I was pretty sad when Man U signed Ronaldo actually because I knew it meant Cavani would get benched. He was so good last season and didn't deserve to be replaced essentially.

It was the dumbest decision the board has made in the past year or so (besides not sacking Ole). We had Elanga, Amad and Greenwood all next in line for forward roles and Sancho coming in with Cavani to tutor them. And then we bought a 36 year old, tactically incompatible, dressing room upsetting forward who can't be dropped. Stupid!

@@tobiogunsina8426 I think a tactically adept manager makes ronaldo work. It was very much an impulsive signing but if we had a top manager, that shouldn't matter. The issue is that cavani was the only forward we had who wasn't unbelievably lazy off the ball and now he's not in the team. Bruno runs about a lot but doesn't turn the ball over very often.

@@tobiogunsina8426 dude... Talk about how the club made a wrong decision to sign Ronaldo when he wasn't actually needed without dissing arguably the greatest footballer of all time lying on your couch. I agree the motive behind the signing of Ronaldo wasn't purely technical. But I'm stoked by how people simply forget the name he made because he isn't in good shape at the age of 36. I mean come on... This is about the same age the legend Ronaldinho retired. I get why people have a concern about why the team doesn't seem like they are glued together now that there's a striker who doesn't press at all. Point taken. But no one seems to appreciate the fact he's scoring goals which essentially what his job is.

love the discussion, but a part of me wishes JJ could have been on the podcast as well, given his defense of Ole last episode. I suppose I should be satisfied with his excellent breakdown of the game in another video, tho I do worry for how frustrated he seemed to be with the way United played, almost like a teacher disappointed by the results of a troubled student they really believed in. Not sure if he's a supporter but if so I do sympathesise. While I'm glad that Liverpool (my team) did well, I can imagine how crushed I would feel if they had lost like United did (terribly), especially with a squad of that potential. I hope in any case that JJ is doing fine and i look forward to his cheerful and erudite analysis in a future episode :)

I think he supports a Scottish team that I can’t remember how to spell. But I think JJ just wanted to believe in Ole because there were some bright spots, and I think in that video even he understood that they might have to fire him. I think he’ll be more than fine, he doesn’t seem to support any team in the prem very much. But I did only respond to say that he was sorely missed in this podcast, I think him and Alex could’ve added to the conversation a lot.

Would highly recommend watching that video if you haven’t, it’s probably one of the funniest tifo irl videos ever. He roasted Ole and United’s performance pretty hard and deservedly so, I’d say.

The worrying thing, was I'm pretty sure Liverpool didn't get out of 3rd gear, and I'm also sure they strolled through the second half. But to add yo that, it's literally been coming all season. The Cristiano Ronaldo transfer, that move from the Manchester United board was purely because of the fact that Ronaldo is a club legend. Everyone knew from the start that Man utd didn't buy Ronaldo due to technical reasons, because they didn't actually need him. The only reason is so that he DOESN'T wear the blue badge. I mean, the transfer unfolded in like hours and was completely unexpected, there was no reason or any sort of plan to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United. If he was linked to any other club (take for example Chelsea or a move back to Madrid) then Man utd would never have approached Ronaldo. Verdict: There are 0 tactical or technical reasons to bring Ronaldo, only that he is an icon of the club and obviously one of the greatest player of all time

Could Pep have convinced Ronaldo to press more or would he have played to Ronaldo's strengths at the detriment of the team?

Good point by Seb. Lopetegui is one of the names I thought of after doing some Googling around for potentially good managers for long term. The question that some United fans are still asking is "who would you hire if we sack Ole? There's only Conte and Zidane" which is very short-sighted and limiting. Be honest with yourselves - managers like Klopp and Tuchel were not mentioned or branded in the same breath as Pep today before they joined their respective clubs. But these guy have new ideas, these guys have mileage, credentials, and potential. Of course for every Tuchel there's an Emery, but the point is that the choices are not limited to just Conte and Zidane. The minimum criteria for a United manager should be someone who has won domestic titles at decent level (the Norwegian is not that level), made a dent in Europe (doesn't have to win but challenged the big boys like Ten Hag has), and has a proven record of improving tactical aspects of players (in the Sevilla examples Seb pointed out).
Which segues to the other point Seb mentioned - the structure within the club is dated and not fit for purpose of any more than short-term success, at best. Data analyst? Football director? It's 2021 already and the board were happily announcing these things like they're groundbreaking roles that no other clubs thought of. The whole club was and still is a mess, Ole's feel good canvas was just a veil the board put over our eyes. I never liked how quickly the board gave Ole the permanent contract, I remained unconvinced in his first full season, and became fully pessimistic after the Europa final.

