" has always been my favorite Michael Jackson song. The second is "You Are Not Alone". "Man in the Mirror" inspires me and I cry when I hear "You Are Not Alone" because I remember loved ones who have passed out of my life. Michael's voice always brings me back into a good mood and memories of past loves.
Thank you for sharing!! It's awesome to see who actually writes the hits. Love the song.
Great interview! Once again!! Thank you!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Was only watching siedah Garrett last night lol.
She was performing on a talk show with wang chung, singing everybody have fun tonight.
It's on TH-cam. It was a great performance from her and the band. They sounded fantastic live.
Really? I'll try to track that down. Can you share the link?

Miss you

@Lee Odie .....no we don't miss you Wacko Jacko
This is arguably the FINEST song Michael ever recorded. 💿
Nope,that would be "Ben":-)

@Anna Trail, Good Girl! 👌
She mentioned Glen Ballard! That’s the guy who co-wrote Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill album!
Exactly!
100 years from now this inspiring song and performance will still be meaningful and listened too. What a great songwriter and vocalist Siedah is!

I sometimes wonder if people realize how truly Great an artist we lost when Micheal passed??? Very very few people Change the world or even just pop culture but he changed both. Great song!!
She is wonderful and fascinating. Thank you for posting your interview!
This is one of my very favorite interviews!! It seemed like you both had such an amazing give and take.. it was really a thing of beauty to watch. Such an inspiration to listen to her speak.. made me wish she was my friend
It's always been my favorite of his songs.
FANTASTIC EPISODE!!! What a treasure this channel is.
What a great interview. She is a sweetheart. And I love the random way rewards come.
SO GLAD that you featured Siedah! And her solo album is absolutely terrific, too-"K.I.S.S.I.N.G." is a killer track, and her collaboration with Babyface, "Refuse to be Loose," is killer.
Most amazing PoR I've seen so far, but I'm still catching up. I'm watching every episode, this is incredible.
What an amazing interview! Loved it!! Man in the mirror is one of the greatest songs of all time!
Great interview Adam.... you're the best man
Thank you for this episodes interview & the insight on the creation of this timeless, immeasurably inspiring & beautiful song.

The song meant change for my life . Making new moves for my destiny. Great interview with Miss Garrett. Appreciate the content.
"Man in the Mirror" will forever be inspiring. I don't think a person has to be a real fan of Jackson in order to appreciate his songs and work, including this classic.
I like it when he sang it live at Wembley Stadium in 1988, I think. I think the full concert is on his TH-cam channel.
Great point. Thank you for your continued support! You're the best.
@Anna Trail Yes ma'am! I hope that you are well, sister.
Amazing song, deep lyrics! Total package!
This is my favorite interview you have done, thank you
I went to see Michael's Dangerous Tour at Wembley Stadium on my 13th Birthday, the way Man in the Mirror was staged truly blew my mind, a Jet pack, dancers. then my children got to discover it through Lego Batman which meant I could share that performance with them.
I work not far from the jacksons childhood home which is a landmark now ! and a really nice mural painted on the side of a building in downtown gary
Great interview!! One of your best!
MAN o MAN😳..... WOW😲.!!...JUST that bit... brings rememberance of ALL the Great uplifting and passionate music Mike and his family created for us for🤔...about 5 Decades !!! 😳... Prolific quality musical productions and performances are just in unbelievable.. in the 70s we had Super freaks, Mike (and his family's) talent was like freaking Aliens😂 to do what they did 😂without modern technology !!!😳☺️...such dedication to talent and hard work for the end product of music and musical performance WOW 🤙☺️!
Very informative, Professor
Great job man.
Off the top of my head, my top four would probably be the following (and may be good future segments by you if you haven't done them already):
This is such a great song and a wonderful talented songwriter!
💜 Michael 💜
Goosebumps Professor.
Goosebumps. Wow.
Thanks for watching Anthony!
Cheers!
I've heard as much. Thanks for the recommendation.
Man I feel soooo bad for people who didn’t get to live in a world where Michael was the greatest artist on the planet.
A few years back, I worked with a fella that told me that this song came about because Michael was dabbling in Aleister Crowley magic and saw a man in his mirror. Or something like that.
The sequel, Keep the Faith, by Michael Jackson is very inspirational!
Great stories. This is the time when I really looked forward to turning on the radio and hearing the songs being played
Same.
What an amazing song and beautiful woman/writer.
Agreed! Thanks for watching.
Siedah Garrett is an engaging conversationalist.
I was just a little girl when this beautiful song came out
Great interview! Have you ever spoken with Glen Ballard? Would love to hear Alanis stories.
