    Absolutely loved this video and it's really nice you took the time to put the importance of time in context. (that heartbeat thing was deep!)
    I've been trying to incorporate time blocks for very long and this video has given me solid way to implement it. Time audit was the missing piece, I have to know where my times going before I can try to change it.
    and deep work was a big changer for me as well. I'd also recommend the productivity project by Chris Bailey, it's a great book.

    Jake, you are very down-to-earth teacher. I have a lot of work to do when I get back from my day job. However, i am rather stressed out by the things to do than rather utilize that to work on the actual work. Your take on 'Brain Power' has made me more cognitive of my behavioral pattern. Thanks, Jake. Love your work!

    I am VERY ADHD, so having a timer helps me. I usually use a 20 min interval to help me break down large tasks. 20 min and switch!

    I recently started a TH-cam channel and spending more time drawing so this video will be very helpful. Thank you! Some contributions: there is an app called Cold Turkey that blocks all distractions for a set amount of time, very useful if you need to use the browser while working. Also, for me, having a movie (that I previously watched) playing while I'm working makes me very productive! For some people it may be distracting but it's worth a shot.

    This is so good, Jake. Something to watch on a regular basis as a great reminder. Thanks for sharing. One thing I did which helps me was to hang a project whiteboard next to my painting table. Instead of writing on the board, I cut mat board into several 2" x 8" strips and covered them on all sides with packing tape, then put a strip of adhesive craft magnet on the back. With a dry erase marker, I can write project name, current task, due dates or other relevant project info on the mini boards, but more importantly, I can easily move them around in the stack as priorities change. Being able to SEE all the work I need to be focused on makes sure I don't just tune it out when things seem overwhelming and helps me visualize better what needs attention. Being able to move things around means no tedious re-writing of stuff on the board when there are a lot of priority shifts. Once a project is delivered, I erase the mini board and it's ready to be used for another project.

    I used to over estimate the time i spent drawing because i didn't account for small things like going to the bathroom or eating or whatever else people do to keep living. So i started using a timer. i would set the timer for 8 hours every day and only let the time run while i draw. Since im a digital artist i used a google timer, i would just keep it open on a separate tab. You would not believe how little time you actually spend drawing when you start documenting it. Its increased my productivity since i can visually see how much i've draw and how much more i should draw on a daily basis. I recently switched it to a weekly timer. 30hours a week of drawing is all i can do since i work full time.

    Honestly, my time management for doing my art is a train wreck! Some of it is because of my work schedule. I have a full time job 30 minutes from home. Some of it is because of other personally reasons. I am recently divorced and have 2 boys. An 11 year old and 9 year old. When they are with me (every other week) I focus on them. I still do some drawing, and it's one of the thinks that my 9 year of connect on. He loves to draw, so I try and nurture that in him. And it gives me another reason to draw too. I definitely need to do a time audit. Thanks for the great advise. I plan on taking ti to heart. Looking forward to your next video.

    I love this so much. I subscribed before the video was over. I do have some tricks; I use time blocks and I get up at 6 AM to use the focus time for schoolwork before I go to my job. Then I work on my comic during my lunch break and do remaining school before bed.

    I suck at time management in all aspects of my life, I'm going to try and put this into effect in not just my creative life. Thanks. I'm going to sit down with my hubby and really give this a go. And I used to write a food journal down after being diagnosed with UC and it does help I can back that. I cut a lot of trigger foods.

    A tip for time audit: check out RescueTime. It's an app that will track the time you spend on every activity, either on your PC or your smartphone. You can set each one of them as productive, neutral and distracting. Also, it'll send you an e-mail with your weekly report, and will tell you if you reached your productivity goals by the hours you spent working and the hours you spent distracted (you can change them too). There's a paid version, but all I said is totally free and there is a bunch more things that will help you being more productive. I just love this app, so I thought it would be great to share with you all. It's amazing!

    Having a full-time job not creative-related and being a dad, I work on my sketching, drawing practices and comics at the end of the day, when the house is sleeping. Not the best, but I able to stocks a couple of hours mostly everyday.

