Soviet-era nostalgia still strong, 20 years on

  • More than 50 percent of Russians lament the downfall of the USSR -- although most would not wish to return to the past. Among the nostalgics for the communist era is Valentina. She says she feels more Soviet than Russian, and enjoys talking about her past years working in a factory.Duration:02:03

It is interesting how the nostalgia is growing in almost all transitional European countries. I was born in the late 80s, but I can understand that looking at the current situation in the transitional country I live in and the neighbouring ones. There are many qualified people in our country who were excellent students, but there is no job for them. They have to give instructions to students or use their parents' money to survive which is embarrassing. There are always austerity measures by the government which means lower income and bigger taxes. While it affects most of the people, the politicians live in luxury telling us we have socialist mentality and are lazy. But, we finance their 'honeymoons'. They say we have freedom to choose, but we know nothing will change.
Some say our problems are part of transition and we still don't have a 'real capitalism' like in the West. Maybe it is true... but Nikola Tesla, one of the greatest minds in human history, lived in poverty in the USA while idiots like Paris Hilton are ultra-rich. I think all those stories about working hard to become rich in capitalism are BOLLOCKS!!!

***** It's been almost 25 years and the policies have done nothing but throw people into worse conditions than they were under "Socialism" for many of the transitional countries. The Soviet Union went from feudal wasteland to industrial superpower in 15, why can't these countries even give a the quality of life to their citizens that the Socialist era did (which was very low-middle class by western standards at best)?
Why? Because "True Capitalism" is what these countries were really subjected too, chicago school economics that ripped all the production and wealth out of the countries and gave all the wealth to corrupt mafia men, oligarchs and Wall Street bankers leaving the people in the countries in abject poverty.
I like how Potemkin villages are often used by Capitalists to insult the USSR, but when the western media only shows the rich inner city business districts of capital cities and then refuses to show how 95% of the population actually lives? How in fuck is that different from a Potemkin village?

Economies of Soviet countries as well as Warsaw pact and Romania, Bulgaria countries were subsidized by government, Soviet countries lived in their own enclosed economical eco-system so the economy didn't compete with other countries. Oil, gas, wood, minerals and other raw materials were sold to get extra input but in reality the inefficient managing, lack of proper infrastructure and huge expenses made for military spending meant that the Soviet Union was running out of money. There was low unemployment because everybody was required to have a job, provided by state if necessary. It would be impossible to do with open economies, open borders and freedom to move, without an extra income for subsidizing all the extra spending by the state (Russia had and still has gas and oil fields to cover that part). I remember the 1980's as dull, uneasy and lacking most goods that are so common today, especially the late 80's when stores were empty, huge queues, moral of people going downhill etc

No! U do not understand anything about the Soviet Union, because ur American. The Soviet Union collapsing was something that many ppl have waited. Even tho I wasn't in that time, but my parents were because they are from the Soviet Union and have told me everything about it. Anyway, the СССР had a terrible economy which is why that led to the collapse of the Union. СССР had a strict and brutal leader named Joseph Stalin, there was NO religious freedom. It was terrible during the Stalin times, at least it was starting to improve after Stalin died. Around the 1970s when Breshniv was in power, corruption started to occur in the government! And even until this day, corruption that was taken place from the Soviet Union still goes. My point is, is that if the Soviet Union comes back, it's going to be the same. No freedom, brutal, strict. And if u were to be Russian living there before it collapsed, trust me... u would look for ways to escape it! Because remember, borders were closed. Ppl weren't allowed to leave the border of the Soviet Union, only government officials and diplomats. The Soviet Union as well treated ppl unfairly, the government officials always say that nobody can try anything from the West. Food, clothes, vehicles, etc. But, the government officials would always use stuff and eat stuff from the West. That is so unfair. Is this the kind of life u want if the Soviet Union reunited? I definitely would say no, if u have questions about this topic, let me know! I know a lot about the Russian history and the Soviet Union as well as I'm Russian and I follow the traditions of Russia cuz thats wut my parents told me to do so. I want everybody to understand that Communism is awful! And I feel bad that ppl in those Socialist countries have to live through this. Vietnam, China, Laos, Cambodia, pretty much South-East Asia is filled with a Communist economy.

even if i live in a capitalist nation i still feel like one with the russians.

