This is embarrassing. I've been DJ'n for 25 years (18 professionally) and I hate being one of those people who say "back in my day we used to actually have to mix two records together to be a DJ". Let's face it, it only takes a bit of practice to be able to mix properly, especially with today's technology. It would seem like more hard work to actually pretend to look like you're doing something really cool for an hour. What a world we live in now! Haha

I feel you. I grew up mixing on vinyl, scratching, etc. I can beatmatch within a few seconds (riding the pitch slider and nudging the record to adjust to get it done usually within 4 seconds in realtime) and was amazing at things like live mashups, effects (had filters and reverb etc hooked up). Then I saw all these kids pressing 1 button. It actually made me lose the passion and quit DJing because I felt like the art was totally gone, and people now just stand up there like dancing fools and doing Jesus poses while their computers mix. The whole artform became totally fake. Bleh. This video is an excellent example of how ruined the art is. I can't go back. The entire DJ scene is totally fake these days.

These people aren't good DJ's. The best DJ's in their fields are incredibly talented musicians, especially as most of them are playing music that they produced themselves, and if you think that making electronic music, of any genre, is just pushing buttons then you couldn't be more wrong. To be able to make good music, on anything, takes time, passion, and a lot of talent.

Well as the listener i mean whats the fucking diff. Honestly Dj's are so much more impressed with themselves and their gear then anyone else is. My phones playlist i would put up against 90% of Dj's both hip hop and techno. Most of being a good Dj is having good taste in music. I grew up with friends who were techno dj's in the 90s, had full sp1200s and nice mixers, great catalogs of hip hop and techno and literally none of them could mix for shit, after years of owning tables and $400 mixers. At least 10 Dj's who couldnt mix just in my friend circle from high school. It was a really common fad among raver kids.

Isnt easy while trying to also match the bpms. My friends always looked down on anyone who would use a bpm counter but none of them could mix for shit so.

    • @despair6
      @despair6 4 ปีที่แล้ว +137

@@Ibrahim___246 Yes and no, the reason why the knobs are used, is to cut the audio frequency of that sound, for an audio track you generally have three kinds of EQ(equalizer) knobs you have Highs, mids, and lows, lows generally being lower and upper bass, mids generally being vocals(although vocals can also reside in highs) and sounds like hi-hats/toms/cymbals/etc in highs
Now for a slight example, lets say you are wanting to bring in a track that is VERY heavy bass(lows) but has really good vocals and maybe you want the mids to climb as you fade it in, so you might want to cut the lows and mids completely(we are assuming the highs are not in this portion of the song, or they align with your current tracks highs), and you want to bring the track in over your current track that has no vocals... So in-ear you beat match the track(We are also assuming this track is in key with your current one), and at the part where you want the vocals to start fading in, you rise track 2 fader up slowly while also adjusting the mid EQ... This will give the impression that the sound is fading in while it builds with the other track. from there you can slowly adjust the lows, or do as is required...
Now if you were to try this with just the crossfader, keeping in mind track 2 has a VERY bassy sound, if you just crossfade it might sudden overpower the other song and sound like shit, now there is a trick to that, but we are getting into technical stuff... Basically, the EQs are used to make sure all levels of sound are equal, which is why a DJ will constantly adjust them, a proper DJ is skilled in hearing the very MINOR details that the majority usually wont hear.
By the way, I am terrible at explaining via text it's much easier to show someone with
voice and the actual product... lol

I am 43, went to my first rave 25 years ago. We were misfits. We didn’t idolize the dj. We didnt have phones. We listened to the music and danced with one another. Now, its about who can look the coolest, its all about taking crappy videos so you can enjoy the moment later while showing your friends how cool you are. Kids today dont live in the moment or actually take in the experience. Theres no room to dance angmore and everyone faces the dj as if he is God.
I started losing interest in dj’ing when everything went digital and there was no longer any physical media or personal connection with that media.

So they just tweak the knobs to make it look like they’re working. Even the weekly radio shows now are all prerecorded yet some of them like asot show you people in the studio making it look like they’re working when it’s just a premixed show. I'm way too lazy to fake DJ. Yes you heard that right. It takes way more work to make or find a prerecorded set and then flop your hands around the controls and make sure not to accidentally hit something, or not do too much or too little. If you're mixing for real, you can make mistakes and then creatively correct them. You can do much less and interact with the crowd more. You can literally do whatever you want as long as the mix keeps rolling.

