    Michael is one of the few bassists that switches from finger style to picking depending on the sound she wants for the song. She mostly uses her fingers but for Stealing Rosemary she’s using a pick. Most bassists use only one technique exclusively. Michael knows!

    Micki's bass playing and voice are understated. I love them all but Michael's base, voice, composition are so integral to the band. Without her, and I have watched the videos over and over and amazed with her instrumentals. Seems we all focus on lead, but the bass playing by her equals the rest of the other's skills.

    This is the best recording of this concert and thanks for uploading. Susanna Hoffs has such a soft, beautiful voice, same for the band too really and they are all ageless. Their selections of material to cover show their own strong 60s sensibilities and appreciation of music. Same for their instruments ( Rickenbacker guitars) and clothes to match. Reasons all they are one of my favorite bands.
    Songs from Simon & Garfunkel, Big Star, Kim Rew , The Seeds,the Grass Roots,Byrds etc they really make all their own. Their versions of " You were on my mind" and "Where were you when I needed you ' far eclipse the originals.

    I never knew how good they actually are. I liked Manic Monday ok when it came out and I thought their Hazy Shade of Winter cover was good but they are actually better live than their recordings imho. Beautiful harmonies and tight arrangements. This is my 1st time watching them play live and I'm very impressed. Thanks for the upload.

    • @Nyssa337
      @Nyssa337  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, I think I can safely say that the general consensus among fans is that The Bangles were an extremely talented group whose members all wrote original songs, sang beautiful harmonies, and played best live as a garage band/rock group. As good as their records were, they were subject to a lot of the pop/synth overproduction that was common in the 1980s. I personally believe some of their best work was on Doll Revolution (2003) which they wrote, recorded, and produced themselves.

    • @luv24real
      @luv24real 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Nyssa337 Doll Revolution is indeed a wonderful album, and filled with many beautiful original songs. I think it helped that the band recruited Brad Wood, who originally helped capture the raw sound of Veruca Salt, to help with producing that album. Thanks for these uploads, showing what a great live act The Bangles are!

    I still think to this day, the Bangles are the best all group rock band, maybe even one of the best bands of all time, male or female. Unlike the Go-Go’s, for which they are greatly compared too, the women of the Bangles are all great singers and their voices blend perfectly when they harmonize. They are also better musicians than the Go-Go’s. Better song writers and more hit songs as well. I do love the Go-Go’s too, but aside from maybe 4 songs, the Go-Go’s never had the hits like the Bangles.

    This show is amazing! I love Susanna. She's just a sexy, spunky ball of energy. Plus she has the voice of an angel. The look in her eyes on in your room always get me. For those that don't know....she did a cover of "feel like making love" by bad company......pure sex kitten Susanna 😸 😍 and she slayed the song!

    Just one question - the percussion on Walk Like an Egyptian ? Since all 4 girls are on the guitar

    • @Nyssa337
      @Nyssa337  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, in the 80s when they first recorded it, their producer insisted they use a drum machine for that one song to get the gong sounds, whistling, and other sound effects. Debbi was originally slated to do all the lead vocals. The producer of the Different Light LP decided to give one verse each to the other three and in concerts Debbi was just doing backing vocals and hitting a tambourine. After they reformed, they continued to use an electronic track for the percussion and Debbi started playing rhythm guitar. The VH1 Behind the Music episode on The Bangles has Debbi talking about this in detail.

I love the way you take care and bring us not just the music of The Bangles, but all the side bar info pieces in your annotations too. Strangely I never thought I'd like annotated versions of concerts ( I mean who does that these days) but you not just do that well you set a pretty high bar too ! Well done sir !

      @@Joles789 - That is extremely kind of you to say, and you've described exactly what my intention was when I made these. I'm not making any money off of my channel nor do I intend to start. I just want to use my channel to educate and entertain people about things I love (which includes The Bangles). I've been a music teacher for 26 years now and a published composer for 11 years so it's a particular passion of mine. I am extremely grateful for the positive response.

    Hi Mekel, Is this the full concert or is it a DVD release? I've seen other clips from what looks like the same performance of other songs? "You were on my mind" and "I'm not talking" for example?

      This was the DVD that came out in 2007. There were other songs performed at the concert that weren't on the DVD but I don't know which ones.

    Does anyone know if Michael Steele writes the bass lines for Eternal Flame?

    • @Nyssa337
      @Nyssa337  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I gather, when one of them wrote a song, Michael would write the bass line based on the chord progression written by the songwriter. In the case of Eternal Flame, Susanna co-wrote the song so I imagine the rest of the group learned the chord progressions and wrote their own individual parts accordingly. They probably gave each other feedback and suggestions to fine tune the ensemble. Just a hypothesis, but based on the way the group collaborated it seems the most logical approach.

    • @wilmmabata01
      @wilmmabata01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Nyssa337 I want to also think that way. Man, the bass line in Eternal Flame is incredibly dynamic and it saddens me always that Michael doesnt play it during live, which begs the question of whether she writes it or not.

    • @Nyssa337

      @@wilmmabata01 I think it's just a musical choice to leave off the electric bass part when the rest of the band is acoustic. Michael is too good a musician and writer to have to rely on other people for the bass line. Just my guess, but Steele was always tasteful and musical in laying down bass lines, and I can't imagine her not changing any bass line given to her to fit her style and ability, which I personally think is unique.

    • @wilmmabata01
      @wilmmabata01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Nyssa337 I know she's a great bass player, writer, and musician overall. But honestly, that bassline can really support their acoustic performance, just like how they played it in the Queen Latifah show with a bass sessionist (th-cam.com/video/GGW649hkBQo/w-d-xo.html).
      Oh well. Still, hands down, Michael Steele is a brilliant musician and groove maker. I hope to see her play live soon.
