This week, Adam, Norm, and Will discuss home repairs, and why it's so darn difficult to get them done. Well, we eventually get around to that. We discuss Nick Nolte, the connection between Rocky and Bladerunner, while Will makes a series of startling revelations.
For illumination during home repair, the *best* thing I've found is a good head-mounted light. It keeps your hands free, it's always pointed the right way, and it goes pretty much anywhere you can fit your head.
Absolutely a must have for tight spots, but it works well even for mundane things like doing wiring in a room where you've cut power.
Awesome! I love watching these, gives me a ton of motivation to get projects done. I just wish they were longer.
So wonderful to hear you all sit down and just talk! please do more of these!
Hey guys! I'm really loving the series.
One thing I always advise for the first-time home owner to always have on hand is a gallon can of wet application roof patch. It's great for stopping the rain *inside* your house.
More things for home repair toolkit
- Tape measure (with metric and imperial)
- Filler
- Sandpaper and block
- Insulation tape and duct tape
- zip ties
- rare earth magnet (for easy locating of screws/nails in the wall)
- MRE (for when you need food but don't want to stop working and go get it)
- Dremel or small cheap rotary tool kit with a few bits
- Hacksaw (Doesn't have to be a full one, just a hacksaw blade with handle)
- Gluegun
Best quote of the episode:
_A toilet so prone to clogging, you can clog it with a vigorous wee_
:D
i hate tool bags - tools on top of tools in a big jumble is just a huge pain. my favorite is a medium tool box with 3 shallow drawers. the top drawer is for screwdrivers, the next is for pliers/wrenches, and the bottom drawer is for files, drill bits, and such. the top section under the lid is for the bulky stuff that won't fit in a drawer: hammer, mallet, saws, etc. the shallow drawers ensure the tools are only one deep; which makes them easy to find even when jumbled together.
The ruler and camera phone tip is something I never considered! Thank you!!
A basin wrench. If you ever need to replace a leaky faucet it will save your knuckles and sanity. I had both my bathroom sink faucet become unrepairable, and the same month both the feed lines to my kitchen sink hilariously gave out all at once in the night, and I gave up on cramming a cressent wrench up there and bought a basin wrench.
every time Norm said "Phillips" all passive aggressive i was cracking up.
My husband and I don't have a house but he is already collecting his tool set. :)
THANK YOU WILL!!!! I thought I was the only one that gave lines like that to Best Buy about their warranty. The other day I bought some monitors and when they asked about the warranty I said "Well I'm going to rip them apart and put them in a space ship console, so no, I don't think I need that."
I'm so glad I found this channel, I love listening to trivial stuff like this while I do something else. Adam is a nerd God, and the rest light up my inner nerd as well
A box or tube to keep all the extra screws, nails, ect that come with build your furniture and shelving kits. I do not know how many times I have bent or broken something and rummaged in that box and found a duplicate from another project.
I spotted that Ray Harryhausen Documentary on Netflix and sat down immediately to watch the whole thing.
Five Stars!!!
Norm says basically nothing in most of the podcasts, I think he just loves to listen to Adam^^
Who doesn't. I think that's why were all here to listen to Adam....
juans daone but we are not IN the podcast^^
true..
I think it is because this isn't a topic he knows much about since he probably doesn't live on his own yet.
musFuzZ Norm was there?!?
a small magnet in your shirt pocket to keep small screws readily available on the outside when you have to screw something tight high up.
a small air compressor to use from everything to home pneumatic tools to cleaning filters and computers and whatnot with. Also to refill air in your bike, car or motorcycle.
Spatulas, knives, pudding/mud for fixing holes in concrete walls, etc. etc.
Homer Repair! I love this episode. Adam is on such good form! Brilliant.
Norms "Ah" at the talk of the motion detectors in the closet is just great.
I laughed and learned and life feels good. Awesome conversation, guys.
The Harryhausen documentary is great. Thank you for telling me it was on Netflix. I also like good things :D
My two main gripes about Still untitled:
1. Too short. At least 45 minutes would be better because you guys get started really well after 10 minutes or so (even though those 10 minutes are fun) and then the show abrubptly ends. 30 minutes is too long for casual viewing and too short to set it as a background when doing something in the workshop.
2. Let Norm get to talk too lol.
Jason Purcell really? A three years old comment and this is what you decided to reply?
Refinishing bathtubs is the same as buying the extended warranty. I've done building maintenance for 20 years and NEVER seen a refinish work well. Find a good deal on a vintage cast iron and install.