chigarets so popular because of the greedy buisness men to gain more money.
i also hear around me only dirty jokes or dirty languadge and filthy dirty music.
or i see sadness it self:poor people on the streets of our cities beging for money for bread with ruined clothes and the goverment dose ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FOR THEM!!!!!!
only in my home i feel my self(not that my family is communist or entierly understands me.) for in my home i go to my computer and hear the songs of communsim and all that i feel will embrase it (syria, pro russian ukraine etc)and i feel a weight leaving me.
i also play game involving the soviet union on them on witch you can play as them (red alert, war thunder, world at war etc)
i'm keep learning from communism and i become an even better man but of course it is obvius i will see both the lies the capitalist pig dogs say the "communism is evil",every time i hear it i want to vomit and my head get warm of anger.
i hate both capitalist and fascists for their crimes and what they have done and european union is both of these.
having my nation in it and especialy our soldiers aiding NATO MAKES ME FEEL SICK TO MY STOMACH!!!!

I seriously doubt you're America based on your grammar, but you do have to know that the average IQ of a Russian is 96, which is below the western average. You see, the communist killed off the most intelligent and hard working because those would be the individuals that would resist communism the most. After the communist took over, they encouraged the less intelligent to outbreed the more intelligent because it is the dumb, the dullard and the lazy who supports communism. After the USSR collapsed, a lot of the remaining smart people moved to London and New York. Modern Russian society is very consistent with a low IQ because of a lot of people die from violent deaths and accidents.....very strange accidents...….and Russia is literally going to rot, when it should be the wealthiest country in the world with all the natural resources.....communism is the sin of man.

She may be naively supporting Stalin, don't know why, but certainly the Soviet system of 70s, and 80s assured many positives. Could they not continue with that system, without making it a police state? Talent technology was there certainly in Soviet system. Exotic consumption was not there.

al_pune you can’t have good without bad, if the Soviet Union became more liberal, it will rot and collapse fast. And it did, people wanted independence, they wanted more money, they wanted more things for themselves, and they were able to do it once speaking out and rebelling against the government was allowed. And it took 2 years for it to be dissolved by Gorbachev, mainly because a second Civil War was on it’s way because hardline Communists and Stalinists were against Gorbachev and his new policies, and getting ready to get rid of him. People would’ve started a Revolution against the Stalinists if they took back control over them. Gorbachev said it himself in an interview, he genuinely didn’t want a Civil War since it would kill so many innocent people, and it would just leave who ever wins weak, and in ruin from the War.

Many of these old people had a steady job back then, even if they were incompetent, lazy or drank on the job they were rarely laid off because everyone was required to have a job. They were aasigned a job after school, so there was no competition for vacancies which meant more job securty but also that the moral on workplaces was sometimes low. When it comes to salaries the average salary was not really bigger than it is today in Russia, but with less goods and services in the market and prices dictated by the state it meant that people spent less and more importantly, the social ties, people who knew you and you knowed meant that you could buy products that were rarely sold. "Under the counter" was the term for that type of purchases and meant you had to provide some favour in return. Quality furniture, clothing, but also car parts for an example. Those who were in Communist Party or had relatives/friends there were doing quite good, no doubt.

Very interesting that most of the people @ 1:25 - 2:04 are older people who've spent most of their lives living in the Soviet Union. Now, she does have some good points, but what about the fact that the Soviet Union allowed little/no rights, especially under Stalin, although, rights did expand after Stalin's death. The Soviet Union is just 1 thing which is very mixed by the people who've lived there. Some former Soviets agree with Valentina, while other former Soviets disagree with her. Very mixed opinions from former Soviet citizens, which is 1 of the most fascinating things to me. I take a very mixed view of the Soviet Union who looks @ the Soviet Union as a good test case & a really good example of looking @ both sides & the idea of pros & cons. Hey, if Valentina misses the Soviet Union, that's absolutely fine with me & as a human being, she has every right to voice her opinion & she has every right to wish that the Soviet Union came back today.

Of ourse old people will reminisce about "the good old days" , especially those who belonged to the "working class", their salary and benefits of a tractor operator or a crane operator exceeded salaries of teachers, historians. Jobs that are paid more today and farmers, crane operators who require much less education and intellectual skills are making less. So ofcourse, they are feeling being left out and being old, they will become bitter and take refuge in Stalinism era, during which millions of Russians died because of repressions in prisons, forced labour camps and deportation with not being allowed to return to home. Remember the slogan "all proletariat across the world - unite". Those who complied with every demand and limitation of the Soviet regime and praised the Communist Party, were doing fine. But nowadays knowing all the crimes against their own people, it's weird to see people justifying that time. Praising Hitler is illegal in Germany, but in Stalin is a hero...

