Homer, yes, very sustainable. This spot was over 120 miles off shore and has never been dove by anybody but myself or my crew. I think we've only been there 3 times over the years. Spearfishing itself is sustainable but amongst the global decline in the ocean fish populations and the decimation of reefs everywhere including Florida, commercial fishing of any kind isn’t sustainable in my informed scientific opinion. I always thought I was old-school but now I’m thinking I’m even more so. you should only eat fish if you can get out and get it yourself. I applaud Dan, he could be long lining if he wanted to. Would be way easier for him to longline but he doesn’t he’s the man actually he risks his life just to make his craft more sustainable.

Nothing easy about diving 262 feet.. Tons of training is required to go thag deep and once your that deep you have to breath in different gasses and shit because oxygen in that deep of water can kill you.. And the knowledge to not get bent.. with decompression sickness

B31, with the right equipment and multiple blow off mixes, a very rough estimate in that depth is about 3 minutes of Deco for every minute of bottom time. Hey Andrew, it really comes down to experience, knowing when to take the shot and when not to. In case I don't stone a fish, I try to hit it hard enough to grab the spear or to shoot it again. In situations where the visibility is good and there aren't deep holes or wreckage for it to swim out of reach into, you can hit it hard and follow until the opportunity to double tap it happens. It's a learning curve, like everything else. Best. Dan
Glen, I do love that wreck. I got the Loran numbers that were within a mile or so probably 20 years ago and spent many long days and hours looking for it. Was cruising through that area one morning on a mirror flat day and saw a pod of porpoises maybe 1/2 mile away. Ran over and investigated and within 15 minutes, found the wreck. Pretty great day! Jim, lol, that thing was a tank...solid glass stringers and transom, twin diesels, separate fuel and battery systems, hell I even had two complete new back up steering lines made up for it. We'd spend a week on it and run 600 miles, total fuel burn was like 200 gallons. I still miss her but I don't miss the 6k cruise on her! Best, Dan

Super cool video Dan! On my gun I’ve got the spear connected to my gun so if the fish isn’t stoned it can’t run off with my spear. How do you ensure that doesn’t happen since it doesn’t look like you’re connected to your spears at all?
Thanks Paul. With free shafting, it's all about shot placement, the whole idea is to "stone" the fish and if you fail to do that, to hit the fish so hard that it limits their ability to flee. Then a double tap from spear #2 will end it quickly. It def isn't practical to free shaft in some ares but where it works, it works well. Best, Dan

Scuba divers who spearfish spend so much time getting their amazing certifications and training, they sit in classrooms for hours and spend as much a two whole hours in the pool at a time. They don't have any time left for working out. And many of them are smokers, as well as overeaters. I think both ways of spearfishing are valid, one is highly trained fitness freaks who pursue their sport in spite of the dangers of black-out, boats hitting them and scuba divers spearing them. The scuba diver-spearfishermen are mainly garbage collectors and ditch diggers who spend most of their time eating donuts and playing video games. It's just a different sport, that's all.

Rock, every minute of bottom time requires roughly an additional 4 minutes of high O2 Deco. On an open Ocean dive like this, you can't depend on boat/surface Deco gas, so everything has to be carried by the divers. You should also each carry enough Deco gas to supply your buddy with in case of an emergency. This limits your bottom time to just a few minutes, unless you want to carry huge tanks and pay a long long deco time penalty. That's the short answer! Best, Dan

What a shitty way to kill a fish that big, that has lived that long. Freedive instead. 134 feet is doable. Hunting with tanks is the most unethical thing you can do in the water.
Jorge, it wasn't 134 feet, it was about 250'. Hard to free dive that. Remember it was well over 100 miles offshore using a one band free shaft, not a 3 band gun with buoy gear 2 miles off the beach. Lol. Thanks for watching, Best, Dan

Hi Amy, yeah the species is right and the weight is probably 5 pounds light if anything. He was weighed on a certified fish house scale 4-5 days after being speared so I'm sure he was much heavier when he came out of the water! Best, Dan

I spearfish all the time and it takes balls , I dive 50-60 feet ,,,, and I look up and I honestly get worried sometimes, sometimes sharks come by and get frisky , these people don’t know what the fuck it takes to get in that water and hunt a fish like a real man, not with a button on a boat! Fucking people have no respect bro. They think it’s easy lmao 😂 wish I could see em out there in a bad storm or under water with some sharks 🦈 that would be a site to see!

B31, with the right equipment and multiple blow off mixes, a very rough estimate in that depth is about 3 minutes of Deco for every minute of bottom time. This could vary significantly due to many variables. This should never be attempted without years of experience and proper training.Thanks for watching. Best, Dan

How do the non stoned shot fish not swim of with the spear if there is no line attached?
Hey Andrew, it really comes down to experience, knowing when to take the shot and when not to. In case I don't stone a fish, I try to hit it hard enough to grab the spear or to shoot it again. In situations where the visibility is good and there aren't deep holes or wreckage for it to swim out of reach into, you can hit it hard and follow until the opportunity to double tap it happens. It's a learning curve, like everything else. Best. Dan

Glen, I do love that wreck. I got the Loran numbers that were within a mile or so probably 20 years ago and spent many long days and hours looking for it. Was cruising through that area one morning on a mirror flat day and saw a pod of porpoises maybe 1/2 mile away. Ran over and investigated and within 15 minutes, found the wreck. Pretty great day! Jim, lol, that thing was a tank...solid glass stringers and transom, twin diesels, separate fuel and battery systems, hell I even had two complete new back up steering lines made up for it. We'd spend a week on it and run 600 miles, total fuel burn was like 200 gallons. I still miss her but I don't miss the 6k cruise on her! Best, Dan

Super cool video Dan! On my gun I’ve got the spear connected to my gun so if the fish isn’t stoned it can’t run off with my spear. How do you ensure that doesn’t happen since it doesn’t look like you’re connected to your spears at all?
Thanks Paul. With free shafting, it's all about shot placement, the whole idea is to "stone" the fish and if you fail to do that, to hit the fish so hard that it limits their ability to flee. Then a double tap from spear #2 will end it quickly. It def isn't practical to free shaft in some ares but where it works, it works well. Best, Dan

Hi Jeff, I can explain. Scuba divers who spearfish spend so much time getting their amazing certifications and training, they sit in classrooms for hours and spend as much a two whole hours in the pool at a time. They don't have any time left for working out. And many of them are smokers, as well as overeaters. I think both ways of spearfishing are valid, one is highly trained fitness freaks who pursue their sport in spite of the dangers of black-out, boats hitting them and scuba divers spearing them. The scuba diver-spearfishermen are mainly garbage collectors and ditch diggers who spend most of their time eating donuts and playing video games. It's just a different sport, that's all.

Why the hurry to leave?
Rock, every minute of bottom time requires roughly an additional 4 minutes of high O2 Deco. On an open Ocean dive like this, you can't depend on boat/surface Deco gas, so everything has to be carried by the divers. You should also each carry enough Deco gas to supply your buddy with in case of an emergency. This limits your bottom time to just a few minutes, unless you want to carry huge tanks and pay a long long deco time penalty. That's the short answer! Best, Dan

Nope, I'm a Permitted commercial spear fisherman. No bycatch, no line or nets left in the water. Very fresh fish supplied to consumers. Working 100 or more miles off shore.