    I don't have an issue with time management, but I would add a caveat -- don't schedule everything. Like, yeah, block out 4 hours for life things, but don't schedule life things. When you're WORKING, that's something that should have tasks and scheduled things, but you should also have a VOID of time where life can just happen, freely.
    To me, structure is where real freedom is found, but that also means structuring time that has no purpose but to exist.
    (I agree with most all of this. Get a fridge and microwave for your office. I even close the cats out. Haha)

      That's a great note. Your schedule should be flexible. If the muse strikes and you need to spend all day on a specific project, then go with it. You can reschedule all that other stuff for other times. Likewise, if you're stuck on a cognitive problem, time away from it might be the best way solve it.

    One thing that I utilize on my work-at-home days is something that I actually learned from another one of your videos, which is a reward-system. More for when I'm working on big pieces that take up a span of a couple days, I reward myself with intermittant 10-20 minute breaks for every milestone, mostly so I don't get crazy or start to focus too much on the little details. Pencils are done, watch an episode of something. Inks are done, play video games for a few minutes, etc. Or some days I'll bank them all up and just take a long lunch to take a walk or something. The point is, for time spent doing productive things, I'll reward myself in some way or another by spending a small chunk of time on something fun, and that's seemed to work for me!

    Fantastic video! I've found all your points on time management to be true in my experience and recommended by professionals who help people manage their time, too. Mornings are not my time of day but that's ok. Pomodoro Technique is kinda fun. S.M.A.R.T. Goals helped me.     I am really easily distractible, and I tend to try to like, trick myself into being productive, or gamify it. I use a free app called Tide that plays different kinds of white noise-enough to be stimulating but not distracting. While those noises play it has a timer that ticks until a scheduled break time, and then it plays another timer during your break to when you need to get back to work. Its been really helpful and really fights back against burning myself out too fast!

    Todo lists and writing down hours spent working toward your future work wonders! Ive lost weight and gotten good grades, as well as gotten better at my craft. For todo lists, I recommend "tasks", it's great for phones and its free and the creator listens to feedback.

    Awesome video Jake, nice to see you back! I was wondering, have you ever heard Cortex, the podcast with CGPGrey and Myke Hurley. A bunch of things you mentioned here are similar to what they discuss there, the time audit is you version of their time tracking, for figuring out your most productive task. It's a really good podcast I highly recommend it.

    Regarding the To-Do List issue, I believe I may have found a remedy for it. Imo, determining the importance of the activity on the list is as easy as using a 1-5 star system. The more stars on the activity, the more important the activity is. I hope this helps.

    Hi Jake. Just a minor point about the video. The background blur keeps changing as you move closer and further from the camera, which I find a bit distracting. (This may be a nitpick because I used to work on compositing.) I do not know exactly what caused this, but probably the camera focus was set as auto or tracking object.
    Of course, this is really minor since I don't see any other comment on this :)

    Hey Jake! So glad your making videos again! I was just telling my wife I need to make a time budget for myself.... I am an artist and musician that desperately wants to JUST be those things but currently I work 60 hours a week welding to support my beautiful wife and three kids. My " free time" is very limited so this video was helpful but not quite suited for my life..... any advise for a guy like me to make the best use of his time?