Maguire is still a good defender. He has had toooo many good games. He does the basics really well.
I still see Maguire as a part of the solution and not the problem.
    Why?
1 Maguire is a tall, strong, slow, no-nonsense defender.
2 Maguire is really good at low blocks. Perfectly suited for bottom table EPL sides. Or non-possession based sides.
3 If a manager/team buys him and plays him in a high-pressure, high-defensive line, blame the manager and club. Don’t blame Maguire.
4 Let me repeat. Don’t buy the slowest, heaviest CB to play him in a fast-attacking system. If so, don’t blame the CB.
    Defense System
Have you heard of a solo-goal? Yes, it is possible.
Have you heard of a solo-defense? No?
Then, don’t blame a solo/single player for defensive issues. If 6 or 7 Liverpool players suddenly barge into United D and have a shootout, what can ONE MAGUIRE DO ALONE?
Meanwhile, Rashford and Greenwood are taking morning walks at the speed of a 50 year old. 🤦‍♂️
Yes Shaw/Maguire failed, but they failed trying. Many of the other players, failed standing or walking.
Defense is always, 4 on 3, 2 on 2, 1 on1. It is never 6 on 3. It has to be 6 on 6. If you think only defenders defend, that is not EPL.
    INVISIBLE RECEIVERs
McTominay and Fred were hiding behind Liverpool mid when Maguire/Lindelof had the ball. This forces useless long-ball play.
Even if the odd ball finds Ronaldo, he would be in an off-side position.
    Conclusion
I am an Harry Maguire fan so maybe I am over zealous in supporting him. I think he would have become a legend at Leicester or Hull City or Sheffield. He is like Ryan Shawcross, Rober Huth, Ron Vlaar, Wes Morgan. He is old school.
Yes, I agree with the critics, maybe he does not suit United or top attacking teams, Maguire’s biggest mistake perhaps was to join United.
He is really good at basics, very strong, very physical, great tackles, good positioning, intelligent player.
He is bad only when compared to Van Dijk, Ramos, Pique, Hummels, Kompany, Chiellini, John Terry, or Thiago Silva.

The reason why Utd know how to play counter-attacking football is largely because they have been trained by Jose Mourinho to do so. As a coach, OGS's tactical ineptitude is well-known. He may be very good at man-management, he is just not an elite coach who can set his team up tactically at the key matches. It was shown since Utd got kicked out of the Champion league group stage, and should be evident to all since the loss at the cup final last season.
But the issue runs deeper: we have a culture of mediocrity since Fergie retired from top to bottom - something that Klopp described as "the adult version of Disneyland" in 2014. As a fan, I cannot see the club winning any biggest trophy for a long time unless there are changes from top to bottom.

  • @SkullSnax

It’s sad what’s happening now with Ole and United. I think it probably is his time to go, there was always the dilemma in supporting Ole that you know he’s probably not the guy to win trophies and take a United back to the glory days, but also understand what he’s doing for the club is important and he needs time to see it through. It’s less about trophies and more about undoing the damage to the club that has occurred since Sir Alex left. Everything from the Frankenstein’s monster of a squad, to the modernisation behind the scenes that Van Gaal started implementing before Mourinho tore it down at great expense to the club.
I think it’s probably close to time, and if there were a more obvious replacement available it might have already happened. Despite large parts of the fan base clamouring for anybody new or different without thought for suitability, the managers own wants and needs, or wether they’re culturally the right fit for the club. The next appointment cannot just be another Chelsea type who will come in, burn the place down and leave.

Thanks for this guys, it's a very well balanced look at what's a very complicated situation. The key thing that concerns me about sacking Solskjaer now and bringing in anyone else (regardless of who that might be), is that it's overwhelmingly an emotional and short-term decision rather than a long-sighted or calculated one - not unlike bringing back a certain ageing forward. Like you say, none of the options that are available right now are necessarily the right fit, and I can't shake the feeling that in the long run, doing that will cause more problems than it solves. For what it's worth I had a similar feeling when Van Gaal was sacked and Mourinho replaced him - less so post-Mourinho because he'd thrown the toys out of the pram and was all but begging them to sack him by the end.
I'd be in a very small minority now, but I still think Solskjaer can get more out of this squad (and thus wouldn't sack him yet) if a couple of key issues are resolved. Namely, getting in an experienced and contemporary coach (not manager, coach) to work within and augment the setup they have, and more importantly finding a way to bite the Ronaldo bullet and drop him as they have with Pogba (regardless of what is said about it externally).
For me, the Everton game was both the epitome and trigger of the situation United find themselves in at the moment. In the first half, with Cavani up top and Martial on the left, the team looked well organized (by recent standards), was holding on to the ball and creating decent chances. They looked largely in control, barring a couple of half-decent chances afforded to Everton that were well dealt with. However, after half time, when Ronaldo and Sancho came on to replace those two, that entire structure disintegrated and suddenly there was gaping holes all over the pitch. I'm not saying that United would have definitely won that game had that change not happened, but there's no denying that it created a opening for Everton to take the game on.
I don't know if things would have gone differently had both Martial and Cavani (and Varane for that matter) been available after the international break, but if United had won that game there wouldn't have been nearly as much pressure to not drop Ronaldo as needed going forward. Instead with the draw and Sir Alex's comments in private being made public, the entire narrative after the fact was "if Ronaldo had started there's no way they'd have lost". That game is what made him undroppable, and everything that's happened since (in my opinion) has spiralled from it.
Solskjaer is in an impossible position at the moment, and that probably means he will get the sack, and the board will make another ill-advised short term appointment and we'll be having this conversation again in one to two years time. But I can't help but think it doesn't have to be this way, and it's gonna take some enormous balls from Ole and a lot of faith from the board to avoid it.

