To anyone watching this in 2024, I have made a new video on the topic with updated information, tools and thoughts: th-cam.com/video/53nCqFnPh3A/w-d-xo.html
I totally understand your frustration from a film maker's perspective. And while I could certainly write a novel on the topic of music licensing & micro-licensing, I'll say that overall it's probably a good thing that a site like epidemic or music bed wouldn't let you use music for anything outside of personal use (Vlogs, personal videos, etc...). I get the frustration on the spec ad side of things, but I think they do it to protect their artists and composers too. Music is so widely undervalued these days, and it often times feels like a crawl to the bottom. I'm trying not to be biased about this at all (For full transparency I am a composer who makes my living from licensing music). I don't write music for Epidemic, Artlist, or music bed, but hearing that art list's pro plan covers commercial use for a roughly $20 subscription plan is definitely not sustainable. I think it should be a case by case basis depending on the client. This is where things can get grey offering micro licenses, because so many youtubers/filmmakers will dabble with commercial gigs too. It's really important to know what type of licenses you're agreeing to. Like I mentioned, I definitely understand your frustration with these companies, but knowing that companies like music bed cracks down on the commercial licenses is a green flag in my book overall. I'd rather put my high quality music in the hands of a company that would protect their artist's rights . The second you get any brand involved (Spec ad or not), the license should move to a business license as opposed to the personal license you signed up for. Personal use should stay personal use, and business should apply to more commercial work. Regardless, this was a great video and I loved hearing your perspective on this!
Thanks for your comment. Appreciate hearing this from the other side of things! Musicbed went back on this and I respect that they changed their terms after this. Spec ads and reels are now supposed to be covered. Which makes sense, as a lot of young/beginner filmmakers are playing around with spec ads and reels without ever getting jobs from it. I understand that it at some point COULD lead to commercial work, but if it's a self funded video I don't think it should be considered commercial. And thanks for the positive feedback!
I once paid thousands of $ for a music license from Musicbed. A single song since it was a large sponsor. They had a hidden clause that disallowed google ad revenue and so they still claimed my video. This despite me being VERY clear about what I needed from the license. There is other stuff I don't wanna talk about publicly, but Musicbed/Film Supply are not creator friendly. I use Epidemic, Monstercat, & Artlist now depending on my needs now and they have all treated me well. Although I agree having to approve each individual video does get tedious with client work.
We were using Artlist for years. It’s a scam. They say that you have no problems using it on TikTok or TH-cam… lies. Flagged all the time. We cancelled. Then they’ve told us the tracks we have licenses for only covers IF we continuously keep the license!!! So anything created after the license end even though we previously had unlimited usage of the track, now it has limits. False advertising. Beware
This review is pure gold! I used Epidemic Sound to make videos, and that was just fine. Recently I`ve started to create non-talking shorts where the right song will be the key to the specific mood. Trending, uploaded music on TH-cam suits me perfectly! But as I know, I wouldn`t be able to monetize those videos (another super-unclear thing), if I`ll ever get the monetization lol. So I was struggling with what to choose: cool mood, or opportunity to monetize in the future! I`m happy that I have a reason to try Artlist, as you brought up your experience and told it`s def not bad))
Very happy to hear this was helpful to you! It’s hard to find the right one, as there are a lot of options out there. It doesn’t help that some creators are paid to promote a service, because it makes it harder to get the real experience. Good luck with your monetizing!
You can always contact composers directly and get bespoke tailor-made music for your films. Furthermore, licenses for such work-for-hire arrangements typically don’t cost too much for online use.
Wow, did not know it was that strict. This is if you choose "Individual + "no client work", right? I have the "Business" => "Small" client coverage package for $99 per month. Per the contract, I can use it for commercial projects if the company has 1-50 employees or TH-cam channels with up to 1M subs.. And then use Epidemic Sound for larger clients.
