Social safety tip! If a stranger ever asks where you’re headed don’t say “I’m gonna camp in my car here alone” say I’m headed to a friends house. You may find a good camp spot but you also might find yourself in danger. You’re lucky those people were good people and you weren’t followed or anything. Maybe I’m paranoid but I’d rather be paranoid than in danger and I hope no one else is ever in danger because of a simple friendly seeming question. Sometimes friendly conversation has alterior motives behind it. Please stay safe out there everyone

If there is anything I have learned by random solo traveling it is that you meet a lot of kind people who help you out and are concerned about you being alone (especially if you are a young woman and they are dad age). It's funny but you get a good sense about people's intentions and they are practically always good if you are the one who asks for help in my experience. I admire your attitude when everything goes wrong, you still try to go with the flow! I wish I was as badass as you, honestly. Also because your mouse is the most adorable creature in the world.

@@hannahleeduggan omg Hannah replied to me (ha)! I am honored. Seriously though, I love your van videos and I like how you show how to have fun and rely on kind people, which I think is hard for some people to understand (and they might see it as nerve wracking) unless they have experienced it themselves and have really developed that sense of people. I went on a solo trip to Egypt which is known for harassment (at women) and I went aware of this, and I ended up having such a good time in large part because of so many really sweet guys who were so worried I'd get harassed and have a terrible time, ha. There were creeps too, but they weren't an issue and I knew who was genuine.

@@ElizabethSollazzo-Daland Okay seriously? I think all of us who watch her channel, and have for a very long time, know exactly that Hannah is very responsible about her surroundings and able to work her way out of situations that are less than desirable. If everyone is so concerned and feels the need to chastised someone for choosing to live life how they deem fit, then shame on you. Hannah knows the risks as do we. I will continue to support her journeys no matter where they lead because at least she has the guts to do the stuff I could only dream of. Hannah has never been one to sugar coat and spoon feed us which is why she shared this in the first place because not everyone realizes how many things can go wrong on the road. Spread kindness instead of fear, the world needs it.

This video is such a great example of how kind random strangers can be when you're on the road! I had a similar situation where I was stuck in a sand pit of a forest road. I was buried super deep. It was 9 pm, and there were literally no tow companies for miles. I was at such a horrid angle that there's no way I could've slept comfortably. Then almost right away, the only car that had come down that road the entire time stopped and they helped me get out, taking like 20 minutes out of their day, even pulling me along until the road became less sandy. If it weren't for them, I would've had a horrible night. I am so grateful to people like that, and I am so happy for you that you were also helped when you needed it! Safe travels!

These are the kind of videos that I miss to be honest, because it was your ability to take situations and things that most people would find completely discardable and turn them into something fun and meaningful to the point where even random insanity became an adventure worth remembering.
There you were living in an old van that you yourself admitted looked "creepy," and which you payed hardly anything for, but somehow you managed to turn it into this adorable place with so much character and fun. Troubles on the road? Ruts? Things falling apart? All in another days adventure, and maybe someone else would end up unhappy and miserable, but you? No way! You were always determined to make it fun - no matter what!
And even with your original cottage - when you first got it, you were excited about the most simple things that anyone else would have overlooked or not even wanted - like having an outhouse! I mean, who gets excited about an outhouse? But you did, because you always managed to see things in this positive, interesting, appreciative light, and I loved that.
You did not need the "normal" things that others seem to need to be happy. You took the ordinary, or even the discardable, and made it extraordinary, interesting, creative and unique. I am glad that things are working out for you, and that you now have a home that you are happy with that has more of the normal conveniences of life. Just know that it is your ability to find happiness and adventure anywhere, even in situations and places that others never would, that I admire so much!