You're absolutely spot on, especially the bit about ole being in an impossible dilemma. While he certainly can be blamed for the formation they played, the absolutely shambolic pressing 'strategy' they employed etc. it seems that the fault for many of the long-term problems surrounding the club (the irrationally short-term transfer policies, the fact that ole himself as acted a caretaker manager for so long without a world-class replacement) lie squarely on the upper management of the club. If I were an united fan I wouldn't be furious at Ole so much as angry at the club's total failure to even hold a candle to the heights of the Ferguson era.

As a Juventus fan, it was obvious that United wouldn’t be able to accommodate Ronaldo and his needs. They were a team still under construction who were attempting to fix the imbalance in their squad, which was in turn magnified once Ronaldo joined. I was honestly surprised Tifo didn’t touch on this when he signed. Pirlo had to tailor the team to cover for Ronaldo’s deficiencies (lack of pressing, lack of EFFICIENT pressing, and defending) to maximize his output. The result was that he was Serie A’s top goal scorer but our team was weak defensively and let in a lot of goals on the counter. I give Pirlo a lot of credit for managing that difficult situation with some decent results. Ronaldo needed to go to a team with a solid foundation that could service him and capitalize on the attacking side of his game. (*Cough* City)

It isnt coaching, it is selecting too many players that don't offer enough defensively. Ronaldo, rashford and greenwood in the game against liverpool, could not be a more obvious error. No other top teams play so many ineffective defenders, you cant coach rashford and greenwood to press and defend like firmino and jota just like you can't trust them to defend effectively against the best pair of attacking fullbacks in the world.

It is a bit revisionist to attack United for not signing Pep or Klopp or whoever. When at the time they were either not interested or unavailable. Every time United has needed a new manager, there has been a lack of viable options that best suited the team. Conte or Zidane, as much as I respect them may not necessarily fit. Ideally I would have loved, Marcelo Gallardo or Erik Ten Hag even Julen Lopetegui and Imanol Alguacil could work. Their current squads (minus Ronaldo) and style of play are a lot closer to what United currently have.
The make up of squad United have isn't suited to Conte's 3-5-2, unless he is willing to change formation. United is a squad, predominantly made up of young players with potentially good academy players coming through. United always seemed to forced into making a decision, there never seems to a coherent plan. That's why our managerial appointments always swing viciously from one style to another.

Maybe United have too much faith in him, I didn’t even watch football much till recently and the moment I saw United I knew he wouldn’t last. The only issue is who will replace him but that’s not much of an issue. Really the whole staff needs to be refreshed now, especially the people in charge of buying players.

It’s actually tragic that they signed Ronaldo and they did it for the reasons stated. United for their flaws were actually quite decent to watch last year. Such a shame to not continue the development of some of the best young footballers about. I was already struggling with Ronaldo playing all the time and the last straw was him kicking Curtis Jones. Maybe Conte would be good if he had the minerals to bench him. I’d worry for the many wingers in the United squad though..

    • @Irfan87
      @Irfan87 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think it's Conte who intends to stay short term, we must also consider that is the nature of Serie A. And he left Inter cos of the mountain of debt they were in, all the players loved him though. Pretty much the same with Juve. And Chelsea, well it's Abramovich, that's all you need to know.

    • @WOOOPdoctorFROGhere
      @WOOOPdoctorFROGhere 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Irfan87 correct. Conte isn't the one deciding to leave after two years. He leaves clubs when they go back on their promises, because he's got integrity. Something Solskjaer lacks. Chelsea promised him Lukaku, failed and got Morata. Inter had a project, but then the money run out and they told him they'd be selling lukaku and hakimi and replacing lukaku with dzeko. No wonder he left.
Conte would love to build a legacy, and considering united throw money at their managers, it's a perfect fit. There's this maddening assumption that he'll fall out with the club and he's "another Mourinho". And don't get me started on the gonks that think "he's too defensive". People just make up rubbish about Conte and then just believe it to be true. He's the ideal candidate for the United job, it's as simple as that.