With Musicbed their policy at the time of recording this video was that with the creator plan you were not free to use it for spec ads, reels etc. But if you are on the business package, I am sure you're good. That being said, I had a meeting with Musicbed a few weeks ago and they will up their game going forward. I think they will do more to please creators from now on!
if Artlists search filters, genres, etc worked better and it didnt take hours to find suitable music, it would be a lot better. i'm currently searching for music and it seems like the BPM filter doesnt work at all.
I'm using Artlist for over a year already and it's still satisfying me! I also totally can relate to your issue with all music providers that finding the right music is a hard thing. I wouldn't know how to solve this, but if they can find a solution for that, it definitely would be a no-brainer.
Hi, there’s anotger option: working with composers directly to get bespoke tailor-made music for your films should be a viable go-to part of filmmakers’ productions. These aforementioned music libraries have a very cheap lure but their licensing can be a minefield. Working with composers on a work-for-hire basis and directly licensing their music typically doesn’t cost much for online use. Most composers should be able to help you out with understanding all this.
Musicbed also don't make it 100% clear that most of their music will get a copyright claim on TH-cam. So even though you have a valid license, if your channel is monetised, you won't get the money. Like, what's the point in the license then? I could've got the song from a digital store for a dollor & let the artist get the youtube money. Artlist for the win. No issues whatsoever!
I just started the free trial for epidemic sound and got a copyright on the first song I used… on a TH-cam video this past weekend. Very frustrating… that video has done very well for me and I had to remove the song to get the monetization from it.
I am a beginner on TH-cam. I come from Vietnam. Thank you so much for your valuable video that made me make the best decision to choose for my Podcast. Wishing you all the best, Handsome Man!
I was about to sign up for Epidemic Sounds, but your video made me think twice. I sat down and I thoroughly read their terms and agreements. I found it didn't fit what I wanted to do.
Valid. Thanks for pointing out the differences. One thing I really appreciate with Epidemic Sound is the option to download the stems of a song. It really improves the entire process around sound design. Does Artlist have that option, too?
Thanks for watching! I agree with you. That’s something I really liked about ES myself. Unfortunately, I have not seen any of the other services having this feature.
Would you mind doing some tutorial on how to use Artlist? Are those "video transitions" they offer like copy pasted into your video editor? I also suppose once you cancel your subscription, you can still keep your videos out there.
This was so helpful! Also, I love your background colors!!! I can't believe you are not at a thousand followers yet, your content and video quality is AWESOME!
I agree, it's hard to find the right sound track that you are looking for. I am looking for the right music platform to use between Epidemic sounds and Artlist to use for my Timelapse art videos.
We had a 1 year subscription for Epidemic sound (we got it 50% off, I am guessing it's not possible to have another code if we renew the subscription?) But anyway, I think about canceling Epidemic and go for Artlis, well, it will be some different music. One question, for Artlist, you add the social media channels in the account and it's all cleared for the personal account? How does it work for client videos, how do you cleare them? Thank you.
Thanks dude! I will make a new video as their terms are different now than a year ago. Musicbed has reached out to me and they have made some changes worth looking into!
Great review Kris. I have been using Epidemic Sound and Storyblocks so fare and am curious about Artlist, especially for client work. Thanks for sharing. Cheers from LA.
Yes, they changed them after I made this video. I contacted them about it and they said I didn’t need to clear the songs. But I’m not sure if that’s accurate. Really don’t appreciate the new terms.
I’m looking for the new terms and can’t find them. Their site says we just need to clear specific channels. Google didn’t turn anything up. Can you point me to a source?
@@maxillariadendrobulum4079 I contacted them about this, and they said we wouldn't have problems with uploaded content, but clearing them would make it safer. I really dislike the fact that they changed this, as that was the biggest selling point for me.
Thank you for your honest explanations and feedback . I am currently using Artlist and planning to switch to Epidemic Sound . But now i will keep my subscribtion with Artlist.
I really love your glasses. Where did you get them from? Obviously concerned about picking the right music library, I was just taken with the boldness of your frames.
U R shooting from the hip ! i love it - agreed AL seems the best option for me as well ATM , excellent video Kris , good to put this out there nice and clear and clean !
