Why will it shock me? I've been to Paphos twice in the past twelve months - yes, it has got touristy theme pubs and bars on the harbour; yes, it has got its clubs and "lively" night scene; yes, it has got the sort of tourist shops that sell all the same stuff. All very similar to popular tourist resorts all over Europe. Explore off the harbour - literally a few minutes walk from Dionysos Central Hotel and you'd find tràditional, family run tavernas more popular with locals than tourists and bars without a theme or loud music. The real Paphos and the real Cyprus are not shocks but part of everyday life if you just venture away from the tourist path