Fake DJs are a disgrace to electronic music. All they do is press play on one turntable and pretend to mix throughout the entire show when there are DJs who would spend years mastering the craft and honing in the skills to mix songs.

But on the other side of the argument, i've read in Mix Mag (or 1 of those other DJ mags) that those who put on the festivals are considering having everyone use the automatic beat matching option to avoid the double beat issue entirely.

I was a producer, organizer, and event manager before I was comfortable on the tables in front of more than 50 ppl. I ended my EDM career live mixing 6 tracks at once across digital, analogue and playing OC remixes for old school loong mixes without software assistance while also VJIing my own set... of a combo of my most despised genres, a combination of trap, dubstep and top 40 pop music to prove a point in a forum of 300 or so ppl. You said it cant be done? 10 years later they still listen to that set for their gym sesh.

Dude that has been djing for 4-5 years laughed at me when I said it would take me almost a month to create a full set. Am I wrong here? Cause damn, it took me almost 2 hours just to get the effect I wanted between 2 songs in order for it to be how I imagined it. Add in constantly changing and keeping it appealing to not just myself, but a crowd... lotta work. Especially being new. I haven't relied on sync, or even used it yet. Another thing he kept telling me to do, and I just refuse to "rely" on something to mix my songs. I gotta be right in saying understanding why and how something works is more important than winging it and going complete a.i.

I was a rave DJ for 15 years and I personally witnessed astonishing levels of total chicanery from major "world class" headliners so many times. They're all hype, not all of them but a lot of them. Also primadonnas and babies who play like shit and blame it on everyone and everything else lol but the reality is they consistently suck. I've even seen them cry and threaten to leave and sue the promoter because the opening DJ played too good and they were scared to go on. LMAO. So much nonsense. I never had any real success, but I have my dignity, integrity, and self-respect, and that's worth way more to me! Never catch me wearing a big dumb ass styrofoam marshmallow on my head! Funny video for sure

@@Vanceydress what relevance does that have to anything? You think making money means anything? All the money in the world can’t make someone happy who has no capacity for happiness, and yet one who has capacity can be happy in any circumstances. I don’t make money because I could care less about money. Means nothing to me. I give much of what I do make away! Integrity is far more valuable and durable than wealth and I’d rather have integrity and dignity than money any day. I would never use any kind of gimmick, gimmicks are for hacks.

As much as I adore Above & Beyond and their music, NOBODY is going to convince me their Group Therapy sets aren’t pre-mixed/recorded. Having produced and DJ’d for many moons, there’s no way they could mix a set ‘live’ to that level of perfection, without any mistakes, missed beats etc using only one ear piece of the headphones throughout. No bloody way.

As someone who DJ's and loves everything about it, there is no such thing as "the perfect set". The beautiful thing about DJing is that no one set is ever truly the same, because your set reflects your mood. There were times I felt I found a perfect mix, but when trying to recreate it, it was either suddenly boring, or I just felt a different way in that moment. Each DJ set is the same. The music they felt that night was a unique experience, and even in an attempt to recreate it, they are likely to take a few unexpected twists and turns due to feeling a different way this time.
The people who DJ like this do it because they love the music, and if this is who you are, then you would never be happy with playing the same pre-recorded set, over and over. That would be soul crushing.
Maybe, just maybe, instead, those DJ's are playing the music they want and others love, and everyone is having a great time, enjoying good music. There is no conspiracy, just music lovers having a good time finding new ways to mix their favorite music.

I usually just play with the headphone volume knob. I don't pretend like it does anything but its something to fidget with between having to mix. It always feels like I need to be doing something. Even when I played in bands I would be turning knob and using the mod wheel on my keyboard when I wasn't playing. It just feel awkward to not do anything.

@@seriouswithdaysoff back in the day, DJs would get a track playing, then be crouched down, searching their crate for the next one, pitching it, scratch-cueing it. it was a race against time lol. These days you press "next" and it's already loaded and cued for you, giving DJs very little to do during the duration of the track. (not saying one is better than the other). But yeah, you can't blame DJs for getting a little awkward, self-conscious and fidgety, especially if they are center stage with everyone looking at them. (DJ booth is easier. like that guy, do you laundry lmao)

It's just at the moment the DJ probably tweeked slightly a bassline, or treble, made sure the volume fader is up (cause trust me it happens, I find myself pushing the fader up at times even when it's already up), some are clearly playing premade mixes and are clearly not dj-ing, but others are just fixing stuff very slightly..
