Do you think schoolteachers can fix their students lives? It wouldn’t matter if every teacher was an Einstein if there’s garbage in there’s garbage out. A cultural change is what’s needed
Too many of our public schools are funded out of property taxes in the US. This produces a tremendous disparity in the funding available to hire good teachers and give students and their teachers the equipment and facilities they need to produce the best student that can be had. The finer points can be argued with, but without these fundamental resources, we are left with a generational cycle of ill-educated parents producing ill-educated children. I first met Henry when he held a chair at Penn State, and I at JH. He has always impressed me with his unique take on the US and Canadian education systems and how they play into and are influenced by, the changing social climate, esp in the US. With his experience as a HS teacher, of study at Carnegi Melon, and teaching at Boston, Penn, and (for about 14 yrs, I think) at McMaster, he has a level of objectivity which is rare in North America today.
While relatively brief, this was a very informative and incredibly enlightening simplification of the belief systems and political culture in the United States, as they have unfolded during my lifetime. As a fifty year old man, I have spent my entire lifetime thus far, unlearning the perspectives I learned throughout my "schooling", in order to ultimately arrive in full agreement with the theories explored in this fifteen minute video.
Henry Giroux is so spot on with everything he says. I've been espousing and pointing out these problems and some solutions in this country for so long now. Thanks David for having such great guests!!
I had a number of excellent teachers in my Public School experience in the 60's and 70's, but one who stands out was a Social Studies teacher who often set up our class to discuss and debate current issues, not from our own view but from the perspective of randomly assigned alternate views. For example, when one of the big issues of the day was whether "Red" China should be admitted to membership in the U. N. we were assigned to debate the matter from the perspective of current U. N. members so we had to research how that particular Ambassador would argue the matter. I drew the "Soviet Ambassador" card while others in the class had to argue from the French, English, U. S. position, etc. We did similar exercises on racial matters, marijuana legalization, women's rights, and so on. Guess what? We all learned more than we would have ever learned about current issues than we would have learned if a teacher just stood in front of the class told us what to think. Many years later, when I was managing a business with about 1400 Unionized employees, we were having a difficult time working some things out so I remembered my High School days and did something similar in a Joint Labor-Management exercise. Union Stewards and Officers met with my management and supervisory staff and I told everyone to "take their Union or Management hats off" and then proposed a number of "grievance issues" that I made up and then told the people at the meeting to argue the matter, not from their own position, but from the position of the other party. It was an eye opener for all involved and resulted in a much better and more productive work environment. Like Atticus Finch said to Scout, "You cannot know another person until you walk around in his shoes." Well, you can't really know your own beliefs until you truly understand the beliefs of others. Critical thinking skills are "dangerous" to those who do not truly understand the how and why of their own belief systems. I choose to live a "dangerous" life in that regard.
When was that perfect time when education was about raising critically thinking individuals who would hold power accountable for their communities' well-being? I don't think education (especially mass education) was ever about that.

Oh my gosh, my heart just skipped a beat!👍👍👍
Knowledge is highly underrated! America goes for the loud people, the flashy people; not the smart people.
I immigrated from Germany when I was 18 and I can attest to the fact that having socialized medicine and having free education was so much better 😊❤
Aye, it’s a well known trait of Germans that they think Germans and Germany are so much better so you’ve no need to share.
Probably true though ♥️ I wouldn’t mind living in Germany myself
@@jimohara are you one of those pick up artists who specializes in negging? That insult about Germans think they're better is so rude, as if socialised medicine and free education is not a good thing.
We have universal healthcare and free education up to the end of highschool in Australia. It is way better than the American system where you get price gouged for healthcare.

I remember where I was in 1980 when Reagan won. It was an overwhelming sense of foreboding that Reagan would have horrible long term consequences. I knew we would be dealing with it for the rest of my life. I was depressed for weeks. I still believe you can point to him for our current issues.
The most depressing thing about Reagan is that he wasn't some political mastermind. Reagan was basically a talking head, a paid actor; and the powers that were behind him never went away.
I remember seeing Huckabee air messages in '06 after hearing some rather middle class christians speaking well of that grifter before launching into joyful end times banter themselves. My thought was I need to think of this moment ten years from now too. Ohhh boy.
Terrible as Reagan was, worse followed, and would almost be nice if we had a Nixon lead that damned party again.

