I’ll always be a physical media guy. Right now, CDs are actually making a comeback. I love owning a tangible music collection that I can play anytime I want. Don’t need an WiFi connection , don’t need to worry about if an album or artist is available on a streaming service. And I also like that my purchase of a bands cd supports that artist

I am one of those people who began collecting vinyl records in the 1960's, well 1964 actually, after I discovered The Beatles. In 1983 or 1984, I was sold on cd's. Not only the sound, but the convivence of their relatively small size. So, as my cd collection grew, I found I listened to my vinyl records less and less, vinyl was obsolete. Jump ahead to the age of streaming services, and the conundrum of cd vs streaming. While I still buy cd's for all the reasons I always have, it's becoming somewhat harder to justify spending $15.00 - $20.00 on a single cd when I can get the music on that cd and literally thousands more albums, ep's singles etc. for the low, low price of $10.99 on Amazon or Apple Music. I struggle with this all the time. Now there are some artists no matter what, I have to have their music on cd.
I find there are a lot of bands I like to listen to just to be experiencing something new and different, but that I don't want to shell out real money for, so that's where streaming really comes in handy, Lots of options, and so little time. Thanks for an interesting discussion, Larry. Keep enjoying the music no matter the format.

I mostly stream now and have only bought three CD boxsets in over a year. LPs are the big thing at the moment and last year I sold almost half of my LPs. I still have literally thousands of CDs and still listen to them, but have almost stopped buying any more. You don't have to get rid of your CD collection if you start streaming. You can enjoy both!

I love both formats' CDs & vinyl LPs. The real truth is that often times analog vinyl sounds better than digital. Likewise, CDs can sound better than vinyl. It all depends on the sound engineer and the remastering process. Some vinyl enthusiasts will say vinyl always sounds better than CDs. If the music was recorded digitally, CDs will often sound better. I think both vinyl & CDs sound way better than streaming!

The great thing about streaming is the endless variety of music to check out at the click of a button, especially new albums. I like the convenience, but I prefer the physical copies of Vinyl and CD's. With streaming, it often feels to me like I'm "renting" the music, with my collection I have the perception, at least from my own perspective that I have invested something in the artist.

Hi Larry I started collecting records in the early 70s still have a lot of them never play them. then I switched to cassettes still have a lot of them rarely play them. then switched to cds I play them Pretty much every day and have a pretty big collection that goes way beyond what I had on vinyl, or cassette people have been telling me don't collect cds for over 20 years I still do and am often finding ones I love the only thing I am finding is some of the less common ones are getting hard to find and or expensive I don't want to give up my great collection I have I may weed out some I don't care about what happens though is you care about those ones after they are gone.

Physical CDs only. Very versatile. Buy the album in .wav format and get a good quality CD to burn it in. You can also print the album and print a custom art onto the CD and it’ll look as if it the legit thing. Stick to CDs bc streaming could always remove it anytime

I actually for the first time ever instead of buying a book that I wanted I’m getting it where it’ll be sent to my phone. I can listen to it whenever I want. Physical media--records, CDs, even cassettes--has never been more important. (I would also add books, DVDs and blue ray discs to my argument.) The reason all comes down to one concept: Control. Who has the control of the media you get to see, hear, read, etc? Are you going to leave it up to the corporate giants? Or are you going to give that control to yourself? If you pay a monthly bill to the corporate giants, then they get to decide what you can hear, how, you can hear it, IF you can hear it, or maybe they'll edit it, cancel it, whatever. Suppose they all get offended by Sparks or Led Zep or whoever... and they take down all their music? Where are we gonna go to hear it if no one has any physical media from those bands? I know where I'll go! I"ll go to my CD rack and pull out whatever album I want to hear. And I will hear it in its glorious uncompressed format with all of its hi fi sound quality. I will enjoy the album artwork. And it's essentially free after I have made my original purchase to own it. One financial exchange; not some monthly bill. Plus, I just love the physical media. I love owning the stuff. It's cool. That may be why CDs are making a comeback.

I don't think anyone should be belittled for however they listen to their music. Some people out there will still be buying cassette tapes. That's their choice ultimately, they're still listening to the music and that's what counts at the end of the day.

I think that streaming is only good when you want to check out new music to see if you want to buy the album
As for vinyl records, they are really cool, but the negative is that they take up a lot of space and as a visually impaired person, I always have to ask someone to help me play them because if I try to play them on my own, I always miss the grooves
I love CDs because they don’t take up space and they have a really good sound
I will always treasure my CD collection
I will never stream music unless the album that I want to listen to is not available on CD or if like I said in the beginning, I want to check something out to see if I want to buy it

I had the same issue you had with King Gizzard, with an album by the group The Warning, "Error". It was only available at their webstore, but sold out. However, I grabbed a CD at eBay, but for way too much money. Their webstore got it in eventually, so I bought another, for safe keeping. And I was right to do so, you still can't buy it at a regular store or online retailer. I mostly buy CD's, but I started getting into LP"s again in 2020. But, that was short-lived. Vinyl records just cost too much these days. I'll buy a few, every now and then. Just special ones, like the upcoming The Beatles In Mono US Albums set. I would never stream. That would be boring to me. I need to have the physical release. Plus, songwriters get really ripped off by streaming sites.