That's all basic maintenance any van, or car would have, Hannah. No worries. I'm replacing my lower and upper radiator hoses (like $23 each), and clamps now, since I'm overhauling my coolant system anyway - including replacing my Timing Chain. All while the cheap parts are off (rare) replacing them to save on towing later on. I'm also buying a replacement alternator now, because the one in there is 7 years old and will go 97 miles from civilization.
If you ever have that sweet antifreeze smell inside the van when the heat is on? While running the engine, you have a leaking 'Heater Core'. I had one for years and didn't know that was the main symptom - sweet smell inside the cabin. The Heater Core is a Miniature Radiator sitting inside the heater vent intake ducts. An input pipe - 3/4 or 5/8" pumps the already hot antifreeze, from the coolant ducts (coolant jackets) inside the engine, into and through this mini radiator (1/3 gallon size). A return hose of similar diameter sends it back out to the engine continuously while running. When you turn on the heater fan to warm the van cabin, it pulls cold outside air through this Heater Core, hot coolant heating it up, & sends the hot air into the cabin. That's how any car gets warm air inside after you heat the engine and coolant after startup. As these aluminum Cores age, they spring tiny leaks, sending sweet coolant smell into the cabin when the heater is on - Signaling they need replacement. But the smell is only in the cabin, not under the hood. Mine had a tiny leak for years, then BAM! Coolant fog burst out of my dash into the cabin. Panicked, I thought I was on fire. But realized it was coolant fog (poisonous). I caught it quick, pulled over and kept coolant from leaking under my passenger seat (which it does) to a minimum. No fog came from under the hood confirming it was the Heater Core, not the Radiator leaking hot vaporized 50/50 coolant. Then, (TH-cam DYI vids) I learned on the spot, how to do a Heater Core Bypass. You buy an adapter fitting the inside diameter of the Heater Core's Input/Output hoses (usually one 3/4", one 5/8") from O'Reilly or AutoZone. My hoses we're the same size so I bought a single $4, 5/8" adapter at Lowe's. Use the clamps already on the hoses. Loosen both. Pull them off the Core (may have to cut them - that's ok) put the adapter between and inside the ends of the Input and Output hose - looping the coolant through the now single hose - 'Bypassing' the Heater Core. And sending the coolant safely back to the engine. Now that the coolant isn't going through the Core it won't leak. But you won't have cabin heat until you slide a new core ($50 - 150) back into the vent ducts. A real pain in the ass job on a lot of these vans (a lot of AC Compressor lines and big plastic ducts to remove) - but still easier than carpentry TBO. I did my bypass in July. I have no cabin heat. But I don't care because I'm in SoCal.
    - Make sure you don't have a sweet coolant smell inside the van cabin when you use the heater. If so, doing a Core Bypass is a really cool , simple DYI for any vehicle. Then replace the Heater Core when you can. No worries ☺️.

Two guys stopped to help, and happened to work at the auto parts store that wasn’t too far down the road I guess. All I had was a 50 in my wallet so I gave it to them and they went and bought me parts, returned my change and even put the parts on on my car. It ended up breaking down again but I’ll always remember the kind act.

Great job handling all these tests. That last test-trusting two men in the dark insisting you come with them would have freaked me out, but you were there so I can't really judge it. I preface this with I have never driven a car-only ride my bicycle everywhere (day or midnight and I'm now 57years old} so I am all for women taking their own risks as they see fit.I had a taxi driver that insisted I get into the front seat. Then he got on the freeway heading into the desert when I was only going a couple miles across town the other way. When I asked him where he was going he told me he was taking me out the the desert and looked over at me to see my reaction. He laughed and turned into a luxury casino exit. He drove through the valet entrance.. he thought he was so clever. Meanwhile I was thinking of jumping out of the car (this is just before cellphones were popular). He then got me to my destination. Only reason taking a taxi was that I was sick with a cold and I needed to show up at the place to turn in my passport photo (that I just got taken) and I was tired and needed to get to the First time passport, so straight from the photo place, I took a taxi cause I was sick..... I was too naive back then-after all he was joking, right? I should of reported him, but it made me aware of how fast a situation change when the power is in a strangers hands. There is no one answer, though. I am just glad you are safe and I had some helpful angels.

Lol everyone worried about Hannah’s safety with strangers. Y’all worried when she’s alone and when she’s not alone, she can’t win with ya til she’s got a man with her (who statistically would be a higher risk to her than any stranger!) 🤣 Love to you and stay safe - which you are clearly very good at doing.

The number of people who are giving her this advice (as though she's not an adult woman who's probably very familiar with the concept of stranger danger, like lol how infantalising) and following it up with something about the true crime content they consume... maybe they need to lay off them for a bit if that's the level of paranoia they have in them. They didn't have any kind of suspicious vibe, they didn't ask her to get out of the van, there weren't any big red flags... also i'd love to know what they were proposing that she do when her van was stuck in the mud and these people pulled over to help out lol.
It'd definitely be nerve-wracking to be her in this situation, but like... people have gotta stop acting like this is minecraft where all the creepers spawn at night around you lmaooo

I literally rolled to a stop in front of an Autozone at 1:00 am in the morning..when it opened the next morning I bought a 35 dollar new alternator and found a mechanic to put it in …in the parking lot..and i was off to Florida year was 1998 😝

When building my no build build van, I was lucky enough to find my old Garmin. Satellite GPS and it still works perfectly! Definitely need to update the software ($99) but it’s a champ and I haven’t used it in at least a decade. Still gets me where I want to go and I don’t have to depend on cell service. Check the thrift stores and pawn shops, could be well worth a small investment.

