Either it’s the context of this song being played, the ending of the anime movie, or just the sheer nostalgia from watching this as a kid, but this song makes me feel like crying. Such a beautiful song from a beautiful movie that was the first to bring the world of Mario from the games to animation.
Mario be a good hero :) He didn't save Peach from greed...but out of love...he went far and beyond to save her from the clutches of Bowser and his minions! and even in the end where he doesn't get her...he still gladly accepts it...because he is happy knowing Peach is happy...god dammit Mario...stop being such a good hero... Mario has kept saving her from Bowser after all these years...yet does he ever really complain?...no...he doesn't...people say he does...and joke about it...but in reality...Mario does it because he enjoys doing the right thing! he is a proper hero! TAKE NOTES YALL!!!
The ending to this movie was quite sad for being such an old anime and based on the Mario-franchise of all things, it is quite amazing the way they managed to put together the story without beating on the characters. Especially the way the way they handled Bowser is quite good considering that none of the characters in the older games are speaking at all. And the music is just breathtaking for an anime this old, just listen.

You know what really makes me feel like this wasn't the originally intended ending? In Japanese, besides Haru barely saying anything in that last scene when they're saying goodbye, Peach says very specifically that she will be lonely without Mario being there. (For those who don't know, 寂しい sabishii can mean sad, but it has a connotation of a feeling of being lonely). And yet Haru is there. (This isn't just advertisement, but I made a video on my channel for those who wanted a somewhat happier ending.)

In the end, Mario actually got Peach. But in Super Mario 64, he found the pipe again and came back. And to this day, he has met a lot of individuals in the Mushroom Kingdom and still loves Peach, and he, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and the Toads still go on adventures until Nintendo's bankruptcy.