      I totally get it. For a long time I worked a day job and had to do all my personal/freelance at nights and on weekends. Here's what someone in that situation should do. You might be doing all of these, in which case...I got nothing else to say. But here goes:
      0) If you can figure out how to get down to a 40 hour work week do that, because you'll need it to do 1-6.
      1) Cut the fat - Cut back on (or get rid of entirely) Netflix, Video Games, Social Media Surfing, TH-cam Surfing, Reddit, and pretty much anything that doesn't actively contribute to you creating something.
      2) Optimize your commute - If you take public transportation use this time to sketch, or write. Where headphones so people know not to talk to you. If you drive, use this time to listen to podcasts and audio books related to music, art, creativity, and productivity. This boosts your desire to use the rest of your free time creatively.
      3) Optimize your Lunch Break - Bring a lunch so you don't have to waste time going to get it, and find a place that you can actively work on something without being interrupted. You'd be surprised to find what you can get done in a week of lunch breaks.
      4) Go to bed early, and wake up early - Studies show that you're less creative and focused at nights. Your brain has a full days worth of experiences it's carrying around and hasn't processed yet. If you can, do an hour of something before bed, then get your rest and wake up a couple hours early and work on your stuff. There's nothing like going into work already having done something creative.
      5) Optimise Weekends - If your family can handle it, take one day or a half day during the weekend and devote it entirely to your craft. You can use your lunches and mornings to prep for this day, but use this day to get significant work done.
      6) Rest - Take a day on the weekend (I prefer Sundays) to give yourself cognitive rest. Sleep in if you can, do chores, go on walks with your wife/kids. Don't do anything super creative.
      You can do anything for a few months, like stay up until 2am every night working on stuff. But that isn't sustainable. And I don't think you'll produce your best work doing that. So try to find a work/life balance that is sustainable.

    a tip I received about time management is to use a timer to help you concentrate. If I'm having a hard time trying to concentrate, I set my timer to 30 minutes and turn off everything else for that period. Often I end up concentrating so much I keep going even after the time ended.

    Question for Mr.Jake Parker,
    Hi! I'm current piecing a short story together, I know what I want for my story ending
    my middle story, but I'm having a story block at the start, Unsure how to set it off...
    My question is, How do you overcome a story block when writing a story for children's
    book or a comic book?
    Secondly, the paper you used for comic illustration, and recommendations or anything a
    "green" comic artist should look out for?

    I set myself a list of the things to do for the next day before I go to bed so it's off of my head and I don't wonder what I should start with once I'm up and had breakfast. I also cut off sites like Facebook until the evening with "SelfControl" (on Mac) so I can't access it and also use RescueTime to see where my weekly and daily time goes into.. :)

    What do you do if you suffer from depression and your the opposite and are most effective in the pm hours. For me 3 pm to about 1 am. :/ I've tried to reset my schedule since I also have a kid, I drag behind all morning. I find myself really tired, fog brained, and can't keep my eyes open, even if I go to bed early like at 9. If I try to maintain a normal schedule I lose personal time to work on things. I always used to put everyone first before me which I've been getting better at not doing. Many people accuse me of not being able to prioritize if I take time for myself, thus why I put everyone else first. I've also been told that I don't get that luxury since I'm a mom. My personal time consists of my child's bed time. (9-9:30 if lucky, 10 to 12 usually. Not ideal, but it's the only time I'm not bothered.) :/ I used to have his naps when he was younger but when your a mom they often tell you to nap with them, to prevent fry or burn out. So I often didn't utilize that time. :d I can try to reset again though, I guess all I can do is keep trying.

    If the most effective time of day is the first couple hours after waking up. Then what does that say about Shift Work. I am a nurse and have a very cognitively important job. I start work at 2:30 PM and get done at 11PM, So if I get up at 8 am then I am spent by the time I go to work. Am I thinking about that right?

    This way of viewing time as a valuable resource stresses me out like crazy! I see it all over and I assume that is because it works. For me as an ISFP Briggs- Meyer type, not so much. At least not as a place to start. Check out Personality Hacker if you feel the same. Podcast ep. 297 is especially helpfull, but it requires a bit of background research.

      Thanks for your support. Some of our earlier videos are pretty rough. The instruction is solid, but you're right about the delivery being unpolished. That's why we are going through and reshooting some of our older classes and replacing them with better visuals and audio so they match the level of production of the more recent videos we've been making.

    (sort of) #6: Takes practice. Lots of practice. If you totally fail after a few days of trying this system, it's not that it didn't work. I've been working on my system for years and it's still not perfect.

    Definitely don't work off a work list. What I do is when I get something done I write it down and check it off. There is a greater sense of accomplishment at the end of the day
