Mariah Carey's "My All," [LIVE on SNL 1998] - SINGER REACTS

  • This is my reaction, analysis and breakdown of Mariah Carey performing “My All,” live on SNL. This song is so good, such a powerful, feel good ballad with a very 90s aesthetic. I love how she starts with a lot of air in her sound, the minor sounding runs, and how the song builds to a belty power ballad typical of Mariah. Her sound is a lot brighter here, which was commono in this era for her, and she gives us some good moments of switches between registers, which she is great at.
    I love this video and thought she looked great. Mariah is a great performer in addition to being a great vocalist. Though there were a few moments that indicated her voice may have been tired or irritated, she still sounded great and did a great job of powering through.
    I am a jazz/R&B vocalist, baritone saxophone player, music educator, and vocal coach local to New Orleans. I have two degrees in jazz/music education and work professionally playing music. Thank you for all the support on these videos! It is such a joy to create educational, entertaining content for you. I’m looking forward to making more reactions, as well as expanding on ways to create educational/music related content for all of you. I’m so grateful for every one of you!

    I think this is a virtuoso performance. The falsetto had a couple of tired moments at the beginning, but the rest was such a masterclass of agility, resonance, musicality. So good.

    • @ilovetati91
      @ilovetati91 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Her voice gained rasp in this era (although it always had hints of rasp due to the nodules - I believe - regardless of vocal condition). Plus she's singing in an ultra breathy place using fifth octave falsetto and complex melisma. To still pull that off (minus those two tired moments) is highly impressive

    Thank you; your comments are really helpful for those of us who are attempting to sing this song. I've seen this performance many times and I never noticed all those subtle runs, little flips and other details, until you analyzed them.
    The hoarseness, airyness and little stops in some phrases are all the result of vocal nodules, but Mariah is a very skilled singer and can make it sound like they're stylistic choices. From this era on the nodules noticeably started to negatively affect her singing. Although she's had many amazing performances throughout her career, I don't think her voice ever fully recovered after '97.

    • @erikatorresmusic_

      You’re so welcome! I’m so pleased to hear that it helps you. Please note that you don’t HAVE to do all those little things. A warm, round tone will sound beautiful with or without the little flips or runs. I choose take runs out all the time because I don’t think they’re always necessary. Though it’s great to notice the details so that you can make an informed decision about how you yourself want to approach the song.
      You’re so right that Mariah really makes these little hiccups seem intentional, and even though her voice is fatigued she still sounds great. Thank you for your comment :)

    Hey hey!! Happy Thanks giving! My all is one of the hardest song in the way she does it.. It has almost everything in the way she singing it... whispering,constant register changes,octave jumps, switch between head/chest/falsettos ,run,rifts,super lows,breathy vocals,softness,hardness,intentional lil cracks,vocal fry....ok except whistle register. For me its a very special performance cause it was one of her last completely live performances that aim to sing it like it was on the studio and pretty much mostly nailed it.. it wasn't as good as the studio but the emotional addition made it on par if not even better than studio,which is the last time she did something better than studio and completely live(same goes for that era butterfly). after this she avoided stuff,she changed it way too much or added lipped parts... and all these became a new common for her future live performances becoming the new normal for her and every year those habits became more common till now that she almost prerecord everything and its like 20% live and all others are prerecorded and/or dubbed.. also a new habit she started a few years later (a bit on next album,Rainbow with more noticeable and overdone it at charbracelet) she altered her vocals on studio over pitched them up and it was very noticeable,notes that she never could sing live not even at her peak (like belting A5 + )becoming an obsession with a new vocal style more mixed,very light,bright mimic girly pop sound super lack of vibrato,almost always shouty/screaming the notes earning some higher belts in range but loosing so much quality etc. anyway at 1997 she was still amazing and this was the point she should take a 1 year break and get some rest,instead she overdid it and damaged her voice,her body and her mind... the rest is history.. Anywayyyyyys I enjoyed you video! very good analysis,pointers and great Vibes as always!!

      Hi!!!! This is definitely such a hard song and she really uses SO many different skills you're totally right. I didn't know this was one of her last totally live performances!!! You're right that this one is so special, and even little flaws sometimes make it more charming. I need to delve more into her later stuff because I know her sound changed a lot. Question, when someone says someone is airy during singing, is that necessarily a bad thing or just a technique?