Filmmakers should stop using all three of these amateurish, scamming companies and source music from reputable PRO publishers or directly from composers. The deals these companies make with their own composers is shockingly awful and devalues the whole intricate art of film music.
This is a very important issue. Also something I don't know how to solve as most filmmakers don't have the budget to pay for the composers. Sometimes a composer's fee is more than the project itself. Although I would have loved to pay for custom composed music, I don't always have the money for it.
Thanks for the warning. The video and comments have been super valuable, it sucks becuase their music seems great but... using their music with clients seems way too risky.
I will make a new video as their terms are different now than a year ago. Musicbed has reached out to me and they have made some changes worth looking into!
Honestly if your audience doesn't watch ads anyway (either ublock or premium) Why not use whatever music you like. Not planning to make money off yt anyway
That’s true to a certain extent. If a provider chooses to take your video down, or tells you to, it doesn’t matter if you’re making money on it or not :)
I have been struggling with the same question myself. I don't know if/how they control the SFX we download. But I would say that whatever isn't mine, I shouldn't use. So I'd go with other SFX if I were you!
@@kriswarwickWas just about to click upload but you replied so fast in time! I will try artlist and was wondering if you know if they have a free trial or any links affiliated to you I can use?
As a professional filmmaker who has their films on Tubi, Amazon, etc... can I used Atlist music and sound eFX with no restrictions and no licensing issues?
Thanks for the video!. I am also new TH-camr:) Still learning about musics etc. thanks for your advice. greetings from the UK! and your new subscriber here :)
I used Epidemic Sound a while back. And stopped because I had no use of it. I ended up getting a claim on one of those videos. so I reached out to them. First they complained because I was not currently sub to them. But I told them I where when that video was uploaded, and they could see that. took a little while before they admited that and helped.. Not even checked their webstie since then.
My biggest concern with these services is that I will get 100 claimed videos after I cancel my subscription. I can't be paying for the rest of my life for some old content but then again I can't ruin my channel with pointless strikes after I'm no longer a customer. They promise on the website that this should not happen but here we go again one more sample of it not working like that. Only safe bet would probably be to use youtube music library.
I think this depends on the definition. I would assume that if the soundtrack is considered the main part, and the video just supporting the music, you might face the same challenges with most providers. If the music is supporting the video, I am sure you are good. But to me it sounds like you might have to reach out to each provider, explain your case and see what they have to say!
I needed this one today! Thank you! It's sometimes hard to keep it up when I only have 80 ish subs and few views, but comments like this one keeps me going! 🙏🏼
@@kriswarwick I only have 350, I spent 3 months last fall doing consistent weekly long form release & weekly live show trying to find my voice and nail down my niche, then took 10 months off then came back full time two weeks ago. Its a struggle, and every little comment, like or sub is fuel. People don't know that, but it's true. Also I use Epidemic, and also used them on another channel from 2016-2018 and never had an issue and the music is very good, if a little euro-centric for US market tastes, but so many royalty free sites have homogenized social media music since back then, it doesn't matter as much anymore. It's all sort of the same.
I appreciate this information… I’m trying to figure out all of this for a new channel I’m starting and it’s giving me a headache… learning to play blues slide guitar myself would be easier than finding a license/subscription that I can be confident in, and I mean that literally.
How about Audiio? As hobbyist, that may use music for personal projects every now and then, I wanted to have 'non subscription' type option, and Audiio offered it. They have also quite good licensing ("The license covers an unlimited number of downloads for your content, including your personal and client projects", "Your content is covered for promotional use for client projects", "Each license we issue for your projects is for perpetual, ongoing use and never expires even if you cancel"). But like I said, I'm not professional, and just doing things for personal fun/hobby. But I really would like to know if their lifetime deal is good or not. (I think I got discount for it when I get it, maybe it was 50% of or so.)
Great questions! I think that it really depends on your needs. I have heard a lot of good things about Audiio lately, so I am sure it is great. Personally, I haven't tried it yet. Maybe I should! For me Artlist has been amazing for client work!
