I don't think royalty is necessarily the problem. North Korea, Stalinist Russia, and Nazi Germany were all not monarchies.

They are also entirely tax-exempt and obviously do not need passport when they are ruling monarchs. Trust me, it adds up over the centuries and it’s time the people need to accept that any remnants of the British Royal Crown need to be phased out, without a constitutional monarchy especially after recent events.

While I agree that sending someone to jail for years because of a joke or criticism is harsh and tyrannic, some people really deserve to get punished for being very disrespectful to others, like journalists that for not fearing consequences, will throw the worst insults and even lies about a public figure or politician simply because they don't like them. There's a line between criticism and disrespect.

Benedict Anderson's book Imagined Communities has an afterword in which he talks about the various translated versions of his book, and spends a lot of time talking about the Thai version, where the ban of saying anything bad about any King of Thailand, PAST OR PRESENT, meant that the Thai translator basically rewrote all of the bits when he was talking about Thailand. (It's a book about the development of nationalism in various parts of the world and Siam/Thailand comes up a lot when he talks about Southeast Asia) He said it was so different it wasn't even really his book anymore.
