    I am an insurance agent licensed in all states. So I found this interesting. It's not as confusing for me as it is for most people. You have 2 periods of time. One starts at the time a rental period begins (Turo guest takes possession of the vehicle) and the other period is when a vehicle is NOT on a rental. If you only had a few vehicles also used for your own personal use more often than not, and they are registered to you personally, then personal auto insurance covers those times NOT on a rental period. It's not that personal auto insurance "does not allow" the car on the policy it is the fact that a BUSINESS policy, such as Turo's host insurance, is the only coverage that applies during a rental period. When you start to talk about fleets of several to hundreds of cars, you need a business policy, since the purpose of having multiple vehicles is to run a business. This new option for Turo hosts sounds like an idea whose time has come and for $79 a month it is a very good deal, provided that it is a vehicle not primarily used for personal use. So it all comes down to usage and purpose of usage. The biggest thing to understand is that a personal auto policy DOES NOT cover any vehicle during a rental period (when you are a Turo host).
    The other thing about Uber and Lyft and other rideshare is that there is also NO COVERAGE from the personal auto policy from the time you accept a trip until the time you complete the trip. Rideshare Gap, which covers you during the time you are logged in and UNTIL you accept a trip, and again after the trip while waiting for another trip, is an added coverage that is needed to have coverage while logged in but have not accepted a trip yet. Many states that have rideshare gap also require certain limits of liability (ask your agent for more details) Some states do not have RideShare gap at all.
    Also, if you are reading this and you use your car for Uber, Lyft, Postmates, DoorDash, Instacart, etc., be aware of what deductible will apply if you are in an accident (and at fault, or other driver is at fault and has no insurance). Based on my recent research, most Rideshare companies now provide ONLY liability for bodily injury or property damage to a third party while on a trip for them, and may DO NOT cover any damage to your car. BEFORE working for ANY rideshare network, make sure you know if there is any coverage for damage to your car FROM THE RIDESHARE COMPANY, and, if so, how much your deductible would be. Always call your insurance company and ask questions. Since many rideshare companies no longer provide coverage for any damage to your vehicle while making a trip for them, and your personal auto policy also does not cover it either, a commercial policy is needed.
    While rideshare companies ask for proof of personal auto insurance, it is misleading and often leads to a complete misunderstanding, as there is NO coverage from a personal auto policy from the time you accept a trip until you complete the trip, and in other cases you are not covered when logged in and not on a trip. So when they ask for proof of personal auto insurance, they lead you to believe that coverage applies, but it does NOT!
    This is an excellent insurance program. This coverage makes sense for those who ONLY use a car for rideshare and not for personal use.
    And yes, the answer from EVERY personal auto policy will be NO COVERAGE applies during the rental period unless there is a commercial component to your policy. There are some commercial policies that cover you both for personal use and for business use. The suggestion to contact Lula and ask questions is indeed great advice!
    For consumers renting from Turo, the idea to understand is that when you have an auto insurance policy, coverage for liability insurance covers you while driving any vehicle, this coverage is for bodily injury or property damage to a third party if you are at fault in an accident, so it is important to understand that your personal auto policy covers you FOR LIABILITY while you are driving your own car, a moving truck, or a rental car, a borrowed vehicle, and it can be any non owned vehicle or a moving truck, whether owned by a Turo host or a car or truck rental agency. Coverage for damage to a vehicle, however, is not as cut and dry and NEVER applies from a personal policy to cover damage to a moving truck, it is only for rental of a private passenger vehicle, which is what Turo hosts are renting.

    Im not seeing the problem or where the confusion lies. You use your own insurenace when accidents happen when the car is not rented, and use the Turo insurance when there is an accident while the vehicle is rented. No need for commercial policies and things like that when you only have a few cars.

    This sounds a lot like ABI. From my experience ABI seems to be a little less expensive, but I do like the idea of a plan that covers you if you use the car for business and personal. I read below in another comment that Liberty Mutual offers 50/50 coverage, so that may be something to look into for some hosts.

    • @meltdownblitz
      @meltdownblitz ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Liberty mutual is crap. They called me and essentially said they do not provide insurance to individuals who are not able to park all their vehicles on their property with an exception of 1 or max 2 on the street because they have been getting too many claims with vehicles parked on the street. For larger vehicle fleets, you should avoid LB unless your able to park your entire fleet on your property. I told them i was able to park about 10 of my 14 cars on my property in my driveway and they denied and wouldn't offer me coverage.

    • @Reverend-Race-Horsey

      Lula is better because you can get 350 miles instead of ABIs 250! Also ABI is troublesome to work with. ABI doesn't provide sufficient documentation to provide to the DMV. You have to request ABI to call your state's DMV to provide more information so the DMV can confirm your insurance, this process took me 6 months! ABI has too many customers, so Lula sounds like it'll be better. I'll utilize Lula for my newer cars. 🚘

    I guess I have essentially two separate questions. I'd like to know will they be partnering with any GPS company like ABI does to monitor the mileage cap? I'm also curious about specifically Michigan operation. There are certain things about ABI I didn't like. Finding I have to change to a specific GPS and more importantly is the cost difference are concerns.
    They advertise a low price for everyone except for when it comes to Michigan and the no fault laws. We end up not saving really anything at all and our pricing is nowhere near what they claim or advertise.

    one problem is that geico/state farm/ usaa/ traverlers insurance doesnt see ride-share as legal car rental business. when enterprise or avis run out of cars to rent to customers that need cars for vacation or insurance claims accident, they tell they customer they will not honor ride-share rent receipts. i have came across this problem many times, so when a customer rents from me on turo, i have to give the insurance company a business car-rental receipt that shows my dealership name instead of turo. when enterprise runs out of car, the insurance adjuster looks on google or yelp for car rental companys not turo.

    Seems almost laughable that Lula says they want to meet the needs of ride sharing hosts in the best way and then ignore the way that most host want insurance - covereage during rentals (usually from Turo or other ride share platforms) with complete personal coverage when not renting. This ORP almost seems like a joke. So, if I want to add a car to my fleet that's for sale two states over and I want to drive it back to my base city and it's 400 miles away, seems like Lula has nothing for me because their carrier could claim it wasn't being used commercially and it was driven more than 300 miles. I would argue, yes, procuring it was part of the off rental need and next time I'll find one that's closer. Or if it was 290 miles away does that mean for the first month the ORP only covers ten miles? Their program leaves much to be desired and keeps evading the main need the majority of hosts would want: FULL COVERAGE OFF RENTAL PERIODS, whether or not it's for commercial or personal use.
