I had been looking for a way to join two different colors together side by side, and it looks like this one would work if I use a color that matches the right side. The left side stitches are less noticeable. The piece I'm doing is not a garment, only a small flag for someone. Thank you, Nancy!

Thank you for this video, you made it look really easy! I just have one more question: is the seam invisible from both sides, or just the top? I plan to knit a poncho with a two-part hood that is sewn together at the end, and for that I need a stitch that is invisible when I have the hood on and when it's off.
It will be somewhat invisible on the opposite side however, I do have a suggestion. When you are doing the seam, rather than reaching over one stitch in to grab the smile stitch on the right piece, work the very edge smile stitch instead - just as you do for the frown stitch on the left side. This is super invisible because you are basically bumping the edges together - no overlap! The down side is that it's a bit of a flimsy seam so what I do is work it again on the wrong side. Hope this makes sense and I answered your question - Good luck!

I try to answer in 24 hours because I always assume someone is just sitting there stuck and in need of help. Okay, here is how I handle stripe seams and I call it "wiggle and jiggle" and this is how it works. Shift your color rows ever so gently to match the sides as best you can. This means that at times you will need to go under two ridges instead of one to create the illusion that they are lining up. This task is a little easier on stockinette but I've had great success doing it on garter stitch as well. Please let me know if my explanation has made sense or if I need to clarify. I'm thinking I should do a video on this at some point.....

Okay, what I’m trying to say is when you’re seaming and come to a new stripe, you may have to go under 2 smiles and 2 frowns to create the illusion that it’s lined up. Doing that will bump the rows just a bit without disrupting the flow of the seam. Play with it and I think you’ll get it. Keep me posted. 😉
Hi Jennifer! Technically, you can, but you mustn't pull the seam too tight. That said, there will be a subtle, visible ridge on the wrong side. Therefore, I have been known to duplicate the seam on the opposite side. Yes, it's an extra step, but it's worth it if the wrong side will be visible. Another plus is that it adds more stability to the seam. A “correctly” done garter stitch seam floats over the stitches, whereas a mattress stitch seam pulls the pieces together, resulting in a more visible ridge on the wrong side. Sorry for my wordy response. I hope I answered your question.

How would you seam up a sweater with a lacy edge - like a yarn over after the edge stitch on the right side (stockinette stitch) and with fine (#2) yarn? For a picture of the sweater search "Premier® Cloud Pullover" by Herrschners. The yarn overs every other row make it difficult to know where to seam it.
Hi Jo! I would use the garter stitch seam but because it will be somewhat flimsy, flip it over and do the same on the inside. If you do another sweater similar to this style, do a stockinette edge on the body pieces. It gives you a nice edge for seaming. Hope this helps :-)
Karena Lofton Hi Karena and thanks for contacting me. The first thing I would do is give it a try and see if you like how it looks with the colors meshing over each other. If you don’t, I would instead use the mattress stitch in stockinette method which uses the the running thread that falls between the selvage stitch and its neighbor. By doing it that way you’ll have more of a seam ridge on the backside but you won’t have colors crossing over. Experiment and see what looks better.
how do you do it when you want to stitch together the ends so the there is no frown or smile but the are sideways. I want to stitch together an infinity scarf. Thanks!
how do you sew together two different colored fabrics without the thread/yarn being obvious? The knitting I did is loose that you could see the other side.
Hi Pamela and thank you so much for contacting me with such a good question. If you don’t want your sewing thread to show, you will have to do the traditional mattress stitch seam as demonstrated on my “Invisible Mattress Stitch on Stockinette.” Unfortunately, doing that type of seam on garter stitch will form a dent on the right side and a selvage ridge on the wrong side. Another option would be to do the garter stitch seam but add a pop of a contrasting color to sew the seams. I’ve seen this done and it really adds something to the design. No doubt whatever method you chose will be lovely. I hope I answered your question. ☺️🧶
Hi Suzanne and thank you for contacting me. With regard to your question, it will make just the tiniest ridge on the back side. If you want it totally flat (I'm assuming this is for a blanket), work the same method however DO NOT move in one stitch but rather work the very edge smile and frowns that are literally on the edge.This will not produce a ridge and is virtually invisible however there is one drawback to doing it this way: flimsy seam. To make up for that, you will need to flip it over and do the exact same thing on the reverse side. Kind of a pain but the affect is lovely. Hope I helped. : - )