I use both Artlist and Audiio plus a couple of others. If you only want to pay for one, Artlist is the best. Audiio is good, but it's less variety. I purchased a lifetime plan from Audioo for only $199 a couple of years ago, so it's good for ever with no additional payments. They have that same deal running now. If you go that route, that's all you'll ever pay with no need to pay for renewals. However, Artlist has more and better music, in my opinion. I guess it all depends on your taste.
Audiio is terrible. There library is small and I often found that I was seeing the same track in multiple genres. Also I forgot about the subscription and went to cancel it and found out they charged my card the day before. I asked for a refund and they denied me due to their T and C. I explained I hadn’t used their service for months and didn’t want another year of service. They said they didn’t care. Eventually they stopped responding to my emails. Their customer service was the most unprofessional I’ve ever dealt with. Avoid them at all costs
That sounds weird. Sometimes the license isn’t covering copyright for monetizing. So you might get a copyright on your video, but it won’t affect it other than you not being able to make money on it.
'Artlist' it is then! 🌟Perfect just the video I needed to make the right decision at this time... I was wanting to make free videos for other content creators that are friends of mine to train myself up more on the software and it looks like Artlist is the right choice for quality of content and price >> cheers 👌💯👀🎯😎🌟
Thank you for your honest video. You will get more views and subs one day, as this is a direct and honest video reviewing the music platforms available today(2024). I considered Epidemic as it felt like a great choice. Got a paid sub, liked a few songs, downloaded one. I got my entire project ready. Before posting the song, I'm thinking, should I attribute the song? What does the license say? And then I find out, you cannot use the song as just a standalone song, you cannot use the song as just a music listening experience song. So if you are doing something like cinematic music videos or motion graphics music visualizer music videos, save yourself the time and the money. EPIDEMIC SOUNDS WILL NOT ALLOW IT, EVEN IF YOU'RE SUBSCRIBED. That's how it is. Schade. Danke!
Wait a minute. Tell me please one thing about Epidemic Sound. What exact subscribe plan do you use when you start making videos with music for clients? I think it happens to you because you don't use the right plan for such purposes.
Thank you for your sharing! I'm planning on making a youtube channel about relaxing music. I can get music from the above channels (epidemicsound or Artist), then in the future I can get TH-cam to enable monetization?
I think this is a great question. If you consider the fact that the $400 generates more money for you, it’s not too bad. But also remember that the artists need to get paid, and Artlist has a business to run. Today I have a revenue of more than $200 000 USD so I understand that the price might seem more fair to me, than to someone who just started out. But then again, I’ve been paying that since I started out and back then I barely had income.
Very very new to this but for example I wanna use the song park inn by Dylan sitts on a video I'm making....how can I use that without getting in trouble? Please and thank you
If you haven’t paid to use it, or have the rights to use it, you probably can’t use it. By having a subscription with one of the mentioned providers (or any other music service) it will be hard to use music for your videos :) I am not familiar with the artist you’re referring to, but unless you’ve been given the rights, it might be hard for you to use it.
Just have a small question.once I take epidemic sound sub for one month and then end it will song on my video remains.i know i wont be able to monetize after one month
@@kriswarwickI was looking at Epidemic Sound today but I did see somewhere (probably a TH-cam video) that once you end your subscription to epic then they get your monetization rights to the videos you already have up...
Bro if i make client video and use artlist music and the video witll be promotion on Facebook and instagram of the client it will be problem with the copyright or what or do i have to give them the pdf license?
Nope! You can download a license with the song, and it works with that project. However, you can’t use that song in new videos. That’s how I’ve understood it!
@@ClarksvilleTN Musicbed showed themselves as professionals and took my issues with the service seriously. I think, and believe that they will make changes to their policy!
I agree it's a scam. after couple of months they started to demonetized one of my friends yt channel. Saying that my friend break their rules. But in my friend's sHock, #EpidemicSound only copyrighted all the contents that reach 1k views and more. If iin the first place my friend break their rules, they will copyright claimed him right after he upload videos not after 3mos and not after my friend unsubscribed to them. @EPIDEMIC SOUND = SCAMMERS!
