You actually can grow in straight sand but the peatmoss, perlite and pumice help to lighten the mixture so you can move the pot if you need to lol. You are absolutely correct when you put the compost on the surface and not below to prevent the decompostion from using the oxygen in the soil.

@@tristardragonfruit I was trying to mix the Gary M style soil. Perlite is already in the mix. I saw someone else with the same issue who use lava rock with success. I finally found the brand name but it’s 80$ shipping. That’s more than the product so I’m narrowing to maybe a lava rock shell mixture . Those a readily avail materials here.
