Ok, this is what you're supposed to do to fix this problem properly, you'll need to gain access to the back of that switch and spray de-oxit or a similar contact cleaner, do it that way and you'll never have to worry about it again.
im here because i have a 1997 ford explorer oem original tape deck and it's the same... it just works whenever it feels like it... at first this was a quirky thing and i didn't care because it mostly worked... well nowadays it mostly DOESN'T work so i really hope it is a simple fix.
Trick is to push both buttons at once. Once you push in the front one, just touch the back one with your finger tip at the same time and it should go, cheers