Well, the advantage of physical albums is that they can't just disappear. That can happen with streaming services, for example in the case of disputes over rights and shares. However, I actually listen to my music almost exclusively via streaming services. I still buy albums on CD, though. However, the albums in the sector that I primarily consume are not comparable to this cheap, junk plastic. They are designed packages with photo books, lyric booklets and additional merchandise.

I prefer CDs. They are more durable than vinyl records. And repeated listens do not wear them out. I'm not selling my collection. I don't believe in that "warm" feeling that vinyl buyers stand by. It's all perception and what the listener finds pleasing. I do not stream although it seems to be the most popular method for music consumption for the foreseeable future. Isn't there hi-res streaming? When we lose power and the Internet on occasion, I have physical media that I am thankful for. Different artists seem to be doing different things with what they think will sell and get their music heard. Maybe if there is demand - have you tried emailing King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard or their management about your concern? If you buy the LP you can always have someone rip it in a lossless format, save it to a USB flash drive and put it on a CD yourself. It depends on what having the music is worth to you.

I own lots of vinyls and I kept them despite the bad reputation they acquired as CDs were the big thing (1980-2000). No scratches, wonderful thing. No need to record them on cassette in order to listen to music in my car. Vinyl was on an extinction course. During this period, I bought most of my good vinyls on CD. My turntable was getting old. But I never totally was anti-vinyl.
Now that the vinyl has recovered and is the favorite format of "melomanes" I'm glad I did not discard my old albums and I bought a brand new platine.
And one of the great strengths that vinyl has over Cds is visual. The splendid covers, often gatefolds for a better experience.
These days, when I have the choice between listening to music in vinyl or Cds I choose vinyl. Cannot fully explain why.
Streaming is of less quality in my opinion and we don't have covers and lyrics, but streaming gives us access to infinitely more music than traditionnal supports like vinyl or CD. So it has to be taken in consideration. And cars don't have CD or cassette players anymore. Just blue tooth. Significant advantage.

Hi there no i wouldn't stream it, to listen to my old music doesn't that come with a cost? Surely down loading its not free. Luckily i still have my original vinyl i bought back in the 70s then re bought them on cd aswell why pay again ?, to own a vinyl or cd in your hands feels like you've got something physical, and not from a click of a button. I know i listen to music on TH-cam , but its there why not.?

It sounds good to me, and others might disagree but I am happy using Spotify when I need to. If I like the music enough I buy a CD of the album.

My main objection to streaming and streaming services such Spotify is that you rent the music. It doesn't belong to you. If a band decides to remove their albums from Spotify, the platform will have no choice but to remove them. Also, with Spotify, there are statistics and you are tracked: Spotify knows what you listen to, what you like. Some don't care, personally I don't like it. Before I only listened to CDs. I had no choice but to start buying vinyl records again: as you say, some albums will be cheaper than on CD. Purely digital is my last option. As far as possible Bandcamp, or iTunes (it is possible to buy the files).

I've never seen it as an either or, I use both (or all three with some older stuff, that I still have on vinyl). For a lot of bands it's not easy for me to get the albums, they sell only on their own web shop, so I have to transfer money to some company that runs the webshop, have to take the risk of the CD getting damaged during transport when it's shipped around half the globe, and I might also have to pay import tax. If i can get it easily through Amazon Germany and the price isn't ridiculous I like buying a CD, after I listened to it a few times on Spotify, I wanna know what I'm getting before I spend money.

As I had mentioned I went to streaming a long time ago. I did burn most of my collection to a hard drive but the physical CDs I have are just collecting dust.

Something to consider would be Bluetooth streaming in conjunction with Bluetooth cordless headphones so you could wander around your flat day or night (occasionally naked to give your neighbours a thrill) listening to music and not disturbing anyone. Whenever Spotify or Amazon Music don’t have something I want TH-cam music usually has it, so that is one to consider.

I use Bluetooth with headphones sometimes during the day.

For me physical media is a must. With streaming they can take it from you whenever they please. Or just keep upping the price. On the other hand streaming is great for the variety. I’ve listened to so many things that I never would have if I would have had to buy the cd first.

Spotify all the way! I can explore so much different music. It’s right at my finger tips. It’s like I have the largest record store in the world right in the palm of my hands. I no longer care about listening to my Cd’s or albums, which I have a huge collection of. I’d rather just throw on Spotify. I’ve discovered literally a 100 new/old artists/bands because of streaming. Albums I never would have bought but can just check it out on Spotify for $15 bucks a month. I love it!
