…they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

I love the description of the features of the Magi by St. Bede the Venerable, 8th Century Historian. He gave each magus distinctive physical characteristics:
Melchior - Brought gold, a white haired man.
Casper - Brought incense, a young beardless man.
Balthasar - Brought Myrrh, a dark, swarthy complexion.
One of the messages of the feast day is that Christianity is a faith for all people, not just a chosen few.
The three gifts of course have a profound spiritual meaning: gold as a symbol of kingship on earth, frankincense (an incense) as a symbol of deity, and myrrh (an embalming oil) as a symbol of death.
In prayer and worship on this 12th day of Christmas we too bring our gifts to Jesus and acknowledge Him as Our Lord and God. Amen!