Always try to match the "points".One other thing, when I have to do this, I make sure that my rows line up in a way that allows the "valley" to be in the correct position before I bind off. In other words, if you are joining shoulder seams, you may have to work an extra row of knit to maintain the pattern over the shoulder. Does that make sense or am I confusing you?
Does anyone know if its possible not to use the end stitches when seaming garter stitch? Cause Im joining rows of striped garter stitch and the ends turned out mismatched since I slip the first stitch of a row and I'd really like to hide that :(
If you don't use the end stitches, it will become bulky. May I ask why you slipped the first stitch of the row? That's never a good idea on edges you need to seam.
Cause I'm a circular needle knitter and occasional scarf knitter lool. I found it strange that my first sweater was coming out with no problems :/ Do you think it won't come out as bad on a stockinette? Cause only a small part is garter but the main body is stockinette
Nicole Coppini - It's still going to be off a bit because slipped stitches are only worked every other row/round. That's why in the future you may want to only slip the edge stitches on scarves or similar garments that have an exposed edge.

Okay, what I’m trying to say is when you’re seaming and come to a new stripe, you may have to go under 2 smiles and 2 frowns to create the illusion that it’s lined up. Doing that will bump the rows just a bit without disrupting the flow of the seam. Play with it and I think you’ll get it. Keep me posted. 😉

Hi Jennifer! Technically, you can, but you mustn't pull the seam too tight. That said, there will be a subtle, visible ridge on the wrong side. Therefore, I have been known to duplicate the seam on the opposite side. Yes, it's an extra step, but it's worth it if the wrong side will be visible. Another plus is that it adds more stability to the seam. A “correctly” done garter stitch seam floats over the stitches, whereas a mattress stitch seam pulls the pieces together, resulting in a more visible ridge on the wrong side. How would you seam up a sweater with a lacy edge - like a yarn over after the edge stitch on the right side (stockinette stitch) and with fine (#2) yarn? For a picture of the sweater search "Premier® Cloud Pullover" by Herrschners. The yarn overs every other row make it difficult to know where to seam it.
Hi Jo! I would use the garter stitch seam but because it will be somewhat flimsy, flip it over and do the same on the inside. If you do another sweater similar to this style, do a stockinette edge on the body pieces. It gives you a nice edge for seaming. Hope this helps :-)

Would I still use this same method if I am joining two squares that are different colors for a blanket?
Karena Lofton Hi Karena and thanks for contacting me. The first thing I would do is give it a try and see if you like how it looks with the colors meshing over each other. If you don’t, I would instead use the mattress stitch in stockinette method which uses the the running thread that falls between the selvage stitch and its neighbor. By doing it that way you’ll have more of a seam ridge on the backside but you won’t have colors crossing over. Experiment and see what looks better.

how do you sew together two different colored fabrics without the thread/yarn being obvious? The knitting I did is loose that you could see the other side.
Hi Pamela and thank you so much for contacting me with such a good question. If you don’t want your sewing thread to show, you will have to do the traditional mattress stitch seam as demonstrated on my “Invisible Mattress Stitch on Stockinette.” Unfortunately, doing that type of seam on garter stitch will form a dent on the right side and a selvage ridge on the wrong side. Another option would be to do the garter stitch seam but add a pop of a contrasting color to sew the seams. I’ve seen this done and it really adds something to the design. No doubt whatever method you chose will be lovely. I hope I answered your question. ☺️🧶

Hi Suzanne and thank you for contacting me. With regard to your question, it will make just the tiniest ridge on the back side. If you want it totally flat (I'm assuming this is for a blanket), work the same method however DO NOT move in one stitch but rather work the very edge smile and frowns that are literally on the edge.This will not produce a ridge and is virtually invisible however there is one drawback to doing it this way: flimsy seam. To make up for that, you will need to flip it over and do the exact same thing on the reverse side. Kind of a pain but the affect is lovely. Hope I helped. : - )

Always try to match the "points".One other thing, when I have to do this, I make sure that my rows line up in a way that allows the "valley" to be in the correct position before I bind off. In other words, if you are joining shoulder seams, you may have to work an extra row of knit to maintain the pattern over the shoulder. Does that make sense or am I confusing you?

Does anyone know if its possible not to use the end stitches when seaming garter stitch? Cause Im joining rows of striped garter stitch and the ends turned out mismatched since I slip the first stitch of a row and I'd really like to hide that :(
If you don't use the end stitches, it will become bulky. May I ask why you slipped the first stitch of the row? That's never a good idea on edges you need to seam.
Cause I'm a circular needle knitter and occasional scarf knitter lool. I found it strange that my first sweater was coming out with no problems :/ Do you think it won't come out as bad on a stockinette? Cause only a small part is garter but the main body is stockinette
Nicole Coppini - It's still going to be off a bit because slipped stitches are only worked every other row/round. That's why in the future you may want to only slip the edge stitches on scarves or similar garments that have an exposed edge.