Do not EVER mess with the outlets or any of the other power systems in your home. Even if you are "comfortable" with electronics, NEVER do this. I have degrees in physics and engineering and currently work designing electronics for microsatellites. I think I have a pretty good handle on how electronics and power systems work, but even at that I would NEVER touch my home's power systems. the 'hand in your pocket' trick does NOT always work, especially when you are near conducting materials (as you are likely to be in your home), and even if it prevents an arc from making a complete circuit, it does not protect your body from internal bleeding or organ failure. Home diy is fun and great, but NEVER mess with power systems.
My father did exactly the same thing as Will's when he was working on electrical stuff, except with a broom handle.
2 pipe wrenches are needed. You often need to turn one thing without letting the torque get to another.
If you can't deal with a meter, a neon glow bulb based circuit tester is handy. Even if you do have a meter the circuit tester is handy. On most of them, just touching the electrical hot will make a faint glow in the bulb.
A crimper for doing crimp lugs is handy if you have any low voltage stuff.
weiss sheet metal shears are great to have in a home kit. I use them for opening plastic packages and cutting cardboard.
Electrical work tip: Set a couple of hours aside to map out all your circuit breakers so that you can always turn off the right one.
I have been replacing my batteries with Eneloops too this year. They are great, i'm so happy I only have AA and AAA of one brand to think about instead of a collection of different (non)-rechargeable batteries. Be sure to buy a decent charger capable of charging individual batteries at once. Almost all charges are quick charges capable of 'destroying' your rechargeables in no time. (e.g. I'm very happy with the Maha powerex MH-C801D).
do not forget the ever important teflon tape in your home repair kit. and the whole extended warranty is great for computer parts. especially when the store has no hassle over the counter exchange policy.
Crow bar and end cutting nipper pliers. The nipper pliers are a life saver when you are ripping up carpet or you've snapped the head off of a nail. Necessity for any tool box.
8:09 One thing I learned in my life is that one should always make the flush rating on a toilet the number one priority when selecting a toilet.
Enjoyed listening to you guys show......and Adam, thanks for the heads up on the "wet-wipes",........lol.......helping keep the worlds sewers flowing, one flush at a time!
E-Z anchors or anything to help screwing in the damn gyps... also a magnet and a studfinder is darn useful!!
This episode was funnnny. :D Kept me in stitches.
4:04 is the funniest thing Norm has ever said "I like good things too." and 26:18 Adam says "do do"
Worth watching the entire video just to see Norm's reaction to Will's hair clog story. :)
I heard the Steve Martin joke coming, and I was glad
Good show!
Black Friday is also plumbers Brown Friday.....the nightmare of working at a Best Buy on Black Friday, and the entire store only has 3 toilets and a urinal......That only lasted until about 10am and backed up in both bathrooms with every plumber booked out.
Five year engagemnet is another great Rom com
Did I miss what that gold tube is for? I keep looking at it but I don't know what it is. And Adam grabs it at one point getting me interested in it again then puts it back not saying what it is.
Flushing apples was the standard that Mr Crapper used, I believe in testing his 'Super Flusher' (10 apples were once flushed, whole)
#3 about being a plumber, 'The boss is an SOB'.
My stepson owns a house he calls a "project rich environment"
You guys should review the new Switch Infinia LED bulbs or maybe the original Switch or both.
OK, here's my worst home repair tip - well, the second half; the first half is allright: If you notice your toilet brush is starting to look a little under the weather, buy a new one - lest the bristled head breaks off and lodges itself in the S lock.
How did I fix that? Well, after trying - and failing - to force my giant manly paws down the pipe and reach it I... called the plumber dude, who said if I wasn't flooding (which I wasn't) could we wait 'til monday, at which point the thing had apparently dislodged ifself and sailed off down poop river.
So yeah, my tip: Just wait, and your problem will go away by ifself.
holds its charge "indefinatly", then defines the time in which they hold their charge ...
Lol... until the second that Will mentioned that robot leg I did not notice it on the table.
what the hell is a power scrubber?
Home repair is a lot easier after finding harbor freight, cheap tools and they have lots to choices. Do you guys have one out there or do you use more name branded tools?
Hot is on the Left, cold on the right, and sh*t runs downhill. That is what my dad always told me. He was a carpenter ha ha.
My dad, a plumber, always said sh!t doesn't go up hill, know when you get paid, and don't eat with your fingers.
What was the battery recharger they were talking about?
OMG thats so best buy worked there when I was a kid, managers would always come up to customers as they were at the register and tried to slip in a last minute sale that you "Need" aka they just want the sale to up the numbers
I love my Eneloops. For things like xbox controllers eneloops are king as they last like 10x longer per charge than alkaline batteries do. I use them in everything from flashlights, camera flash's, remote controls be it for appliances or consoles.
