Robert California was so confusing with his mixed messages that by the end even I was convinced he wanted him to hire his wife.
He wanted to have his wife think he actually tried, he just played the part too well
no he wasn't lol. He said at the beginning he didn't, he was clear, there's nothing more to it.

What else was he supposed to do. You can’t keep saying no to your boss lmao. Robert had the perfect opportunity when his wife said this is getting uncomfortable but he pushed too hard

This episode makes me irrationally mad because Andy played this almost perfectly (only hiccup was the beginning). Robert had an out, but played his hand too strongly and got himself burned. It's not Andy's fault.

@@ninthexplorer1921 I know Robert had to sell it, but he overdid it. Robert literally said that Andy is his employee and that he is telling his employee what to do. It’s not like Andy can just straight up disregard the CEO’s command and disobey him, right? I know he was really trying to sell it and make it seem like he was trying to get his wife a job, but he just overdid it. Robert should have just told Any to to tell his wife something like “We’re fully staffed, but hey, if we have an opening, I’ll give you a call”, or something like that.

2:47 Robert's face subtly changing from smiling and genial, happy for his wife, to dead-eyed, cold, infuriated with Andy is one of my favorite moments of The Office. He not only gave Andy a very random difficult task with no explanation, but he actually made it next to impossible to carry out through his own words. And in the end, it is Andy he must endure his withering scorn.

He really is, I get sad when I see hate for his character because he was one of my favorites.
Among a whole season of very enigmatic noises, movements, sayings, etc… from Robert California, 0:14 is my favorite of his bobble-headed movement quirk of the whole season.

Robert is just playing the part the way he should. I had a similar incident. I went on a first date with a girl, and 20 minutes was enough to tell I wouldn't survive. So many problems like her being 19, an adult, my age, and yet she had her parents bring her. Even if we were alone, the smell was just horrible. The parents reminded me of that incest couple in RDR2. Unfortunately, I'm just too nice. I discreetly texted my friend to call me to work, and keep selling it no matter what. So I got a phone call, put it on speaker, and told him like 5 times I was occupied, and just like I told him to, he kept persistently telling me I needed to come in. He played the part well, and I was saved.

Just realized Robert, in order to get into the office first, intentionally closed the elevator on his wife leaving her to climb the stairs and then questioned her ability to get on an elevator. "Honey, how on earth did you miss the elevator?"
And he's presenting a face of wanting her to work there while demanding they covertly deny her. He's a total gaslighter.
His wife seems quite lovely, she deserves better.

This was Robert's fault, honestly. Once his wife started to back down and acknowledged that there wasn't a place for her in the office, that was Robert's chance to do the same. He blew it by insisting that Andy could do something. Not taking that obvious way out would confuse anyone.

I once met James Spader when I was working as a grip for The Blacklist's earlier seasons (whichever one had Peter Stormare as a guest for a few episodes). He saw me listening to my iPod during a break and asked what I was listening to. It turned into a brief conversation about music because he really loves music and loves listening to all kinds of different genres. From my brief time there, he seemed like a really friendly and easy-going man, not an ounce of that Reddington California intimidation at all, and he always seemed happy to talk with other crew members about different things like where they're from, general life pleasures, none of that "filling the time" small talk, but real, pleasant subjects you don't typically think about on the clock. I hated working grip and don't do it anymore, but blokes like James Spader could really brighten your day with just a brief little chat and I really wish more sets were like that. Lot of it is otherwise really tedious and crunch-crazy.
I've always been a big James Spader fan and I'm really glad to hear that he's a decent guy.

Alright I’m going to say it. I really enjoyed when James Spader came on the show I know people said it declined after Steve Carell left, but James Spader is an amazing actor in whatever he is in, and his character I think still made the show great.
I agree - I really enjoyed the James Spader episodes. He was outstanding and took the discomfort comedy in a very different direction, just like in this particular clip.
James Spader is brilliant. He knows how to keep things interesting. He’ll either make you intrigued or be filled with anxiety. Lol
