    So what technique are you interested in trying, but haven't yet?

    Hey John, another great video. Glad to see ya getting into Pan Pastels. I’ve been using them for several years now. I know they come with the sponge applicators, but I like brushes better. Short stiff brush for heavily weathered areas, and a real soft makeup brush for blending. I use the blending brush most of the time, even when applying the initial layer. You can get a real light touch that way, useful for fading.

      Hey Bill, thanks. My next test with them is going to be with brushes in order to get them into the ribs of the ATGX covered hopper. The fact that you can use a basic eraser to remove them is a pretty neat feature. What has your experience been with clear coats? Future thinned with alcohol seems to work well, and the AK Flat Varnish thinned with denatured alcohol works fairly well too.

      @@JCsRiptrack hey John, I think this artist eraser General’s Factis BM2 would work well to clean pastels off car lettering, seems to have kind of a fine point on it. I am gonna get one to try. I mix Sienna and Umber pastels together on a paper plate to get the shade I want. I always put a flat coat on prior to pastels, it gives a tooth so they stick good. I use rattle-can Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover Matte Clear. It is formulated to bond to plastic. Lot cheaper than Dullcote. When I do decals, I shoot Future straight from the bottle, seems to work fine for me without thinning. Have you tried it unthinned?

      Good idea. I'll see if I can find one of those. Yes, one thing that was clear in both the literature and my experimenting is that a flat coat is definitely needed... the more tooth the better for PanPastels. A near opposite to oils in that sense. I've used Future both thinned with denatured alcohol and straight. If you do it straight though it can get a little pebbly if you're too far from the model.

    Thats a great idea to use the cutlery to test paint

      I've seen various modellers use plastic spoons to do colour tests, but I figured why not use the whole cutlery set?

      The big thing is to try it out. I have some rust tutorials, but there are also others out there too. Find one you like and do some practicing. :)

    I don't remember if you mentioned it or just showed it, but using toilet rolls to hold your body shells while you paint them is genius. My wife is going to wonder why there is a forest of loco bodies and parts suspended on toilet rolls in the laundry.

      I learned the trick from another N-Scaler years ago, but I have forgotten his name to properly acknowledge it. The one caveat is that you have to squish the roll that you put the walkways/handrails on because it can push/bend it out of shape. However they are handy for doing the work. The shell can pop off the end of a roll that isn't "as fresh" so to speak.

    Rusted Wheels variations

      @JCsRiptrack  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin, are you referring to different ways to handle train wheelsets, or is this more something for say tank or tractor wheels?

    • @Kevin-ev7hw
      @Kevin-ev7hw 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JC I was asking different ways to paint wheel sets for Freight cars. I have watched a couple of videos but still have hesitation on painting the wheelsets.

    • @JCsRiptrack
      @JCsRiptrack  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kevin-ev7hw Understandable. I've seen, but don't have myself, a special wheel mask that covers up the wheel tread but leaves everything else exposed. I've hand-painted mine, but that can also be hit and miss. Are you looking at painting metal or plastic wheels?

    I thought the video was totally useless. It only shows the guy yacking and some experiments he tried. He actually doesn't show you how to use PanPastel.
    Skip it!