You forgot a stud finder. Did you mention any handsaws? Basic Mechanics Tool set would be good because basic car repairs and maintenance can be possibly done at the home too! Electrical work scares me and would have to leave that up to a professional, just too much potential danger. Even if you do it without getting shocked, you run the risk of fire hazards.
You've Got Mail was a horrible re-make of the beautifully sweet James Stewart classic The Shop Around The Corner.
Speak of the devil, we're a week into remodeling our kitchen and my dad and I did enough electrical and plumbing work so make This Old House look like Barney's craft time.
Extended warranty?!!! How could I loose?!! XD
get a klein multi bit screwdriver. the tips are harder and you don't strip as many screw heads.
Also Meg and Hanx: Voe Vs. Volcano...
Incandescents are over on the coasts. In between we still have them.
I've never had the potato in a broken light fixture work for me.
rule #3 of plumbing, never bite your fingernails.
There's awlays at least 2 or 3 references I don't get in each one of these shows! At 20:44 when Adam says "that's Getty territory".. what does that mean? :) please help aleve my ignorance
i think its about J. Paul Getty and how he built a museum to fit his art collection, ran out of room and made another museum to house his collection.
astoriasky
Ah, right! Thank you for that! I did wonder.
As an electrician...
Please don't fuck around with rewiring.
Please don't fuck around with rewiring.
PLEASE don't fuck around with rewiring.
Only try to repair the things in your home once and if you don't get it Fixed call someone in to help you
That bathtub paint is a latex and it's a shit service, I should know, i used to make my living that way!
I don't get the sony bravia "do you know who i am?" joke! What are they talking about? Power scrubber?
"i have said that phrase once, to a person in the world."
at 16:13 does Adam say the term "Honeymoon list" is something he doesn't like?
Don't forget the black electrical tape!
Wife always has new projects...
I miss still untitled
Joe Versus the Volcano.
You're welcome!
One of my personal favorites.
They should call this the round table
Home Repair Tip: Hire a properly trained Union Tradesman to do the work.
Jeez, Norm... let Adam get a word in edgeways!
You forgot level and stud finder.
Is norm ever saying anything?
pudidotdk he's moderating mostly and keeping them on topic. he participates but mainly facilitates topic changes and context.
They Don't recycle Battery's in PA
A suggested fix for your LED bulb issue Adam - www.amazon.com/dp/B00H4J4BUU
Buddy of mine has a couple and loves them. I haven't clicked buy on them just yet. Would love to have you test them and see if they offer a better solution to your wireless LED bulbs.
Two separate occasions where you tried to flush food down the toilet?
2526 and on tool time they did a sejment about the potato and lightbulb too tim allen
Pure Norm ones more, condemn to be hidden by the 1/2 Adam
Home tool box, list of locals who your able to call and they fix things
Speed Square should be in the tool bag
sweet its adam!!!
No they did not forget level
I'm totally stealing that Fulfillment idea.
That faceless mannequin is terrifying
Sneaky Pete was the pedal steel player for the burrito bros.
Rules of pluming, Shit runs down hill. Payday is Friday and DON'T lick your fingers. The last rule is vital.
26:18 DO DO haha...I'm so mature..
ENELOOP are amazing will not have anything other
Oh tools. I have more tools within arms reach from my computer desk than most people have in their house. I counted the amount of screw drivers (not including the multi bit sets but including the small eyeglass style screw drivers) I have at my desk and it was 21. Its probably more now because I added a few earlier today. This is just at my desk. I have a drill holstered at the foot of my bed and a binder clip at the edge of my desk holding my dremel. My windowsills have multiple styles of pliers on them. My record player/turntable holds all my multibit screwdriver kits since it doesn't have a lid. Then behind me I have a bookshelf with no books just more tools or half completed projects. This is my bedroom. My garage has no cars just more tools and random crap. My basement is furnished but has more tools then my bedroom. I think I have a problem. #singlelifeFTW
?
my house has literally shitty plumbing too
canister light? you mean "pot" light right?
Never seen 48hours?
That is a crime.
Re; about home repairs.....for a man, it's always, "good enough". And for a woman, It's never good enough, or wants to change things all the time.....Men can't win....lol....
Home repair...i build cupboards and paint and tile my whole house...every time i go to the hardware store they ask me if my husband told me what to get! 🤬
Wet Wipes and paper, That's why we have bins!!! in Greece.