Luckily the alternator problem didn't happen in a remote area. Youve been faced with so many challenges but as usual have met them with aplomb and have had helpful people assist you. The things that are out of our control, like car mechanics, are the scariest things. In spite of all the stressful situations you've been in, you have remained optimistic and trustful and are a good model of how to cope when faced with life's slings and arrows.

I enjoy your videos so much Hannah and I've loved watching how much care and thought you've put into your home designs and how much effort you've put into the details. As a mechanic, and someone who had spent a lifetime around vehicles, I would like to encourage you to invest in a vehicle which is more suited for your lifestyle and traveling habits. I know it's a bit of an investment, but a 4x4 van, with a winch, something newer with low miles and standing room... I just bought an 07 E350 Van. I had to put $7000 in it, new transmission, etc, but with how much vans are going for now, it's a good investment. For you, something even newer might be appropriate. So, something with low miles, and 4 wheel drive would have prevented every single problem you had in this video. I love your can-do attitude and I love how you're so independent, I just think a little better preparedness and investing in yourself with a more appropriate vehicle might be leaning toward the safe side for you, and definitely the less frustrating side.

Very few shops would test the alternator (without specifically being asked) nor would they likely be able to detect a hose leaking coolant without obvious signs of it. To me, these were just things that can happen while on the road. How she handles it is a perfect example of staying calm, thinking critically, and being willing to roll with anything that happens.

I definitely believe that it was fate that each time your van broke down you were on or near a highway/help as opposed to when you and Walt were out in the secluded hilly mountain drives. You have someone looking over you for sure! I commend you for the positive attitude in the face of adversity, that's building character every time something goes a little sideways. I've been in your position when I was solo backpacking and random men helped me out late at night, you just have to listen to your gut and trust yourself like you did here!

I can so relate to feeling unsettled with car issues. The last time I was driving in Las Vegas, the cab of my vehicle filled with acrid smoke and fumes, due to the blower motor burning up… scary stuff! It’s fixed now, thanks to the new Mobile Tech at Findlay Lincoln (they’re not paying me, I’m simply a happy customer), who came to my home about an hour from Las Vegas to fix it for us. It’s GREAT to have unexpected great service. Thank you for cleaning up that campsite! At least you’ve already had some challenges on this road trip, so the rest will hopefully be flowing smoothly for you. 😊 If you get tired of New Mexico, Southern Nevada is pretty (and warm, usually. Pahrump is about an hour outside of Las Vegas, and there are many mountain roads to travel and find a place to camp with beautiful views of the mountains, very low light pollution, and not a lot of humans. Have a safe journey, wherever you decide to travel to. 😊

I had two alternators die on the road in my Vanlife Van over the years. Yeah you have the money to get it ordered/fixed while tired from driving, and that's totally cool. But, if you had to, you can touch the +/- wires of a $15 Walmart Multimeter to the back of the alternator (under doghouse) and see what the voltage is with the van running. If it's under 13 volts - it's bad. Should be 13.3 -14.5 Volts (a bit higher than 12 volts) so it flows 'downhill' to 12 volt battery to recharge it. The battery wasn't recharging (uphill from fried alternator) so the gauges went out as the battery died. They usually go slow enough to notice power windows slowly dying. You don't have them, so gauges gave you the warning - but give less time to get to an O'Reilly, AutoZone or NAPA Auto Parts store before your battery dies (needing a jump).
Most cheaper alternators at the Auto Parts stores are refurbished/rebuilt (perfectly fine for years of use) around $100 - 150. Or less. There's a big bracket bolted to the top - front of van engines which holds the alternator & AC Compressor securely on, and lined up with the drive belt to spin their pulleys (I just removed that bracket & alt & AC Compressor to replace my Timing Chain, Waterpump & Thermostat). Just two bolts (one with two heads turning opposite) hold the alternator on this bracket. And one + & one - wire you unscrew with a Phillips Head - on the back of the alternator (where you test voltage with multimeter). Then loosen both bolts holding the Alternator on the bracket, & unscrew/remove those back wires (after loosening tensioner pulley to get drivebelt off, and removing negative bat cable from battery) and you can put the new Alternator back in yourself - reverse order - no problem. Far easier than doing carpentry. But yeah! Your tired, got the money, and we all know you can fix it.
    - But here's the directions in comments above when the next one dies years from now 😊. It will. But more likely near a high Mtn pass as old ones tend to fry stressing at high elevations. Not trying to man - splain here, as Hannah could school my ass on carpentry for years.