Can the passengers of a ship determine the course of the vessel taking into account only the direction of the winds, sea currents and the height of the waves? Disregarding the captain and his will? - The answer is clear. Likewise, people can not explain past and present events properly, ignoring the existence of God and His will.
The founder of the state, Lenin hated God, persecuted Christians. This fact condemned his work to failure. Throughout the existence of the Soviets, atheism prevailed in the country, often it was a militant atheism, from which the calamities of Russian people - terror, hunger, GULAG, murders, bloody wars, occurred. And what was worse - several generations were deprived of the vital Word of God.
However, according to the Bible, God cannot be mocked. He elevates kings, He removes kings. The collapse of the USSR, no doubt, was a perfect Act of God. Gorbachev, Yeltsin, and others only did the will of the Lord.

    All these comments are nuts.
What are you talking about? Russia is a huge place. It crosses 7 time zones. It has every resource and capability known to man. Every commodity in the world exists in Russia.
They have richest and largest amount of combined natural resources in the world. They could be a huge tourist destination if they tried a little. They could have ski resorts, and beach resorts. They have oil, forestry, natural gas, water, agriculture, manufacturing capability, technology, education..... They literally have everything right at their fingertips. They are the ones choosing NOT to properly utilize those things. They have had 30 yrs to recover from the collapse of communism. But greed and corruption ruin them...as it always has.
I think Putin is a smart and powerful man. But he is a still a slave to the oligarchs. And he is not a smart business man. Hes good at many things. He understands espionage and geopolitics better than most. But I honestly dont think he would have a clue how to even run a hot dog stand. He does nothing to open the doors for business in Russia.
And the old lady in this video certainly has an endearing spirit... But not everyone wants to live like that. She failed to mention that the job was chosen for her. She failed to mention that she assigned that crappy apartment. She failed to mention that she has nothing to show for her years of work. She appears to have no family. She probably did not marry or have kids...because of her assigned obligations to the factory. She is alone, and poor.... Now why is that?
It's because communism fell apart!!!! Russia was crumbling from within. You had things like a 10 year waiting list for a new car. You stood in line for things like bread and toilet paper. You got one Russian made tv. You did not have a choice of where to go and what to buy. The healthcare system sucked. You can take that life and shove it. Just because there was some basic level of security, for some people.... does not make it a worthwhile venture.
I live in Texas...and I always have. My family goes back almost to the beginnings of Texas. We are free here. We have more jobs than there are people to fill them.
I work my dream job... that I chose for myself. I have incredible healthcare. I have a retirement account, and it is my money that I control. I won't be dependent on government when I'm old. I am free to live where and how I want to live. I have such a great job, my wife does not have to work. We homeschool our kids. We buy whatever food we want, whenever we want. We have choices for almost everything.
Not only do I have a great job... But in addition to that job, I own my own small business as well. I am free to do what I want to do. I can be anything.
I have roughly 6 weeks of vacation time every year. If I dont use it... I can carry most of it over to the next year.
I am not rich. I am right square in the middle. But I started close to the bottom. And worked for everything I have.
    Communism is evil!

Lenin loved the system he made and called all of the citizens "useful idiots"
Stalin starved everyone to death and was brutal. Yes he did win the war but that was about it. He put jews in concentration camps as well, And if you tried to buy a plane ticket or leave town and especially the country you could be put in the psych unit. Religion was not an option, Atheism was the only way. Speaking out could get you in a work camp or gulag. Russia is not a lot better than it was then but hey you got more freedom now than then, except that you still cannot speak out against the government. Yes you would get free apartments and most things were free, that is great! but at the same time I rather work to make my life better instead of staying at a level where i can never rise out of where i would be in poverty in siberia for the rest of my life and not be able to do anything about it

Logan F. Lenin never called anyone a Useful idiot, it's an urban myth and the saying first came from 1941:
"Russian 'nihilists' were for Polish agents no more than useful fools and silly enthusiasts, which could be goaded to go through fire and water." by Vasily Bazanov, it was attributed to the Communist Party and Lenin by guess who, Ludwig Von Mises (far-right wing ultra capitalist) who pulled it out of his arse.