The sound of the page does not work on Mac or iPad, Epidemic and other pages work fine. I already downloaded Chrome on Mac and it works, it still doesn't work on the iPad.
@@chrystianyaxche5381 the sound of the page? This is very interesting. I’ve never worked on anything but apple products, and have never had problems with the audio from Artlist …
Haha! I think it's important to emphasize that since this video was made Musicbed reached out and asked for my opinion. They brought me into the development of their changes in policy + tools. You should watch the newest review to get the "results" of the 2024 review!
I had problems with those from Epidemic Sound, they almost destroyed my TH-cam channel even though I had a bachelor's degree, I was paying the monthly subscription, it was miserable what happened! Honestly, I don't recommend any of them, they will link you to them and in addition you will indisputably receive copyright complaints. Make your own music, even if you're a beatbox veteran, be original, as TH-cam tells you, and you won't have any problems, period.

Glad it helped!

I really love your glasses. Where did you get them from? Obviously concerned about picking the right music library, I was just taken with the boldness of your frames.
It’s actually a pair of Oakley Hstn!
U R shooting from the hip ! i love it - agreed AL seems the best option for me as well ATM , excellent video Kris , good to put this out there nice and clear and clean !
Thank you! Appreciate you watching!
Really appreciate this video. Thank you! Swtiching from Soundstripe (which I have loved) but just need something new...
Thanks for watching!
Honestly if your audience doesn't watch ads anyway (either ublock or premium)
Why not use whatever music you like.
Not planning to make money off yt anyway
That’s true to a certain extent. If a provider chooses to take your video down, or tells you to, it doesn’t matter if you’re making money on it or not :)
@@kriswarwick okay I didn't know this is a thing, usually got a notice about ads on my videos but not that.
@@XTANCE it really depends on how they act. Most likely, you will be asked to take it down or buy the license.
I unsubbed from E.S and have a bunch of sfx downloaded. Can I use them in my videos without copyright?
I have been struggling with the same question myself. I don't know if/how they control the SFX we download. But I would say that whatever isn't mine, I shouldn't use. So I'd go with other SFX if I were you!

thanks, man! Glad I could help!
Give Extreme Music a go 👍🏻
Maaaan what a bummer. I was about to make the switch but dang I’ll save my money.
Right? I was super surprised and disappointed.
As a professional filmmaker who has their films on Tubi, Amazon, etc... can I used Atlist music and sound eFX with no restrictions and no licensing issues?
I would assume so.
Thanks for the video!. I am also new TH-camr:) Still learning about musics etc. thanks for your advice. greetings from the UK! and your new subscriber here :)
Thanks! Good luck on your YT adventure!
This is a very important video for content creators
Thanks! I hope so!
Very good video. Thank you so much. What does the client have to do if I use Arlist music in their video?
Thanks! You have to send them a link, or you can add them to your subscription!
That's a tough one...
In anycase don;t use soundstripe, not allow you to upload relaxing videos with music!! Do Artlist or Epidemic is eligible for relaxing videos?
I think this depends on the definition. I would assume that if the soundtrack is considered the main part, and the video just supporting the music, you might face the same challenges with most providers. If the music is supporting the video, I am sure you are good. But to me it sounds like you might have to reach out to each provider, explain your case and see what they have to say!
Recommended in feed. 82 subs? This is a very well produced video for a channel with only 82 subs. Will keep an eye on you!
The tale of false royalty-free music. A pure SCAM!!!
It's a difficult business to be in. I am glad I am not!
I appreciate this information… I’m trying to figure out all of this for a new channel I’m starting and it’s giving me a headache… learning to play blues slide guitar myself would be easier than finding a license/subscription that I can be confident in, and I mean that literally.
haha. This is the best comment here!

So which of these services is or are scammers? Which one is the scam????
Wow sorry to hear about your experience with musicbed. Thanks for sharing I’ll be skipping musicbed for sure.
They actually reached out and have changed their terms after this!
Dude I just don't understand why I got a copyright for using a song from my editing software Filmore
That sounds weird. Sometimes the license isn’t covering copyright for monetizing. So you might get a copyright on your video, but it won’t affect it other than you not being able to make money on it.
