First published in 1977, Traveller is a science fiction RPG in the vein of The Expanse or Battlestar Galactica. Most who played the original game back in the day remember the robust character creation system where if you push too far and get unlucky with the dice, you can die before you even start playing.

Ah... the session where Matthew threw curveball after curveball at us until our brains melted, a.k.a. the "Wait! What!?" episode.
The session went from live love laugh to holy shit this is very serious.
Force Reconnaissance Uniform Intelligence and Telemetry Roll-up.
It went from Traveller to Twilight Zone. All that was missing was the intro music and Serling's narrative.

At first I thought, is this some sort of mind device that one of the two planets is using to fool our team into revealing information about their ship and the ship they want to take. Then I thought, is this a Q scenario where an omnipotent being has grabbed these two ships and placed them in space next to each other? Ending on the revelation of a murder, interesting. Looking forward to the next show.
I picture Puffer as more of a Warrant Officer. I know they don't exist mechanics-wise in Traveller but it just seems to suit his character.
Look, as much as I absolutely love this game system, show/story, and cast, I am absolutely GOBSMACKED that this episode wasn’t title Fruit Rollup. And opportunity was missed here, Naish.
Great episode. Phenomenal cast. I truly hope there is a long term place for Traveller on the Network.
I've just recently come across Traveller as a game system, and I really enjoy it in concept, and it was thanks to Seth I even came across it. So, to be here and watching/listening to the actual gameplay is fantastic, especially with Seth in it. I'm really enjoying the story Matthew is putting together, and I stayed up well past my usual bedtime because I was so wrapped up in the story. I also really like the Characters and the people playing them. if I don't finish this series over the next couple nights, I'll definitely finish it on my next day off.
I'm thoroughly enjoying this story. Since Seth never gets to be a player, I hope he is enjoying this as much as I am!
"Fruit Roll-up" does sound like a phone operating system. Ellison is probably running Jelly Bean, tho
When the ship was created, the OS was Jelly Bean. And it ran fine. Unfortunately they were forced to update the OS without option to refuse… and now everything happens super slowly with a cosmic ‘beach ball’ for decades, which is why they’ve been gone 74 years and think it’s only 3 months.

Matthew’s timing of cliffhangers is truly impressive.

The fact that you called it “computer time” makes me think of David Foster Wallace’s “This is Water” speech. He tells a joke/parable about an older fish swimming past some younger fish and telling them to enjoy the water. They turn to each other and ask, “What the hell is water?”

Matthew! Awesome Show! I'm hooked. I can't picture anybody other than the cast playing those parts in a live-action version. Alicia is Gigi and Sydney IS Artemis. My dog is also, coincidentally, named Artemis and anytime anyone says her name on the show she looks up at the speakers and wags her tail. A stamp of approval in my book

This is my favorite kind of sci-fi scenario. 👏 Every time there’s a trippy story revelation i’m hearing the Next Generation ‘tension music just before the commercial’ music cue. With Picard or Laforge looking worried in the foreground 😂

The "ship specs r way better now" is a good argument. I had a pc with less than a gig of ram back in a day. Now ive got 16G. I can run giant games demanding lots of resources my old pc couldn't. And it takes up the same space. Its literally future tech

I can understand the kate's computers getting affected by the timey-wimey stuff going on (it likely cross-referenced against the ghost ship and priotises that thing's data as its a naval vessel), but I don't understand how the physically printed media (speaker's books, the j-drive manufacturing date) could be affected?
I suspect there's something else in addition to timey-wimey stuff going on; possibly psionics? (they are on the fringes of imperial space in the spinward marches, the zhodani are practically next door)

I like to think due to bureaucracy, the painfully slow process of militaries adopting new technology standards, and backwards compatibility with lower-tech worlds; all spaceships are required to have a paper tape reader. Something akin to punched tape or magnetic tape readers of early computers. Colloquially referred to as "fruit roll-ups"; though the meaning of the word is lost to time.
and the Admiral Adama-Battlestar Galactica 2.0 protocol - insisting on staying closer to analog so we're less prey and have backup systems ready to go.
,I played Traveller from 1979 to 1985. Then a little of the Traveller New Era from 2016 to 2018. I love traveller.

Skid I wonder if we knew the same people at USC. I went to college there in the 90’s. Right when Matthew mentioned the guy painting his wall I was like my buddy Chris did that with poster board and then you told the story. I think he did Arizona though. I kept telling you should change the address because it was an apartment. I kept wondering if everyone with fake ID’s went to the same bar in Pueblo how it go down.
On a Traveller note this stream solidified my need to purchase the updated rules. Great series so far.

Really enjoyable. This and "Time for Chaos" go to the top of the queue when they appear. Does Traveller have anything like a Psychology or Insight role to get a read on an NPC? Some of that's ship's crew are setting off warning bells for me.
That would probably be the Recon skill, probably rolled with Social Standing or Education. The skills are pretty broad in application depending on which characteristic you use with it, despite how many skills there are (like Gun Combat can be used for both firing guns and repairing them, with just a change in characteristic).

Fake ID stories too - love it :D Though I is old - and growing up I had a full beard - a rarity in late 80s/early 90s and a serious demeanor -- and i was bloody good at looking over-worked & underpaid -- used to grab 12 pks on weekends and was never once carded - go figure. Now-a-days while 50 is a fast fading memory - getting carded tickles me to no end!

I love Gigi's idea of using Steward skills to glean info! That skillset involves both attending to and managing multiple races and personality types in a limited space and making everyone as comfortable as reasonally possible. A good Steward could arguably be used like Streetwise but shipboard...

My guess is the Navy switched all the dates and the book knowing that the crew would jump back in time.
My guess is they jumped into a section of space that is temporal quicksand. A natural phenomenon or a side effect of the Ellisons ‘new’ jump drives.

Hey Matt, what program do you use to film your game?
DREAD is one of my favorite rpgs for good narratives. I've run it almost a dozen times with a ton of different groups and it's always an amazing time.
Enjoying the story and the group. As the story goes, since the ship was designed to be in for extended period, the jump drive likely was a prototype, saying that, the misjump may have had a different effect.
to help convince them I would have told them their names and ranks *I believe that it would have been included in the briefing package

I have to say, Gigi going full-Guinan was just awesome. I could easily picture her trying to set up her version of 10-Forward on the ghost ship.
I never had a fake ID. But when I graduated high school back in 01. I moved from a small town to a big city to goto school. And the college didn't have dorms but they went through another company to rent out apartments, and they would cram 4 people I. A 2 bedroom 2 bathroom. And one of my roommates made fake IDs. And one of the other roommates bought one off of him. And he would scan your current ID and just change the birthday. We'll the one roommate who had one went to get gas and had to use a check(I was with him when this happened). And he forgot his real ID but had that one went to use it. And they were buying it until he said "it's a fake ID but only difference was the birthday." And next thing you know he is explaining it to the cops
jumps are supposed to have a signature that even basic sensors can detect (if close enough)
