- Pam East, an internationally known artist, writer and teacher has been an enamelist since 1997. She visited Cool Tools to demonstrate the Basse-taille process using fine silver metal clay. She creates a low-relief pattern on kiln fired fine silver metal clay. She then adds translucent enamels from Thompson Enamel to the metal, allowing light to reflect from the relief, creating an artistic effect. I loved this video! Pam is such a good teacher, clear & concise, easy to listen to. I usually work in polymer clay but recently took an entry level metal clay class. I can't imagine making a piece as lovely as this one, she made it look so easy. I was going to not continue because my work seems so clunky but after viewing this I am off to order some of the tools she used. It gives me new hope that I can, with practice, gain some finesse and precision in metal clay. I especially love the bail maker! Thank you for sharing these instructions.

Wow that was a great video, just loved the enamelling on silver. I bought a very simple jewellery kiln when I was at school in the previous century ;-) and still have it, but it has no temperature controls, only heats up extremely high, so one has to watch through the little silica window and thumb suck lol, but I did many items enamelling on copper. I am not sure it will work so well with silvers as I have no idea what the temperatures are. What I usually did is melt the backing enamel into a grainy sort of surface, then apply the front enamel and fire them both smooth. My dad bent a metal skewer for me to use to scroll on it while in the oven to swirl dots of contrast colours in. I really have to do this again and try with silver

This video taught me more in 40 minutes than Jewellery course at uni in 2 years. And free. Moral of the story, do not waste money on pointless degrees.
You still get the paperwork though and a lot of employers want to see that diploma.
Also I have been taking classes at a local jewelry supply store; the instructors watch me and correct what I am doing wrong. Both youtube and real classes are great :-)

Thank you for the amazing video. I have a question. I use to be an antique jewelry collector. I still have some antique enamel pieces of gold. They don't have counter enamel on the back. And the layer of enamel looks so thin like paint. Did they use different materials in old days? Or is it possible to make something like them today?
I live in a shoebox apartment and thus will never enamel anything in my life but I still watched this beginning to end with maximum attention.

Hi Jeanette, we asked Pam East your question and she replied: "Copper Yes. Bronze No. The COE of the enamels is not a match for bronze and it will chip off. Copper works great though!"

Don't use transparent colors directly on copper. Its doesn't give the same effect that silver does.
bakinka2727 ofc you can use transparent enamels on copper. You just need to take into account the colour of the metal below. Copper isn't white like silver, so when it shows through transparent enamel it will affect the colours. Greens and blues are maybe not so great(but ofc that depends on what you're actually going for) reds, golds and oranges work well. They're still affected by the metal colour but it's in the same colour family so the colours aren't as altered. I would suggest testing out any colours you want to work with to see what you end up with.

Is Art Clay Silver a lower grade of sterling silver? Or just a silver metal?
Hello, Art Clay Silver is pure silver powder combined with non-toxic binders and water. Once fired, these binders burn away leaving 99.9% Silver. Thank you for your question!
Art clay silver after firing gives you what is known as fine silver, which is nearly pure, high grade silver and which is slightly softer than sterling silver. It is great to use for all jewellery that doesn't take hard wear, ie earrings, brooches and pendants and has the added advantage that it doesn't tarnish in the way that sterling silver does.
When it was all the metal clay world had, we used to use it to make rings, but it is undeniably more vulnerable to damage than the stronger sterling silver is. Now that is available it is what most teachers would recommend. As a comparison, if you wear two gold rings together of different carats, the lower grade one, which is alloyed with stronger metals, will eventually wear away the higher. In the same way as silver, the purer the gold, the softer it is.
Because sterling silver is harder, it is also the metal used for findings of various sorts. I have just made some earrings with wire loops at the top to attach to the ear wires, and those were sterling silver embedded into the clay while it was still wet. For more robust findings such as cuff links or brooches, the sterling silver findings are often soldered onto the fine silver front after they have been fired.
hello a cuestion the enamel can be used in any kind of material?, gold, copper, brass?, or will i ruin it when i use the fire?
Hi Gina, silver and copper are the most widely used mediums for enameling. Technically you can enamel over gold, but we don't recommend enameling over alloys such as bronze and brass. Thank you for the question!

I have several pieces of Basse-Taille enameled jewelry from Norway. I didn't know what it was called before. None of my pieces have enamel on the backside. It's silver with the maker's stamps, etc. Do you put the piece in a bezel or leave it with the back enamel exposed?
Hello, we asked Pam your question and she said: "If she bought a traditional enamel piece, it’s probably bezel set. My guess, without seeing it, is that it DOES have counter enamel, but it’s hidden by a bezel cup. This is common practice for traditional enamels. For my own metal clay work, I choose to just use a nice color on the back and let the counter enamel show. I don’t bezel set my pieces."

Man, that is just simply incredible color! I would just love to see this in person. Pardon my ignorance, but why do you use enamel instead of other options, like mica powder, alcohol ink, etc... with resin?
Hi Lori, enameling is much more stable than these options. It is more permanent and higher quality. Enamel is applying glass with color to a piece.
How durable is the enamel? How impact resistant is it? If I drop the pendant would it crack?

Hello! I am sorry, Pam is currently on vacation. To answer your question, yes, you can enamel on gold. Transparent warm color enamels on work beautifully on gold. Also, gold foil is another great option.

Hello, you can torch enamels, but it tends to give a more rustic look and does not come out as clean as kiln firing. The thing about torch firing is it usually needs to be bottom fired, not top fired. Top firing causes the enamel to ball up and/or scorch. The project does need counter enamel to keep it from cracking and chipping off.

Why did you bother sifting instead of rinsing off the fines?
Greetings, thank you for the note. Pam is traveling at the moment and will respond when she returns.
From Pam East:There are a number of ways to approach removing fines from enamels. I’ve taken classes with many enamelists and they all seem to have their own little tricks and techniques. Rinsing DOES work… If you know what you’re doing. But it often ends up sending a lot of good enamel down the drain, especially for beginners. And often not all the fines are removed, again most especially by beginners. My personal mission with regards to enameling is to maximize success for those just starting out. Screening is much easier and pretty much guarantees success. My students get very clear results with their enamels after screening. One other thing about my screening method. For Basse Taille, getting a super clear result so the texture is clearly visible beneath the enamel is critical. I’m really going a step farther than removing fines. I’m also sizing the enamel grains. I use 150/325 mesh enamels. Small particles packed tightly. That kind of sizing isn’t possible with just rinsing.

Very nice piece,but I wouldn't feel that it was created by myself without the cheating with the stencil in the beginning .surely the whole point of the project is to know u did more than 50% yourself. a little bit like you tore the paper and someone else wiped it.sorry to be so negative keep up the great works