Hmmm... I just got a musicbed subscription haha. Hope it works out!
I’m sure it will!
If you can help, I'd appreciate it. What are the famous artists or songs on Epidemic Sound?
I am sorry, but I haven't had ES subscriptions in years!

This comment made my day. Putting a lot of work into these, and having someone comment something like this actually means a lot. Thank you! 🙏🏻
Sounds like a good choice!
Schade.
Danke!
Interesting! I haven't used them in a while, so I don't know what their current terms are, but did you sue it for something that wasn't a video?
Wait a minute. Tell me please one thing about Epidemic Sound. What exact subscribe plan do you use when you start making videos with music for clients? I think it happens to you because you don't use the right plan for such purposes.
I used the right plan, but it’s still the same problem having to clear each project. That’s just their way of doing things.
Thank ya i am going to sign up for this as i know i need, to have no issues come to music
Good info, thank you. Very strange terms from Musicbed. Will be avoiding them!
They actually reached out and have changed their terms after this!
Unfortunately my country Lebanon is not listed in their payments region....
That's really too bad.
Thanks for helping me decide on a platform, going to start my subscription with artlist.
Welcome onboard! Glad I could help you out!
Thank you for your sharing! I'm planning on making a youtube channel about relaxing music. I can get music from the above channels (epidemicsound or Artist), then in the future I can get TH-cam to enable monetization?
yes!
$299 is what Artlist charges per year. How is that good in any way for content creators?? That's $400 CAD. How can you endorse that!
Artlist seems great, met some of them.
I wish they had a lifetime deal. I hate to sub. It's a deal breaker.
They kinda have. If you're able to refer 10 subscribers, you'll get a lifetime subscription!
That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. I’ve been a huge fan of artlist for years now
They have been my go to for years too!

@@kriswarwick how come?
Very very new to this but for example I wanna use the song park inn by Dylan sitts on a video I'm making....how can I use that without getting in trouble? Please and thank you
If you haven’t paid to use it, or have the rights to use it, you probably can’t use it. By having a subscription with one of the mentioned providers (or any other music service) it will be hard to use music for your videos :)
I am not familiar with the artist you’re referring to, but unless you’ve been given the rights, it might be hard for you to use it.
Thanks man appreciate the video! I do have a question. Will I be able to use this for my dropshipping Ads ?
Thanks for watching. I don't know. I am sorry.
Just have a small question.once I take epidemic sound sub for one month and then end it will song on my video remains.i know i wont be able to monetize after one month
My experience is that it will work if your video is already uploaded. You can't upload it after the subscription ends, as far as I understand it!
@@kriswarwickI was looking at Epidemic Sound today but I did see somewhere (probably a TH-cam video) that once you end your subscription to epic then they get your monetization rights to the videos you already have up...
Wow the quality of your video 😱
Thank you! Appreciate that!
What does "1 channel per platform " mean? Sorry im very new to this😢. Thx
It means you can use one profile for each social media platform you're using. So one for Instagram, one for TH-cam etc. :)
@@kriswarwick Thank you, I think you "swayed" to 🎨 Artlist.
Bro if i make client video and use artlist music and the video witll be promotion on Facebook and instagram of the client it will be problem with the copyright or what or do i have to give them the pdf license?
You should be good, but you'll have to clear it. Artlist changed their license (for the worse) just after I made this video.
If you cancel your subscription to artist do you have to take the music out of your videos?
Nope! You can download a license with the song, and it works with that project. However, you can’t use that song in new videos. That’s how I’ve understood it!
Respect for your transparency, you helped me to move forward with Artlist🙏

I agree it's a scam. after couple of months they started to demonetized one of my friends yt channel. Saying that my friend break their rules. But in my friend's sHock, #EpidemicSound only copyrighted all the contents that reach 1k views and more. If iin the first place my friend break their rules, they will copyright claimed him right after he upload videos not after 3mos and not after my friend unsubscribed to them. @EPIDEMIC SOUND = SCAMMERS!
