Creator Burnout - It's a real thing - should I quit YouTube?

  • There’s been a lot of talk on TH-cam about Creator burnout recently. I’ve been suffering that for quite some time!
But watching videos from other creators explaining why they are quitting TH-cam, I realised there s a theme running through their problems.
When you start out on TH-cam, it’s you, on your own having fun, then it turns into a job and… well… it’s just not the same fun any more.
So having got myself physically, almost back on track, It’s time to cut out the boring stuff, forget the algorithm and just have some fun again and try to remember what it was all about in the first place.

You are a true inspiration, not just to kids but to us adults too. I came across your videos about 5 years ago. I was on sick leave from work (hurt my back). I was 56yo, I got my wife to get me some pencils and a sketch book, and I haven't stopped drawing and painting since, I've even sold a few. You got me through a dark time in my life, thank you. Keep up the great work.

Oh! That is so great to know. sometimes it has been a chore to make videos, wondering what's the point, but doing them anyway. now I know why! 😀

I think just hearing about your day to day (month to month?) adventures and experience is really interesting. I always thought you had it all figured out by now but the fact that you keep questioning the why's, what's, and how's is actually encouraging. Sometimes it's the questions we ask ourselves, deep questions, that make for some fascinating introspection. But coming up with those questions is what you seem to do so well. What I think draws most people to your channel are your insights and the questions you ask of yourself.
The answers are not only educational but also thought provoking.
As for your drawing videos - sure others do drawing videos but no one says, "let's not talk about it, let's do it!" (cue motivational jingle!) No one teaches the Shoo Rayner drawing style except Shoo Rayner. Could someone else play the character of Shoo Rayner? Frank Libowitz of Milwaukee might have some time to take up the role soon but until then...
I can't say how many times I've followed along and afterwards patted myself on the back for what turned out on the page but secretly realizing that you were guiding my hand and educating my eyes 🙂
If you stopped making videos today, sure I'd miss your new content. But I realize that nothing is forever. In the mean time it's nice to have you part of my TH-cam family!

I will tell you what...I truly appreciate your candor and vulnerability in expressing what you are experiencing at the moment. I have had similar feelings in regards to teaching and I have only been at it for five and a half years...not 35 or 40 years as you have as an illustrator and author.
However, I think you still have a lot to offer. I think a "reset" is not a bad thing; it's like a little rest stop on a long journey. No one will fault you for taking a break because life happens. Often on those long journeys, a little reset is exactly what the doctor ordered; I often feel very rejuvenated and excited to be back behind the wheel and on to my destination. But some of the best memories of our summer vacations are those little respites at far flung locales that I never thought we'd ever visit. In a way, those little spots have helped define what the journey is all about.
I believe I have loosely followed your channel as a subscriber for three or four years. I enjoy the content, I have learned a lot, and I have tried to pass some of what I have learned from you on to my own art students. My own students know that I am an aspiring children's book author and illustrator but have never taken the plunge into the deep end and really see if I can make a go of it. But the insights you have shared over the years have provided the encouragement to continue after my dream and for that, I thank you.
I like the insight that has been shared with me on several occasions; that you "get" to do what you are doing, not that you "have" to do what you are doing. I think finding that going back to how you felt when you first started in the industry and tapping into those original set of feelings is an excellent idea. A long tenured educator told me two years back that he admired my enthusiasm and tenacity BUT to not pour so much of myself into my teaching that I lose that passion, become resentful, and burnout along the way.
Do what is best for you, sir. Do what rekindles that spark and feeds your creativity. Even if there are thousands of people doing TH-cam videos, you are still an original, one of a kind teacher and you have lots to offer. I think the people who enjoy your videos, and it looks like that's over a quarter of a million subscribers, will all continue to enjoy your content because of the person behind the material.
Sorry about the long-winded message but I just wanted you to know that I truly did appreciate everything you shared and I admire you for it, too.
    All the best!

Thanks so much for this. other peoples' lives seem so sorted. don't they? But, I think we all go through this stuff and the more sensitive you are the more you feel it and succumb to it.
There is no easy way to get started as a children's author, illustrator, but the longer you put it off the further away the possibility of achieving that aim. I'm sure you students would want you to go for it and be interested in the journey too.

Wow! I read your title and was afraid you were going to quit making your very enjoyable videos. I’ve enjoyed all your channels for years and you have really inspired me to draw more and daily. You’re also just an interesting man to listen to when you just talk to us. I know all good things come to an end at some point but I hope you’re around forever!😁 Cindy from Arizona!!

Shoo, this title scared me! I put off watching it out of fear that we were loosing you! Thankful that’s not the case! I really like that you just want to have fun, and who knows what that will bring, the important bit is that who cares! I am excited for the publishing content, because as someone who wants to be a childrens book illustrator, that also sounds super helpful (as well as interesting!) My favorite videos are the ones where you are just drawing and chatting with us for a long time, I always watch those when I draw myself. But that’s just my opinion, make the content that is really and truly fun😊

This is good news! Congratulations on the trilogy's progress. Alex asked the other day if I'd spoken to you lately, and it was actually the day I'd contacted you. Alex (who is 12), said, "That's great! Mr. Rayner is the goat!" I came up out of my seat, grabbed the kid by the arm, and said, "WHAT DID YOU CALL HIM?" "What, dad, what did I say?" "Son, that man is as far from being the goat as you are as far away from the moon!" To which my wife stuck her head in the door and said, "Gabe, it's not the 80s anymore. Goat means Greatest of all Time." Well, color me embarrassed. When I was a kid, being "the goat" meant you were a loser and came in last at everything. lol (And I agree about self-publishing vs. traditional publishing. When I was first paid for my work, the story caused a (very small) sensation, so editors started asking for stories from me. It was a heady time...but the money wasn't that great, and I dislike not being in charge of my work. The first time I self-published--and it worked, and the money tripled--that's all she wrote. It would have to be an ENORMOUS project with lots of money involved to get me to ever get trad published again.) Great video, Shoo. Thanks for sharing your plan with us.

If writing is an issue would it help to enlist suggestions and let your audience help build a story (perhaps one more amenable to that change in direction than the ones you are writing now?) You did say you like to do things youself, though. :)

:) I wasn't trying to imply your didn't have plenty of ideas. :o I just thought throwing in some random elements from outside might be a fun diversion - but that is a bit impetuous of me. :\ I've only been watching you regularly for perhaps a bit more than a year (I don't really watch you for the drawing lessons per-se - so my perspective might be a little different) so I don't really have much depth to my comments...for that I apologize. I'm hoping your potential annoyance with my comments balances out with the need for them to feed the YT algorithm. :) @@shooraynerdrawing

    • @shooraynerdrawing
      @shooraynerdrawing  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Sorry I wasn't annoyed. 😀 your input is very welcome. I've thought in time I might try something like you suggest - a sort of flash mob idea fest to create something. I also thought it would be great to come up with an open copyright text so everyone can do their own illustrations to create different books with the same text. All in time 😌