No doubt! Trump ran on Reagan’s campaign, slogan and all. It was like watching a remake of a horrible movie.

Here's how we fix schools: teacher pay should be competitive with tech jobs at the K - 12 level. Make it more competitive for more highly educated job seekers.
Sure, if we learned NOTHING from our failed ways.
Everything does NOT have to be a competition. I fact, MOST people excel under cooperation and less stress. You can't design a society based on the few.
Do you think schoolteachers can fix their students lives? It wouldn’t matter if every teacher was an Einstein if there’s garbage in there’s garbage out. A cultural change is what’s needed
@@justadad6677 he implied paying teachers more, not making them fight each other
That may not solve the horrific teacher deficit problem in some urban public system like Philadelphia's which needs 500 teachers.
Schools should be paid for directly out of the state budget along with whatever federal help is available. For politicians who only care about what happens on their watch, you are the ones guilty of criminal negligence and no one else.
Well explained ideology, Best interview ever!!
The best analysis on US politics I have ever heard ... what a great mind !. Thank you.
I was in Sweden in the early 1980's when a discussion ensued on costly US education versus free socialized education there ~~ The Swede I was talking with stated " America's down fall will be that it is educating it's wealthiest not it's brightest " ~~ It is frightening watching this happen!

I graduated high school in 1966. From the beginning my education included Civics, the study of our Government and the principals that we are all in this together and everyone needs to cooperate to get things done. I had no idea how we have deteriorated to the "ME FIRST" today but that explains what is going on in Society. I am ashamed of how even "educated" people act today. I'm really sad to learn this and I hope it's not too late, but we have lost so much in the years since I left school. I'm not sure we can even recover that in the next generation. I hoped to leave this place better than I found it, but I'm increasingly afraid it won't be happening.
One of the best presentation of analysis , one of the best speakers, Thank you so much for interviewing Henry Giroux!!!

Giroux's reference at 16:56 is to Robert O. Paxton. Recommended: Paxton's *The Anatomy of Fascism.*
Cant have a democracy without an informed citizenry. Love it.
Henry is spot on in everything he says, about how we lost our sense of community and working together for the greater good, to the Gordon Gekko mindset, where greed is good, and the ideology is to get whatever you can however you can, and screw everyone else, and it all really began and escalated exponentially with Reagan, and ever since
Fantastic interview. This is the inherent problem with libertarianism. Aside from the built-in attitude of "eff you, got mine", libertarians shrug off all responsibility on society and government writ large, and puts the onus on individuals, which is both impactical and disingenuous.
Both Libertarians and Republicans talk the talk of the absolute sovereignty of the individual over the social responsibilities to the tribe of a democratic nation until the bottom falls out from under them. They don’t turn down unemployment benefits if they lose their job, they don’t think they should have to sell their assets to pay their medical bills, and they should be first in line for financial assistance if a natural disaster wipes them out. It’s all social Darwinism until they are the ones being culled from the herd, and that’s when it’s time to find a scapegoat.

This man is wonderful. Why don’t we have more people like him speaking out. He’s hit the nail on the head.
I’m so happy that I went school prior to the 70’s
I was taught in school to examine everything. I read 4 different newspapers for social studies everyday. And living in NYC in the 60’s you had a plethora of Newspapers that covered left, right and center views.
Why the eff do we still have politicians? A modern country should be led by eminent people with knowledge in social studies, economy, urbanization, social security, health care, etc. why do loud-mouthed ignorants who are only interested in their wallet and egos are leading the country?
He has a highly insightful and intelligent mind with the ability to convey his thoughts and opinions in a succinct and understandable way. I look forward to reading his books. Thanks David for having such great guests!!
Excellent interview! Really refocuses the truth of the moment.
Great interview David. That was enthralling