    • @erikatorresmusic_
      @erikatorresmusic_  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! Being airy can have a lot of factors. It's physically caused by someone singing, but their vocal cords don't close all the way which allows air to pass through as they're resonating. If you aren't sure what this sounds/feels like, try letting out a very big sigh while saying out loud "Haaaaa." You should hear and feel some air in your sound! You may notice you can control how much air is in the sound, you can add more breath or take some out. Even if you aren't a singer!
      Sometimes a very airy sound is caused by irritation because the vocal cords are inflamed which prevents them from closing all the way. That's why people sound airy and raspy when they're sick or hungover.
      Being airy is NOT always a bad thing! Many singers choose when, where and how airy to be and can use air to get BEAUTIFUL sounds. I loooove a little air in the tone sometimes. It is definitely a technique!
      It can be problematic when someone is TOO airy, as that can sound bad and strain the vocal cords. Or when being airy is the ONLY way they know how to sing. In this performance Mariah gets a lot of great sounds using airiness, but there are a few moments where it sounds to me like her voice is a little irritated which is giving us a VERY airy quality.
      Thanks for leaving this great question! Hope this answers it :)

    The irritation you’re hearing started coming out visibly in 1997 around when her voice started changing rapidly. I am always fascinated by how throughout her career she sounds different in each era cause she’s adapted her singing style to the changes in her voice. It must not be easy to deal with nodules and not always be able to trust your voice but I think the increasing airiness and hoarseness are linked to that, yet she went ahead and turned this into a signature style, queen.

    Mariah around this time was going through a divorce and taking over handling a lot of aspects of her career she hadn't before (in terms of business). So there were probably a million things happening in her life that didn't let her rest as much, aggravated by mental turmoil.
    You definitely should do a video on her voice and nodes but in conjunction with how perhaps her mental state and situation could also affect her voice. Like her miscarriage in 2007-08.

    • @Marcusrafaelfet
      @Marcusrafaelfet ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are so many reasons that might have caused her nodules to get worse, it's impossible to know what affected or not, but probably a combination of all of those things. Her career was very demanding in the 90s with albums and promotion every year, she have said a couple of times she doesn't like to warm up her voice, do vocal exercises, she just sings. She would go on tour sick and hoarse (Music box tour). She didn't stop to rest when her voice was sending the first signals of a more dramatic deterioration during 97-99, instead those were years she worked the most. She have said she would spend nights without sleep recording on studio and writing songs, there's also alot of stress she did go through in the 00s, depression, bipolar disorder (that come along with a bunch of medication that can affect your body), abuse of alcohol. She had a miscarriage in 2008, and her twins pregnancy in 2011, since those are a hormonal explosions it can affect your voice alot. Even the dramatic accident she had in 2013 that left her with a clavicule and ribs fracture, and nerve injury in her arms and hands, she had to take alot of medication like corticoids for years, not sure about the voice, but it affects your body alot. She have benn through a LOT in her life, and many of those things certainly have affected her body and voice.

This performance isn’t her best live of this song, the tokyo dome performance was by far the most accurate execution. My only gripe with it is that the first chorus is lip synced, but I think by that time she realized she needed some space to preserve her voice for the climax of the song, the last two chorus’s.

      This was by far the best performance of the song. Her whispery vocals might've sounded raspy, but the belts were amazing, and she performed it exactly like the studio version. The Tokyo Dome one is most probably dubbed with lip-synced chorus. She also dodged a few E5s in that performance.

      @@erikatorresmusic_ yes, e.g. whistle notes, I guess those are hard to pull off live; you have to be physically in your peak form; what's your take on that? Do you use whistle notes in live performances as well? I know you did whistle notes in your recordings.

      That year was not peak Daydream level, but I still consider her vocal prime to be 1990-1998. The Butterfly era had gorgeous agility and tonal variation despite the loss of ease in her upper belts.

    Not my favourite reaction. Way too much focus on the negative aspects, I was left confused whether she was throwing shade in an otherwise positive reaction or whether she was picking a few positive bits in an otherwise negative reaction. Very puzzling to me.

      @Jo-qf1gd ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Just because she doesn’t delude herself into thinking Mariah is a machine and doesn’t make mistakes, get tired, get hoarse etc doesn’t mean she’s being negative. If anything, she’s the most respectful reactor I’ve seen. Come back to reality sis!!!!

      I don't agree that it was a negative reaction or she was throwing shade, BUT I do wish she had spent more time talking about how skillful this performance is rather than focusing on the two very very subtle rapsy moments. What other singer could pull off a virtuoso performance like this?
