Sure it is, but it's possible when you focus on the rhythms and practice a lot. I will make you a better and more rhythm oriented dancer. So, I think it's worth counting, listening and playing with the rhythms.

Actually ppl can dance contratiempo on clave, for me personally it's easier than dancing on tumbao.
